Question for those who have 'Ledgewood' daylilies

Adding a 'free' garden shot for those who took the time to look. lol

I know on his web page he lists the bud count on many of the Ledgewood plants that I have in the 20's. I would like to know how other people do with bud count as I only get 8-10 on all of his flowers that I have as well as seedlings from them. I am wondering if it's just because I am too far north.

Lisa: I have several seedlings I started back in 2010 and bloomed in 2011 with Ledgewood Silver Linings as the pod parent but pollen is unknown.

If I had Ledgewoods with low bud count,and I wanted to cross it with something, I'd pick a parent with high bud count that is a known high bud count producer and see if it would produce offspring with higher counts. Not foolproof but for me, I'd try it to see what happens.
These are pics from last year and I would say I got no more than 5 buds that opened on one scape. But then again, they were only a year old (at least to me) so I give it 2 more years before I decide what to do with them. Unfortunately I don't know who the pollen parent was.

The hybridizer of the "Ledgewoods" daylilies is a female - Gunda Abajian, although she lists her husband Tony as helping.
I have heard people north of me ( zones 5/6 ) mention that some are marginally hardy. I have only 3 of hers but they have a decent bud count: Ledgewood's Calico Blues, Ledgewood's Ring of Fire, and Mystical Illusion.

The plants themselves are hardy-they always return and don't struggle after the winter-just low bud count. But you can't complain about the blooms-they may be few-but they are standout.

Hi Newyorkrita, thanks for bumping this up for me. I'm the same as you, I have to buy from pics as I live in the UK and there is no way I can see what these would look like in Britain---I just have to take the chance. Also I am VERY new to daylilies and don't really know what the hybridizers mean by pale violet-lavender, pale pink-lavender etc (esp when lavender plants themselves can vary from the very dark blue "Hidcote" to palest pink/white!!) I haven't even seen my first "lavender" dl variety in flower yet, never mind subtle variations---but I digress. Yes, I know when I look at some of those blues that they can't really be that colour. In fact I had a good laugh when I was looking at a hybridizer's website whose varieties I like (Not the Ledgewood's page). When I looked at the new seedlings page and clicked on one in particular to get a bigger picture, there was a nice big wedge of "Computer Blue" on the bottom petal. OOPS! That's why I was hoping some of you grew some of them so that I could get a better idea of colour from your pics. Same with the Lambertsons' varieties. I know someone over here who has Calico Blues but it hasn't established enough yet for me to have a piece of it from him. He thinks perhaps next year he may be able to split it, he's put my name on it :o) It is sooo expensive though to import DLs from the USA that I need to have a better idea of the plants rather than just the hybridizers info. I also like Hidden Heart and Winter Wolf so if any of you have real pics that would be great. thanks, Nikki

I would leave well enough alone as the plant has been stressed enough. I would wait until it has fully healed from this ordeal before messing with it. When I have had similar experiences, I just leave them alone and see what it looks like the following year. That is just my opinion. David

Questions for those who have misting systems

It makes sense to me that cuttings would like warm temps but I've found that some root better in cooler temps such as Gallicas and a few others. Some people think cool temps are a lot better for rooting. It seems to me that I have not seen misting systems in many greenhouses. It seems like humidity is high anyway in a greenhouse. Just wondering if a greenhouse would solve part of my problems. I am on a budget so am looking at cheap ones on ebay but don't know why they make so many of them in green plastic. I don't know if plants get enough light under green plastic. Seems like in a small greenhouse a little cool mist vaporizer might be all I'd need. I did find an 18" outdoor misting fan at Home Depot for $89. Have to connect it to a hose. Small " misting systems" with no fan are a lot cheaper. Maybe I'll try that. Am not sure how to rig it up but probably can figure something out. Vapor, I have used mosquito dunks here for other things...they are good.

Glass can be so frustrating to clean and I agree @Annette Holbrook(z7a) they show dust. I did LED lighting in mine but chose only to light the top and not let it shine through shelves. I know it might not be the best option for you but I like the effect in my kitchen.

Lovely garden shot. Every Ledgewood intro I ever had has left this garden and I will never get another. They were just HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE here for me. Bud counts of 3-4 on some, and not much better on the rest. Needed heavy mulching for the winter.

I'm in Michigan and also haven't had any luck with Ledgewood intros. I think I sent a few to Ellie down south but don't know what they've done for her. The two I've kept both have low bud counts. I can't imagine they'll be here much longer.

Why waste your time with cultivars that have low bud counts and are marginally hardy. That is true for many southern cultivars. Rita wised up years ago.

That's what I was debating. No sense in using it to cross when the seedlings don't get any higher than the plant itself. I don't have any problems with them not surviving-and will most likely keep the few I have as I like them, just won't use any more for crossing. They are beautiful flowers-but judging by the response, must not like northern climates!

I suspect they like the south. I get great bud counts, and I have rebloom on the three that have bloomed. That being said, they sometimes wait until the second year to begin blooming. I have Pansy Eye, Firecracker and Jumpstart.

I have several of Abjian's. Some came from Chris in Michigan and probably didn't do well for her.

I had my first bloom on Ring of Fire and I love it....tried to order some more but the garden was sold out. Not sure of the bud count yet, but the flower is large and beautiful. My only concern is that it sits low in the foliage.
