most disease resistant tomato?

I really want to get a full crop of tomatos this year. Every year something gets them...either bugs or disease of various sorts. Nematodes, wilt of some sort, etc. I dislike using chemical pesticides, but may resort to it this year. Still, what is the MOST hardy, disease resistant, will live despite whatever I do, type of tomato.

Julia Child has been great for me, own root better than grafted one. I also grow The poets wife, and life of the party which opens yellow then turns pink. Both have been very clean with very little BS. Vanessa Bell black spotted horribly in a pot last year but so far planted in the ground its been good this year but it's still early. Roald Dahl is clean as well so far. Autumn sunset is currently recovering after being cut back and grown in a pot all last season do to the move but is also very disease resistant. New this year are solero vigorosa and karl ploberger so time will tell.

Disease resistant Tomatoes??

I'm looking for disease resistant OP tomatoes I have a terrible time with anthranose, early blight and late blight. Do any of you have any suggestions. **** First, there is no such thing as resistance when it comes to tomatoes, it's tolerance, which is not the same as resistance. (smile) Early Blight is due to A. solani and Late Blight is due to P. infestans. If you have P. infestans then there are no OP's I can think of that give resistance, let alone tolerance, and that includes the variety Legend, which was bred for Late Blight tolerance but it hasn't turned out that way when grown by most folks. And Late Blight is usually lethal within a couple of weeks leaving a stinling mess of black rotten tissue. Early Blight and Late Blight can both appear either early or late in the season/ And anthracnose is never a problem for me until late in the season when the nights start turning cooler and I don't know of any OP's that are tolerant to anthracnose. Anthracnose is a very common fungus that's airborne almost everywhere. So what can one do about the major FUNGAL tomato diseases, which are the foliage diseases, such as Early Blight and Septoria Leaf Spot? There are a couple of Early Blight tolerant varieties out there but they aren't very tolerant and without checking I think both are hybrids. it just means that a large commercial farmer can spray maybe every 6-7 days rather than every 4-5 days which is a huge savings for the commercial farmer. One can use an excellent anti-fungal spray which works best as a preventative rather than a cure. Yes, I could name one, but will wait to see what others have to say as well. The bacterial foliage pathogens Bacterial Speck and Bacterial Spot have no good treatments, at least for the home gardener. Carolyn

What is the hardiest tomato that you have grown?

I dont know the name of the tomato but it still is magical. I found a volunteer tomato plant that grew in my yard, around where I seeded tomato seeds into pots. it could be a spillover and went into soil directly and on its own it germinated. what is facinating is that its still about 12" tall after 3 months, did not grow too well, was not watered properly, never fertilized, has roots exposed, and was replanted into area that was not rich in nutrients or tilled. for some reason this keeps putting up tomatoes with no blossom drop while all other plants I took good care got hit with blosson drop. I will post pictures of this tomato once ripe and would definitely save its seed for its hardiness.

I am not sure. Some varieties genetically produce more fruit than others and some are more resistant to certain diseases. I don't think there is a bullet proof tomato that is resistant to all the diseases. I had good luck last season, but not the season before. The best tip is grow them in large pots with a fast draining mix. I grew mine this year on my concrete driveway and they liked it. I think because there wasn't a lot of plant life around to harbor disease. Also an earlier variety would probably be easier because there is less time for something to go wrong.

Look for many letters after the name.
Example: V, N, F etc.
These stand for Virus resistant, fungal resistant, nematode resistant,etc.
Note the word resistant and not bullet proof.
Check Tomato Growers Supply for Florida friendly tomato seeds.
The link below from UF is a great piece that includes an
overview of recommended varieties,
soil prep, insects and diseases and a planting guide.
It's worth printing and keeping for future reference.

If you find a tomato with 'S','L','H' after the name (stink bug), (lubber), (horn worm) resistant.
Please let me know! or am I asking too much to hope for?

& Yes! to the long list of letters after the name - as in "VFFNTA" or more. Unfortunately, those kinds of tomatoes are not always the tastiest, though they're often still better than store-bought.

I'm Zone 10A so I'm not sure how you'll do with this one but Beefmaster has been my workhorse for many years, hands down. Publix sells this one tagged with the moniker "Florida Ugly", not sure where that name came from since you can't buy seeds under that name but they have great disease resistance, production and taste. Try a few and you'll understand why although they're not pretty round tomatoes you'll not find a better home-grown tomato here in Florida....

Question for tomncath:

When you buy them from Publix, are they seedlings or do you just buy a tomato from their shelf and save the seeds? Thanks.

I need to get planting again since my Cherokee Purples are fading fast and I would like to get a new crop going.

My first and only experience with Cherokee Purple is mixed. I got a nice large crop but the plants declined to something. Not sure what did them in. The tomatoes are incredibly good though. I will be eating them like apples for a short time and miss them when they are gone.

I live in Apopka also. The only advice I feel qualified to offer is, DO NOT TRY TO GROW TOMATOES IN THIS AREA IN THE GROUND. Nematodes will wipe them out. According to the advice of many successful and friendly people on this site, the solution seems to be to grow them in containers using Al's mix. That's what I'm going with this year.

I liked Cherokee Purple. It was pretty productive for an heirloom. I am not growing it now because my space is limited and I like to try and grow new stuff.
