what lavenders do well in the north?

I know...herb forum. But I think cottagers grow more lavender than chefs do!

I have one lavender that's doing fabulous in zone 6. But I don't know what type it is. I want more. What should I get? Any zone 6ers have a favorite lavender?

I'm a cottage garden who has lots of lavendar in my perennial beds. It's so easy to grow--full sun, well drained soil and has no need for fertilizer. My favorite is Hidcote lavender. I love it compact habit and upright purple/blue flowers in summer. It smells wonderful! I also have Munstead lavendar, but I definitely like the Hidcote better. Good luck!

I love chatting about lavender! :-) To get lavender to bloom, you must trim it periodically. I trim mine about the time I cut back buddleia and grasses. Then, I cut it again after the first bloom has finished. I get thousands of blooms on my 2 year old Spanish Lavender. My Provence and Munstead are new this year, but I expect similar results next year. I use the lightweight cordless Black & Decker Hedge Hog trimmer. I shape the lavender to make it rounded -- no flat tops. Over-watering is the biggest enemy, so this is a perfect plant for drought-tolerant, deer-tolerant, butterfly gardens. If my husband had his way, our entire garden would consist of lavender, nepeta and buddleia! Lately, he's decided to add 'Miss Huff' lantana to that list. My caryopteris are doing great for the same reasons. I am probably going to try Goodwin Creek next. My Spanish lavender makes a big show when my dianthus blooms, then the Provence Lavender and now the Munstead. I just have a few of the latter, and if they overwinter well, I'll increase the count.

Linda, I was a bit disappointed in Red Friday. Well it was a bonus after all so I did not research it. After that I read somewhere it gives toothy edges so before removing it or maybe moving to a worse location I decided to try. I think I mentioned already that I crossed it with Chance Encounter. Well in my notes today I found I did several other crosses too. My question was - in your experience, does it give teeth or at least a hint of teeth to any flower or mama should have teeth as well? (I remember you wrote one of your crosses and pod parent had teeth). If I have a flower on my cross it will probably be in 2 years, if that, so I wondered if I should even try again (for some reason I didn't start seeds from any other cross other than CExFR). The others I tried with RF were just older plain round blooms. Thanks!

There is a device called a Thermocube you can use.... one model turns power on/off at 35F/45F. This is just a 2 outlet out of one device with a built in thermostat. The nice thing about keeping palms above freezing is you avoid constant bud freeze. I use these devices with my Washys/Tree ferns and will expand to all the palms outside the big enclosure this year. This is a good range to keep it from growing- the cooler it stays the less the concern for light, I have overwintered plenty of palms in leaf cages (or the like)where there is no light. I grew Lavender Augustifolia (Munstead) in Z6 Virginia. I planted it in the spring and by the following spring, I was collecting huge bunches of lavender from just one plant. It was on a west facing slope in a terraced bed of perennials. Good drainage is a requirement for them. The important thing with most perennials is to give them time to get established before cold or heat sets in. I tried Augustifolia here in San Antonio and it couldn't take the heat. I also planted Lavender Provence this past spring and it is doing great in a raised bed on the full sun southwest side of the house. Spanish Lavender may not be cold hardy where you are. I planted some of those in the spring and they are doing okay in this heat, but not as well as the Provence.

Foxglove,

speaking of lavenders, do you do anything with them? I have munsteads and have harvested the blooms for drying. I noticed though that the blooms are less fragrant than the leaves? Is that your experience with hidcote as well?

Yes, I do believe that the Hidcote foliage is more fragrant than the blooms. I harvested some last year and thought the same thing. I do love Hidcote though--I believe it to be even more fragrant than Munstead.

I've noticed that after the baby falls in the lavender, she smells like a granny. When she falls in the sage she smells like dinner....

Do the leaves dry as well as the flowers, because they do seem to be smellier on whatever I have, too.
