Well, I'm glad you're philosophical - it happens to all of us and sometimes it's nothing we can trace, or change. It may have been better to do the job in November, when the tree would be dormant (it's more important for conifers) and the wind where you live probably wouldn't matter normally, but in this situation, unless you misted a LOT from immediately after the repot (small conifers need it then, if not otherwise) it probably didn't help much either. The fert. probably didn't hurt, though having pinched on Apr. 30th may not have been the best thing when followed up by the repot so soon after. If you were concerned about the roots, good misting would also have added water to the shallow roots, while sparing the deeper ones that might not have needed it as much, though if you are now using a mostly gritty mix, and it's windy (sapping moisture in general), maybe waiting the week was too long a wait (if normally ok). You notice I'm qualifying everything here, because it's hard to pinpoint any one thing that made 'the' difference, but as you say it's a learning experience, and there is no lack of junipers out there!

I find a fortnight ahead of planting out is plenty. Plus four to five days for hardening off. So roughly 3 weeks altogether from sowing to transplanting outside. I grow in small pinches in modules and do not pot on. No heat and no lights. (I grow them in a glass porch). Lettuce tolerates pulling apart of several seedlings from a clump. I don't mind if some get a better start than others because I don't want them all ready at once anyway.

The worst problem I usually have is that Ill occasionally type a reply directly on the GW formwhich, as usual, gets longer than I plannedand then when I click preview I get a screen/message that says USER IDENTIFICATION FAILED! And if I click "back," when I get back to the message screen, what Ive typed is GONE WITH THE WIND! Then I have to try to remember what I said and start from scratchwhich makes me really, REALLY mad! When I compose directly on the GW screen I try to remember to copy it (and store it "in the mouse") just in case something goes wrong, but just last week it messed up again and I had forgotten to copy itand I was MAD! So right now I wont compose even short messages directly on the GW screen! I think the various problems are just because GW is such an obsolete site! Ive never heard of growing them from seed, but its gotta take longer than the growing season we have around here. In the next week or so Im gonna plant some of the growing ones I have right now in a corner of my compost pile. I dont have room for them in the "real" garden either! (And the compost pile is where theyve been coming up for the last couple years when I didnt even know what I had growing there!) If you started your plants in 2" pots, thats big enough for most of them to get a good start. In a tray with "small" cells, the cells are only about 3/8" square. If you do decide to go to something bigger for some of the things (like 5 gallon pots for the squash and the melons! ;-) ), just go up one size at a time. If theres too much soil in the pot without roots in it, its too easy to overwater and kill thingsand youve put too much work into them to do that. And wait to pot them up a size until you can see roots growing all the way out to the pots. That, again, will make it less likely that youll accidentally overwater them. On any of your winter sown things that are hardy perennials, you can now leave them uncovered unless its getting down to freezingwhich it doesnt most nites anymore. You could probably leave them uncovered even when it is below freezing, but I dont wanna be responsible for you losing your plants, so Im not gonna tell you to do that! First off, I think you must ask dealer what upgrades you need to make to your attic where dealer will guarantee against freeze ups. That's if you are serious about placing a high eff condensing furnace in attic. Then get pricing from an insulation contractor and/or dealer if he provides that type of work. Weigh the cost of the upgrade and decide if it's worth it. I think quote #1 is ridiculously high. Good comprehensive list though for scope of work. Compare to the other quotes for apples to apples. On quote #2, I want R8 insulation up and down. I don't believe you require a 90 KBTU furnace for upstairs area. I would want to see the load calc to support that size. Drop down to 70 K model. I assume Infinity controllers for both systems. How many returns on each floor? I would want two returns on each floor, properly sized and strategically located. Filter cabinets on both systems? I think a 3 ton condenser for upstairs is oversized and would suggest going down to a 2 1/2 ton Sgl stage high eff model. Don't like that condenser on the Trane quote. I would like to see evap coil model numbers. What about filter cabinets? What model thermostats? Is this rental property?
