Fruit development varies from tree to tree... even in the same geography/environmental conditions.

In Houston, I currently have trees with figs (main crop) ranging from quarter-sized down to B.B. sized. There are still many which don't have fruit at all. I have a few trees with a wide size range of brebas... from almost ripe (LSU G) to small nubs. One of the trees (I think it is George's #8) which started growing a breba fig after the main crop started forming.

One more thing I think I've noticed, but didn't keep notes to know for sure... For containerized trees, timing of root work might effect the timing of fruit production. If anyone has knowledge/experience with this, please share. If so, staggering root work may allow one to extend the harvest period... at least in the current growing season.

James, I root prune on of my Port trees and it still hasnt broken dormancy. Yes, I agree, root work makes a huge difference!

I didn't root prune mine. I'd say they have 6 to 8 inches of growth, 2 segments per extension. I don't see any miniature figs yet, but since it did form brebas last year I don't see why it wouldn't fruit this time around. I'll cross my fingers. Starting off I didn't realize how hard it would be to maintain a continer tree. Vendors always make things seem easier than they are, heh. I'm about to ditch my persimmon. It hasn't flowered yet and it's already got a foot of growth. I'm guessing my light levels are too low to incur flowering. Might the same issue arise in figs? I'd say it has about 5 to 6 hours of sun right now, but that will increse to 8 as summer arrives.

To be clear ... if you are looking for brebas they will be on last year's growth, not new growth. Depending on the variety, brebas usually race the first leaves for the first show of growth in the spring. If you have 6-8" of new growth & no brebas, I think you missed them this year (or your variety does not do brebas ... which is very common.) As for main crop figs, they will begin to appear at the crotch of the leaves & branches on the new growth. If your tree is mature enoungh to produce figs & considering you are @ Z6b, you should be seeing a small dimple at this point now ... in a few weeks this will start showing little figs.

Wild Forager - Both my latterula have not shown any brebas yet, about 6 ft. tall. I had lots of fruits from them last yr. All my other larger fig trees have brebas. And my FUYU persimmon don't flower until sometime in June. Right now the persimmon is leafing very well & I know I will have a bountiful harvest as it had at least the last 8 years. My persimmon tree is so laden with fruits so much so that I have to remove all leaves in late Oct as the rains will weigh down & break the branches. So if yr persimmon is a Fuyu, its a keeper. It took about 2 yrs before it bore any fruits. Its about 14 yrs since I had it.

Sorry for the mix-up. I was only sort of speaking about brebas, but then I switched to new figs. All of my brebas fell off. I still don't see any indication of figs on new growth though. Hopefully they'll show soon.

As for my perismmon, it's a Tanenashi, which I think is an early variety.
