Anyone have Trouble with Squirrels

For the past three years that I've had fig trees, the squirrels have left my figs alone and concentrated on eating ALL of my apples and strawberries. But, I'm becoming concerned that they might learn that figs are also good to eat.

Does anyone have experience with figs and squirrels? Do they like them and eat them? I'd appreciate suggestions on how to deal with them.

It seems like a losing battle. I don't have cats or dogs, so don't even suggest that. I've read about hanging pie tins etc., but I've also read that squirrels become accustomed to these.

I'm also considering fox urine and also hot pepper spray for the fruits. I've never seen an animal scratch it's eyes out because they got pepper in them, but I have seen a lot of people warn of this happening. I'm not sure if it's real or imagined. Frankly, I'm on the verge of not really caring about poor little squirrel's nose and eyes, but I might be convinced otherwise.

Suggestions appreciated.

I have bunches of squirrels, they even tease my cat, they sneak up on her while she is asleep! They have never touched my figs. But I have a lot of hickory and oak trees that probably keep them satisfied. A friend of mine has a lot of problems with them eating his tomatoes but not his figs.

Squirrels,love figs here in NJ.
Of course they ate Peaches to when I had peaces.
I have nets on the figs that I want for myself,and no nets on the trees I let them eat the fruits.

[/quote] I tain't got no problem with 'em eating, just as long as it's not in MY garden!!!! :D I'm going to give that Shake Away a shot. We'll see if powdered fox urine is worth a hoot. Shot?, thats reminds me, theres one bushy tailed tree rodent that's thanking his lucky stars that the sights on my ole wind-broke .22 are off a tad.....

There have been several colonies in Cambridgeshire (UK) for the past decade - they outnumber greys in some areas...and they are on the increase since the gene for the blacl colouration is more dominant than grey...so we will be seeing the same changes as when our native reds were out-competed by the American greys...only at a slightly slower rate...although there is evidence which shows that grey females prefer black males as mates.

I just bought the same machine last week 11-29-23. 15 years later the Zo Supreme haven't corrected the problems that you experience back then. I'm disappointed as well! Top crust very light, sides and bottom very dark and crust is extremely like a brick. My old machines produced much better loafs of bread and way less cheaper. This machine is excellent for making dough but not for making bread in the machine. I thought I was buying a machine to do both actions great. NOPE! Perhaps the Virtuoso Plus is better? I would not recommend the supreme model!

. Woodpeckers peck for three reasons: To build a home, to attract a mate, and to eat. At this time of year it is not likely they are building a new place; it is a bit late for a brood. They are also not likely trying to attract a mate for the same reason. I will suggest then that perhaps there is something under your siding that is attracting them . . .. some kind of bug etc. Cure that problem and they will go away, at least until another mating season. The squirrels are likely just being opportunists; suggest you get them elsewhere as they can cause ALL kinds of havoc; especially the smaller, red ones if you have them. Try the ammonia; the mothballs are nasty stuff for ALL living things . . . . and if it does work; you'll be living with the smell lots longer than they will .. . I've also heard of pepper spray to repel them . . .. Good luck . . .. Bob

Between the squirrels and the birds, I can lose a lot of figs here in Virgina, even with cats hanging out around the tree. I often individually wrap figs with pieces of newspaper, and this definatly gives me more figs. It's time consuming, but I love my figs, so I do what I gotta do.

I hear squirrel is tasty, but I'm not sure if I could kill and clean them.
