This month's issue of Fine gardening magazine has a big spread on coneflowers. It caught my eye in the grocery store. When is the best time to order coneflower plants? If I planted them in the Fall, will they bloom the next spring? Bare roots or a bulb or a small plant?

I plant and transplant most hardy perennials in the fall and I'm in zone 7b. The roots establish well over the winter. Just remember to water them in the fall if you don't get rain.

As for if they'll bloom -- it will depend upon the size of the plant and the variety of coneflower. Try to get at least a 4" potted plant.

You can grow 'Prairie Splendor' from seeds. It flowers quickly, even on young plants. Sow seeds in fall in your zone.

I didn't know you could still order plants now. I thought now would be more of fall bulbs and unusuals like alliums and irises.

Can you not check your local garden centres to see if they carry these coneflowers? They might be cheaper at the end of the season.

Well - I have 20 shrubs and a plum tree in containers - the oldest ones being containered for 11 years, along with dozens of perennials including woody vines like clematis (1), wisteria (1), honeysuckles (2). I am definitely one who doesn't have a problem with trees & shrubs, etc., in containers and have had to constantly battle people here on GW about the alleged impossibility of doing such. ;-). But I guess I do have a problem with trying to maintain perennials WITH the shrubs over a long haul, which this contest seems to be suggesting (or perhaps this contest doesn't care about long term). Ie., it almost suggests putting together an annual-like "combination planting", but using trees/shrubs, perennials, etc., as the combining plants. I have some crocuses in my plum container and as earlier noted, had some sedum crawling along the top of my clematis container, but I do know that there will come a time when you would need to divide a perennial. I have seen half-barrels with cannas in the center with daylilies planted around the edge. But it might be tricky to try to also jam some grasses or sedges and annuals in with that and a canna isn't even a shrub. LOL But then I guess that is why it is called a "challenge". ;-)

Hi, Do you by any chance still have any of your fine gardening issues available. I have a few from 2001 & 02. Such a great magazine. I have almost 2+ full years (missing 3 issues) of Garden Design from Feb/Mar 2004 to Jan 2007 for trade or in exchange for postage.

hi ellen, it was the day before mine. if you go to the FGPD and look below the photo, there is an option to go to previous days( back to the beginning...!)it's a great feature because you can go back to things you might have missed etc. so glad you liked the mirrors! best, mindy
