Bass, I can't help you with your question but maybe you can help me. How does LSU Purple do in your area in containers?
I was given some cuttings a few weeks ago and they shot up like "Jack in the Bean Stalk". Does LSU Purple produce well and how is the taste? Does it ripen early or late? Any info from those in Zone 6 is appreciated.

I didn't have LSU purple for that long, but from what others tell me it does well in containers, and should be a good fig.

I really like the Vista, but not sure how it will adapt here. Any one have tried it in ground in the Northeast?

Vista Mission (Jon's cultivar, a probable seedling of Mission, if I remember correctly), might have characteristics similar to Mission. Mission according to Condit, did well in the northeast, although it was not as hardy as Celeste. If Vista Mission is like Mission, it will grow to be a very large tree, so may require a lot of trimming. Italian Golden Honey (from Paradise Nursery) is an heirloom variety known as Marseilles aka Lemon, Lattarula or White Marseilles. It was grown by Thomas Jefferson at Monticello and was reportedly his favorite of some 20 varieties, so might do well in the area also. LSU Purple, a granddaughter of Celeste and daughter of Hunt, should have some hardiness. LSU Gold, Sal's, and Celeste should be good as well. If I had room for one tree and wanted a light fig, I would decide between Marseilles and LSU Gold. I would pick LSU Gold, even though it may take a little longer to bear. If I wanted a dark fig, I would decide between Vista Mission and Sal's. Sal's is probably hardier, but the few figs that I had from a first year Vista Mission seedling last year were really sweet and well flavored, especially considering the lateness of the season. I would pick Vista Mission for the dark fig.

In regards to hardiness of mission and vista from Jon, the ones I have, have both been in the ground for two winters now. Mission's been killed down to the ground each time; Vista was untouched this past winter, don't remember about last.

I would like to notice that Blue Celeste is different and better fig than Regular DFIC 50 Celeste.It does have Blue hue Figs and is Hard as nails.A must have

choose, please keep in mind the ground
where the evergreen was planted is probably
acidic prepare the ground well with lots of
lime and a nice amount of bone meal.

Well Mark:I never had ripe fruits from my young Atreano,but Effdeve on this forum had tasty fruits in Long Island New York.
I had 2 fruits from My young LSU Gold and they were very good.
Looking at picture of fruits on this 2 I can see Atreano has a more closed eye wich is a +.
LSU was outside this winter,with a bag of leaves over it and came out now with no winter Damage,wich is very good.
Wich one is tastyier I will find out this year,as both of them are very healthy and able to produce normal fruits this year.

I was confused between all these figs, so I ended up planting Sal's in my front yard, and I found a spot against my greenhouse, and planted LSU gold. I like to plant figs against a structure for more protection, so every spot I can find I'll be planting a fig.
so far I have 9 figs in the ground. This fall I'll be having fun protecting them. :->

Does anyone still "bury" their fig trees? If it was planted in the ground, we would bend it over to bury. How do you protect your trees for the winter?

BONSAIST : ....I HAVE JUST SUCESSFULLY OVER-WINTERED THREE "ATREANO" TREES. ALL THREE, 5 FOOT TREES, ARE GROWN IN A VERY LARGE CONTAINER (20 GALLONS), AND THE TRUNKS ARE TIED TOGETHER, MAKING ONE BIG FAT "COMPOSITE TRUNK". MY STORAGE-SHED IS UNHEATED, AND I DID NOT WRAP MY TREES BEFORE STORAGE. I ONLY WATERED THE TREES TWICE OVER THE WINTER, JUST TO KEEP THE SOIL FROM GOING BONE DRY. I THINK IT'S EASIER FOR ME TO HANDLE CONTAINER-GROWN FIG TREES, AS I'M NOT INTO THE "WRAPPING-OF-THE-FIG-TREE" ROUTINE.

I RECOMMEND THIS VARIETY WITHOUT RESERVATIONS, AND I'VE LEARNED THAT THIS VARIETY DOES WELL IN OUR SHORT SUMMER GROWING SEASON. I HAD DOZENS OF DELICIOUS, SWEET FIGS LAST YEAR, STARTING IN LATE AUGUST, AND GOING INTO THE FIRST WEEKS OF SEPTEMBER. I HAD NO SOURING, NO SPLITTING, JUST SWEET, STICKY FIGS !!! (LET THIS VARIETY HANG ON THE TREE FOR A FEW DAYS AFTER TURNING GOLDEN-YELLOW, UNTIL THE FIGS BECOME VERY SOFT, AND ALMOST FALL INTO YOUR WAITING FINGERS. AND, DO NOT, REPEAT, DO NOT, OVERWATER TREES WHILE FIGS ARE RIPENING !!!!!) SEE SOME OF THE PREVIOUS POSTINGS FOR THIS VARIETY.

IF YOU HAVE THE ROOM, PLANT YOUR TREES IN CONTAINERS, OR, VERY LARGE STORAGE TUBS, AND OVER-WINTER IN AN UNHEATED GARAGE, OR, SHED, AND YOU'LL BE DONE WITH THE WINTERING-OVER PROBLEMS. MY CONTAINER IS ON A DOLLY FOR EASY MOVING AROUND.

thanks for the recommendation, I don't have Atreano at this point. I do have many trees in containers about 100+ and still don't have Atreano. I overwinter my trees in the garage and in the greenhouse. usually the young ones in the greenhouse, and when they're over 3 gallon they go in the garage.
