Nothing in a 5' X 5' square, the space should be mulched, to keep weeds down. Okay if you must, plant strawberries around the fig tree. If you plant strawberries, put stepping stone between the rows of strawberries,so you can pick both the strawberries & the figs, without stepping on the plants.
You can plant another fig tree or blueberry plant 10 feet on center. Old fig trees can get to be 15 wide, if not pruned.

I planted sweet potatoes vines. These vines are very aggressive it covers the ground like a carpet and prevent any weed from growing. Also the land escape looks very good.

I have sweet potatoes growing under my kadota. Abe is right...the vine is very lush and pretty. Also...it's a good moisture indicator. The sweet potatoe vine seem to wilt when the soil dries out before the fig tree does. So if I see that sweet potatoe vine wilting I know I better get some water to the fig as well.

It produces pretty well too.

Gorgi, by "annual" marigolds are you referring to calendulas? (I'd always heard that it was really the calendulas (English "marigolds") that discourage nematodes not the African marigolds that most Americans are used to.)

Gorgi, you are right.
French marigolds (Tegetes patula)-Tangerine,Happy Days,Lemon Drop.
Their are for other species, African marigold (T. erecta), South American matigolds (T. minuta), but French is the best in most test plots.
Chrysanthemum (C. morifolium) Escapade.
Partridge Pea (cassia fascicubta) Showy Crotalaria
Just to name a few others.
