Best Waterproof Hybridizing Tags?????

Hi all - its raining over here too, and I need your opinions on how to waterproof my seed pod tags? I've been using paper price tags & covering them with 2 strips of clear scotch tape, anybody have better ideas here??

Mine are paper, too and I've never had any trouble with them getting wet. They curl just a bit, but that's ok. I write on them with pencil. Do yours fall apart when they get wet?

Hi Kathy - yes! It rained all morning, and even though I had scotch tape over the writing, the top part attached to the string is disintegrating fast - I'm just going out to re-tag them all! I'd love suggestions on how the mid-west is tagging theirs considering they've had rain the last couple weeks.........

arthurm queries, "Just wondering if anyone is changing all their plant tags or are they doing their best to ignore said changes." arthur, I maintain tags from the supplier, even when I suspect (know) that they are incorrect. I make comments and changes in the written records with footnotes. Tags are original data--and I don't fudge data. Thirty years from now, they may have some meaning that we can't decipher, yet. I'm also an obstinate sort. I will continue to refer to my Laelia purpurata in casual conversation without change. If I choose to write something for a published journal, I will follow the conventional rules--my plant becomes Sophronitis purpurata. If I choose to speak at a formal event (orchid society meeting), I will refer to it as accepted under the aegis of The Royal Horticultural Society. --Stitz--

When buying a complex hybrid, buy the flower or buy several.

2 flowers per stem. No reason to suspect that both have the same tag except that some one named them. With the full name (#1 for the first one 'Purple' for the second one) it becomes easy to know what you are getting as the full name will only transfer to a division or a clone. The point is that if you are shopping for complex hybrids in Masdies or Paphs 2 good examples, the names alone are almost meaningless as you have no idea what you are getting. Ideally shop the flowers if you have that opportunity or get several small seedlings. Keep the one you like the most and sell the others. Nick

Hi! Apologies for the delay on seeing this post... The photos originally posted plantomaniac08(8) but the photo showing further down is the 'White Stripe' spathiphyllum we used to grow. Sadly, it didn't perform well for us, so we're no longer growing that one. Regarding tags and accuracy: I totally hear you --- our tagging isn't the most accurate in the world. We typically don't go variety-specific on our tags because it makes things MUCH more expensive for us... and we have to keep our costs within the threshold of what our retailer partners are willing to buy our plants for (while still being able to afford to invest in research and development to find and test new plants...). Another problem is that we're human --- everyone makes mistakes and with the volume of plants we produce, it happens from time to time that the wrong tag gets put in the wrong plant. We are always working on making things better, though, and we're testing some different systems that can help us be more specific on tags without becoming crazy expensive. But if you have any questions about our plants, please don't hesitate to reach out to me. Oh, and by the way: I'm working to get every plant we sell photographed and put up on the website with the variety name, but it's a slow process... ---Justin, Costa Farms

Rather than use a stake with a tag attached, I ended up using black plastic "gutter guard" screening. I make a circle around the base of the rose using UV cable ties to close the loop. I then attach the label to the cutter guard. The picture below may help make it clear. https://picasaweb.google.com/HAKuska/HenrySRoses#slideshow/5070748980103566482 I feel that this worked better than a stake as I had the same problem that seil had: "My problem with tags that stick in the soil and not tied to the rose is that they seem to disappear on me." You an get the plastic hybridizing (bread type) tags from EarthStar or Gary Schaben. Write on them with a #2 lead pencil. Clean with bleach if you want to re-use. Waterproof.

I have had good luck with the bread type tags too ED. Out of the ones that i got i have only had about 5 brake. This is good for 3 years with the same ones. David

I've only been hybridizing a few years, but I have found the colored pipeliners (from craft stores) to work very well.

I pollinate a flower....twist a pipecleaner around the bud where the pod will form, and document the cross in an address book alphabetically by the pod parent name.

Eventually I go through the address book and make an excel spreadsheet.

I get mine from the tire store where they do oil changes, etc. The white tags they use on your keys are perfect. They order them for me a thousand at a time and they can be re used if you clean them. #2 lead pencil or a paint marker in the craft dept at Wal Marts is what I use!...Ellie
