I thought maybe you were having a fit!! Maybe a parrot in the room with you? Maybe you can take off the leaves that look black, so the energy can flow better. Wow, that is really warm Cecil. Are the new buds comming out black too?

No not having fits, and we don't have a parrot here.
I did what you suggested and removed all the leafs that had black on then (about 5 or so)
The buds are not black, but the plant is not doing any growing.
I hope I manage not to kill it

Cecil,
you know i only grow in pots (for now) but when watering try not to get any splash on the leaves as that also will burn them in hot weather especially yours.
Hope it come along for you well, hey by the way if you do not mind send some of that Texas heat our way but dont forget the rain afterwards.

As far as sending rain......it is dry as all get outs around here.
I did get water on the leafs but it was real early in the morning.

Don't dispair. My B. Marseilles VS, started this year, is a little smaller than yours. It just started growing again! It had stopped growing and the leaves, though green seemed to be getting like leather. One old leaf has rust, but not bad. My climate has been the opposite of yours. Nothing but rain every single day of June and cool. The fact that it has lived through the monsoon and putting out new shoots is encourging, so don't lose hope.

I dont think the problem is underwatering or water on the leaves. You might have a fungus problem. If the tree was under watered you would see leaf wilt from the outside inside, you might also have a fungus type problem. The leaves to not looked burned, but like Peg mentioned, they will do fine in the heat, with nice leathery leaves. Fig trees love the heat with proper heat and you should get some of the best sugary sweet figs in the heat!

To cut back on the amount watering I would create a nice saucer and use a straw bed followed with 2-3 inches of bark nuggets in a saucer and that would keep the roots cool and keep the tree from cycling to dry/wet conditions.

I've got several trees (20) in a hot sandy hillside here that are having a difficult time with our heat and dry weather already. I put a sprinkler on them today for about five hours so maybe all the figs won't drop off. This is their second summer here and I didn't think I would have to water but they just aren't well established enough to handle it yet.
I can't really tell from your picture but I can't see any type of mulch around the tree. Seems to me that pinestraw three or four inches thick around the tree to cover the root zone at least helps to keep the ground cooler and hold moisture a bit. Helps to keep grass and weeds back too. Good luck.

Hi Cecil,

If the tree didn't establish itself into the native soil before the heat set in, you need to water the tree more often. The earth acts as a huge wick pulling water out of the root ball the tree originally grew in. Typically, if the tree is lacking in moisture, the leaves will wilt and not bounce back so quickly after the heat of the day has passed.

I think what showed on your leaves is too much exposure to an intense sun. Like it is sunburned, not necessarily dehydrated.

Also, as the soil temps go up, the roots become less efficient. I typically cut back (not eliminate) on feeding during the hotter part of summer.
