Some late bloomers for Friday

I've been on a quest to expand my late bloomers for the past several years. This year I have several new lates that were acquired last fall.

TIFFANY SHADE is a newer Curt Hanson intro. I wasn't too sure about the first blooms, but the flowers have improved with the heat and the bloom is really growing on me. One thing I'm liking about this one is how quickly it multiplies. I bought a single fan last fall, and now it has five. Only one has a bloom scape this season.

SENECA SPIRIT is by Tom Rood of Grace Gardens. It is a near white that looks very graceful. It didn't have many buds this time, but it is a new one and still being grown in a pot. It has multiplied from two fans to three.

BERMUDA CORAL - This one was recommended by Val and some others on the forum. It has an old-fashioned look but is supposed to have scads of buds when mature. It only had 8 buds for me this first time.

KENTUCKY LUCKY is a late by John Rice and has the Reckamp polychromes in its background. It bloomed on short scapes this first time and only had 7-8 buds per scape. This is one I will love when it matures.

BEST FOR LAST is a 2011 Rice intro that blooms very late in my garden. It has 14-16 buds per scape in the first year and nice, tall scapes. Rice says the color is pink, but it's lavender in my garden. The petals have very thick substance and they hold up well when temperatures are in the 90s. Not as well at 103.

I'm very pleased with the two Trimmer lates I added this spring. Both are well-budded rebloomers that hold up fairly well in the heat.

I also got two of Judy Davisson's new late bloomers last fall.

WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS has just started blooming. It has a moderate amount of buds - 7-8, but five scapes.

The other Davisson, GOLDIE GOLDDIGGER, should have its ffo over the weekend.

The last new late I have is one I really love, CARDINAL DESIRE, hybridized my Mike Grossman. I bought it as a single fan, and it's still a single fan with only 7 buds in its first year. But the color and teeth really appeal to me.

My favorite of these is Cardinal Desire. I also like Best For Last and Tiffany Shade. You have some nice late ones. Mine are burning up here.. Ellie

Mine may be burning up here. Some of the foliage looked awful last night after 103 degrees. I just hope I'll have enough foliage to keep the buds on the lates and rebloomers.

Spanish Fiesta is one of my favorite blooms(especially right now, since it is reblooming). It looks like the Trimmer's picture. As you may recall, I also have Parrot Jungle. Dan Trimmer told me that PJ was more for hybridizer and SF for just enjoying, but PJ couldn't have been prettier this year. Mantis, I got my SF on the auction. Avedon, your Orchid Corsage may surprise you. Thank you Maryl, I love it myself. This is the first year Indian Summer has been good about clumps. Thanks for all your nice comments. Luvngdirt, Now you know how we Northerners felt when we had no blooms yet, and we jealously drooled over your Southern pics! (LOL) Yes, I know where Manitowoc is, about 100 miles north of me, along the Lake Michigan shore. I'm in Sturtevant, just west of Racine. No, I don't think it's crazy to miss the cold weather. It's great to have a change of seasons. Still have some DLs that haven't bloomed yet.....will post more later, Julie

Ok, Judy here is a good example of how it works in my garden for late and extra late. I will use Olallie Gardens intros late bloomers as my example. Go down their late catagory and pick ones listed as mid September in their zone. So VT is I think a zone 4. Planted in my garden that mid Sept starting daylily starts mid August. But mid August is late here as regular season stuff is blooming on the 4th of July. So as you bring it south, it starts blooming earlier than the date they list.

Maryl - Apache War Dance is registered ML and starts blooming in my garden about five days before August Cherry, registered as a late bloomer. Neither reblooms. On a 96 degree day like this Apache War Dance loses its red and becomes a good strong orange with a red eye by evening. August Cherry fades a bit, but still looks pretty good at the end of the day. Apache War Dance is registered as being 4.5 inches, but it's more like 5.5 inches here. August Cherry exceeds the hybridizer's registered bud count of 17 in my garden. It's not well budded this season, but it's had in excess of 20 buds a scape several seasons here. I prefer the blue red of August Cherry to the orange red of Apache War Dance, but that's just a personal preference. Both are dormant and should survive bad winters in pots. Debra

I'm glad you talked about the foliage looking bad. I was just out there deadheading and watering and if I could have stood the 100 degree heat any longer(and it's not even noon yet), I would have stopped to exam what is going on with a few of my daylilies and their yellowing leaves. As it was, they are watered and now they are on there own until it cools down....Your batch here is impressive. I usually don't like "veining" but it's not offensive at all in the brightly exhuberant Wild Apple Autumn. I can't imagine the two together (hurts my minds eye) but my next favorite is Cardinal Desire. Beautiful color and discreetly toothy.......Maryl

Those are some beautiful lates! My very very favorites are Cardinal Desire and Kentucky Lucky. Cardinal Desire is so.. dressy :) Very pretty flower, the color, the edge, the throat.
I like both Trimmer's late Autumns, but Lake Tahoe more :)

Thanks for all the info on the cultivars! Best for Last looks impressive; one doesn't often get a lavender that lasts at all in the heat. And Wild Apple Autumn again catches my eye.

Nat - Dressy is a great adjective to describe Cardinal Desire.

Mantis - Both Best for Last and Wild Apple Autumn both stood up the heat at 98 degrees. I wonder what they will look like after today. We hit an all-time record high of 109 this afternoon.

Wild Apple Autumn looks just like a color I would expect for autumn. Very nice.

I have Kentucky Lucy and it is blooming here now. I just posted a AM and PM pic of it. I rather like the way it looks here in the PM.

I forgot one of my new lates. It's August Cheer, an older Goldner daylily. It's not an early morning opener, so I haven't been able to get a great photo of it yet.

Beautiful Debra, and I like them all. BERMUDA CORAL and SENECA SPIRIT tie for favorite for me as those two really catch my attention. So nice to see WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS as I bought that one also last Fall as well as GOLDIE GOLDDIGGER.

Rita - Tom Rood of Grace Gardens in Finger Lakes, NY, has introduced several late bloomers. He has one called Sanibel Coral out of Bermuda Coral that I really wanted to add, but he was sold out.

The last of my new lates, MISS GOLDIE GOLD DIGGER had its ffo today. The bloom is a very large, bright flower that can't be missed.

Oh Debra, I just LOVE it!! Love it. So glad you posted that picture of MISS GOLDIE GOLD DIGGER.

I will have to look into those lates you mentioned. Not that I have any room left ha-ha.

Rita - Glad you love Goldie, since she's going to be blooming for you too! I wish I had watered her more, so she would have more buds. Goldie looks wonderful with We Are the Champions, too! I'll have to photograph the two together some day in the next week.
