Well I've heard that it's a good variety. So I got it, it did bear until it was about 6 ft tall. stopped bearing for 2 years, and I gave up on it. So it's not productive when it reaches a certain height. My guess is you'll need to prune it heavily for it to bear again. Hence the name Petite.
Could actually be one of several different varieties, as well: Violette de Bordeaux, Negronne, etc. There seem to be varying reports on its growth and fruiting that are not consistent. Mine was a slow grower, had few fruit and died after about 6 years. Didn't get replaced.
Mine does well. It grew slowly. It's quite productive. The figs are red inside, black outside with a tender skin. Photo in the link below - all are PN except the brown one which was brown turkey. It gets a few brebas, mostly main crop that in this area (maritime NorthWest) is in late september/early october.
I dont know how it will be this year, since the current "Juneuary" weather has everything growing slowly.
I prune it quite a bit but I do that with all of my fruit trees to keep them small.
I have two Petite Negri that I grew from cuttings last year. I kept them in pots under the house this past winter. I planted one in the yard this spring and kept one in it's pot. The one in the yard produced a couple of Breba that I may have picked too soon. They were not very flaverable or sweet. Both planted and potted Petite Negri are just now starting to put on a second crop.
I have been wondering how cold hardy the Petite Negri is? I live in zone 7B and wonder if it will make it through the winter without some protection.
It is Hardy:I am talking about the one from Parks seeds. It was not very productive for me eather, but had a handfull of large black fig, very tasty,in the forth year when i gave it(sold ) to one of the fig collectors. It could be that it is a very good fig in other warmer climates. Tell you the true, whenever a fig perform satisfactory in my zone 6,it could be a very good fig in zone 7 and higher. But personally I am looking to keep figs that perform excellent in zone 6 and colder. Best Regards
I have a Petite Negri fig. I had in a large container and left it outside unprotected this past winter. It came back just fine (though it was a mild winter here in Metro NYC/NJ), still it saw a minimum of 11 F. in a pot. I have since put it in the ground and so far it is showing more stress from HEAT than cold. My Brown Turkeys seem to be faster growing and more vigorous plants but the Negri has the advantage of being really dwarf (for those places in the garden that lack space). It might pick up, I only transplanted it about a month ago. I do recall that the zone listed on the label for the Negri was a zone higher than the Brown Turkey (but sometimes those labels are just plain wrong). Good luck!
I bought 2 plants from Parks 2 years ago. I put them in pots, took them into the garage the first winter, and left them unprotected outside the 2nd winter. This summer one of them finally gave fruit, but only 2 figs. BUT, gee they were delicious! I'm in z 8a SC. I'm not sure what protection I'll give them this coming winter.
SoJay, Herman says they are hardy. Anything he says I take as gospel. I am in zone 7B and mine is in the grown. I also have one in a pot. You might try what I am doing keep one in a pot and put one in the grown. If the grown one lives through the winter unprotected plant the potted one.
