Should figs trees have sprouted or are they dead?

My mom who lives in zone 6 PA planted 3 fig trees last year She put a brown and black fig in large containers and put a Chicago hardy fig in the ground. The container figs were stored in her unheated garage and the pots froze solid. So far no life with any of them and the wood all seems brittle and looks blackish mildewy. Should they have sprouted by now or are they dead?

is you have BLACK mold then it is too late..black mold is usally on the inside of the fig all well. but if you want try to cutting off the infected part. the roots may be safe.

I have some variety of local figs that apparently is not Brown Turkey like I thought because known BT did not have any trouble with the 9 degree night we had this Winter. Anyhow these particular figs appeared to have have lost about 50% of their limbs.
It looks like the older wood was hit the hardest.
I was about to cut out what I thought was dead and most of the dead looking wood now has very tiny green buds.
For some reason the old wood on these figs is just very late waking up this year. Maybe you should wait a while longer. Whats the rush?

i had a 2 foot wide ten foot long poplar trunk .... laying on the ground.. that sprouted for upwards of 2 years ... cut each sprout at ground level.. and use something like at the link to apply one drop of round up or stumpkiller.. to the cut ... the real key here.. is the one drop.. killing trees has nothing to do with spraying ... keep at it.. though i dont know if you will ever apply enough.. to kill the behemoth behind ... gotta love neighbors ... ken Here is a link that might be useful: link

Has the temp in your garage been above the low 40s? If so, that's likely the cause. I've linked to a thread from 2009 that provides some helpful info on how to keep figs dormant. I can't know for sure...but in my very limited experience, a first-year, in-ground, uncovered fig in zone 6 is surely dead. Assuming that your neighbor's plant is the same variety as yours and assuming that there are similar "microclimates" (e.g., sun, wind, water, etc. exposure), I would presume your plant dead. I had my third-year in-ground fig covered for the winter and still lost a fair number of tips. But at this time in zone 6, it is showing new leaf and breba crop growth. Temps here have been 50s-60s during the day and 40s (sometimes high 30s) at night. Regarding your neighbor's, I'm wondering if he did anything to protect it from the weather. Also, where is it situated...is there natural protection?

We are in the same position. Our fig tree was about 20 feet high and just as wide until this past winter killed most of it. The main trunk started generation shoots so we cut the trunk back to where the shoots are and cut all of the other bare dead trunks down to the ground. We left a few of the larger shoots coming out of the base and cut off the rest of the suckers. We figure we will see what starts to take off while trimming out the new suckers over the summer. Hopefully we will get figs next year.
