Vanderwolf's?

Hi all!

I bought this tree this spring at a local nursery.

It was labeled "French Blue Scot's Pine", but I knew it wasn't (it's a five needle pine). Of course they insisted it was a scots pine. Anyway, I bought it with a five year warranty and now I'd like to ID it.

I also mail ordered a Vanderwolf's Pyramidal pine this spring and am wondering if that's what it really is.

The Basal sheath is shedding now (on both), the needles are the same length, but the contrasting lines down the needles aren't quite as pronounced, and both are shedding older needles right now also. Perhaps just soil/placement difference (one's in the ground, the other in a pot.)

Is there any other pine that is very similar that it might be instead?

you are kidding .. A 5 YEAR WARRANTY ..... yikes ... no wonder he doesnt know what a scots pine is.. lol ...

Here goes!
Photo shows both Pines, Vanderwolf's on left (in pot) and the Pine in question on right.
They just seem different when I compare them like this.

I will have to get pics of the whole tree tomorrow. This is all I took today, KEN. lol It was a large b&b transplant about 8 years ago or so. Most Vanderwolf's that I see are fuller and fairly blue. This one is more sparse - looks like a white pine growing in Colorado (only reference I had from my childhood years). The central leader died three years ago and it still has no leader and really hasn't grown much in the last few years at all. The cold issue could be correct, Embothrium. The last two winters we had were brutal and this just started this year.

It looks/sounds like it got too much water. Did the branches start turning brown on the bottom first then work their way up to the top? Im a newb but the conclusions ive drawn on how to kill a conifer (based on planting 250 +/- in the last 3 years - Ive lost about 5-8) 1. Too much water. 2 Too much water. 3. Too much water. Heres a $400 (on sale for half in december) Iseli Sherwood bristlecone pine I drowned last year. Note how it still has some green on the top. Once the temp drops in the fall, much less watering (if any) is required on new plantings from that season. I watched this this brown from the botttom up

Slide rather than lift. Maybe even drag across the lawn on a tarp. If instead using something with wheels tip it over and put it next to the tree after the tree is trenched around, then slide the tree into the conveyance rather than subjecting the tree - and yourself - to much lifting. Also cut through what appears to be all of the roots before doing any prying whatsoever.

second and third pix dont help too much due to the sunshine ... first pic. i would probably remove the leftmost leader .. and walk away for this season ... i would not shorten any other leaders or the prime leader ... with such.. imo ... there is always next year ... if you get antsy and do to much.. to fast .. you cant glue them back on ... think in tree time.. counted in decades... and you should see that there is no real hurry with tree pruning ... ken

Those buds (in clusters, light red brown, ovoid, and sharply pointed) along with the general photo of the entire plant and the whorls of needles, the light grey smooth bark, etc, etc, do suggest Pinus flexilis.

Can you do a close-up (like the last two pics above) of a second-year shoot, please?

Clearly a white pine of some sort, but on the current pics, I can't exclude e.g. Pinus peuce (Macedonian Pine). A pic with a clear view of the bark on a second-year shoot will help.

i am stumped.. i cant find mine ... if i ever had it.. lol ...

i wonder if i bought one years ago .. and it died ... and it is just imprinted in my head .. though i usually leave dead ones on the database... for just such clarification .. go figure... sorry .. no pix..

Wait, did I just say that?? Never mind.... you can NEVER have too many conifers! ;)
