Well,

The time has come to post my fig collection.

I've talked about it and now I'm doing it and I hope everyone will be impressed. I am very excited to share this list with everyone.

That is all and I hope I didn't miss anything.

Most of the 1gl. are from cuttings I got earlier this year. I rate my rooting success to about 60% and that is not bad considering I'm hardly home to take care of them myself all the time.

Anything that failed this season I will try again next season. Will not give up.

Nelson, yes Very Very gradually or they wilt and die quickly being so tender. What i do is put them in morning sun when it rises for an hour or so and watch there reaction actually as im retired,if they are not wilting i leave a little longer then back into shade. I do this for maybe a week then slowly i increase the time for morning sun as time goes by and i keep an eye on them so they do not droop the leaves which is not good. In time they will be happy with full sun. This is critical time for them, no to much water and be very careful with hot sun, afternoon sun is most damaging for them at this point no afternoon high hot sun. Evening sun is also good when trying to get them used to it if you are early worker as its not good to just leave them and come home from work they will be dead or surely on there way.

If _I_ had those trees, I would wait till they went dormant in the fall. Then prune them back hard to save on shipping costs. And at the same time get tons of cuttings to give/swap/barter, etc. But that is just me. I'm all for recouping some of my investment, but more importantly propagating some of these rare varieties to ensure survival and availability for future generations. My take on the subject is that we never know when the "Fig World" will be hit with a bug/blight/virus/etc. that wipes out millions of trees, and hopefully it will be some odd genetic mutant in someone's backyard that is the one variety that is immune and saves the world from a fig famine. And it is not beyond the realm of possibility either. Just look at what happened during The Great French Wine Blight was a severe blight of the mid-19th century that destroyed many of the vineyards in France and laid to waste the wine industry by one little Phylloxera aphid . The ONLY thing that saved the European Grape Industry was the discovery that the European vines could be grafted to the American rootstock that were not susceptible to the Phylloxera. So while we are all busy chasing that elusive rare fig and horse-trading with each other we are also building up a gene pool to fall back on in case something bad happens. Something to consider.

Bamboo, I put it in one of the biggest pots that I could find at Lukas, but the problem was that it didn't have a flat bottom and was not draining properly. When I took it out the roots were all the way in the soil, that is why I am saying even a dwarf fig tree needs room to grow and a pot it is not the best environment. When I got the tree it was probably in a gallon but the Negronne which was smaller in size grew so fast! it did look like a strong variety. They said that the best time to take cuttings are in the fall, I will keep a cutting for you and I am going to grow at least one more for myself being small size I can find a space some place. When there is a will, there is a way.:) Your VDB looks very healthy and soon you will be tasting some good figs. Here is the guilty pot where I had the fig Silvia

Looks like you really like vdb. Well whats not to like. Also you have preta? Do you mean the Portuguese fig preto?

Black Mission should be in Container in your climate.
It is a super tasty fig,but not very cold hardy!

I must agree with you on the Mission should be in a pot in my climate. I was doing one of those thinking from the rear type of things when I planted it in the ground.

Yes I do like the VDB. As a matter of fact I recently got some cuttings from a very well known fig friend. Just to try his VDB strain.

On the question for the Preta.
I got the cuttings from another member as Preto. I labeled it as Preta as per Adrianos website.
That's my mistake, I should have asked the source first to make sure which is which.

The problem is Adriano and the source are both Portuguese.
Now who is right and who is wrong?

Wow! You must be a fig lover!

Rafed it's been more than two years since you started this thread. I'm sure I'm not alone in wanting an update on which ones you liked and and kept and which ones you got rid of.

Hello my good friend from Michigan.

Where do you grow all of these fig trees Rafed. You have a very nice collection. Did you purchase more property.

Phil from Northern cold Ohio. 72 degrees tomorrow finally. I have to net my fig trees because the squirrels are chewing and pulling the branches off.
