I have a Black Mission planted in the front of my house facing South.....and it shows no signs of FMV.
The damned Voles at 99.9% of the roots off it last Summer and if actually fell over. I clipped off 2/3 of the top and placed the bottom in a pot full of soil and when I planted a month ago it had roots circling the pot.
I made a ring of rat-wire a foot deep in the ground around it and filled the trench with VoleStop aka Permatill.
Its putting out leaves and on nights when the temp is predicted to go below freezing a trafic cone covers it completly. The Voles have not bothered figs in the back yard eventhough they have tunnels under some of them. I guess they have more to eat back there. I'm slowly starving them out of the front and pissing them off with caster oil products. When we bought this property a few years ago they were completly out of control.
From what I have read Mission shows FMV well it has it.
Last year the leaves showed no signs of it.
I'm not sure its going to work in Va. zone 7b but I'll pot some of it if I must and keep it going.

In the ( south of Spain ), Andalusia is very difficult to find fig trees that support the temperatures of yours zones.
7a -17.7/-15.0 C
7b -15.0/-12.3 C.
The colder city in south Spain is Albacete (not in Andulusia community) and usually never achieve this temperatures.
If this type of trees exist in Spain is more probable in the north Catalonia and Aragon in the Pyrenees zone.

Hi Figsin:If you can multip;y it and plant it at about 30 to 45 degree to ground,so you can bent it down in winter,and then cover it with roofing asphalt,and then soil in top,you can grow any fig you want in zone 7b.
If your fig is indeed Mission without fig mosaic,then indeed you got a GEM there,and a lot of people,will want cuttings from you.
And like you say,Mission shows fig mosaic very vizible if it got it,so there is not a way that you could not see the yellow oval spots on almost every leaf.
It will be nice if you had a picture of the leaf and fruits so people will id,it as Mission,because many including myself,has a doubt you have a Mission there.
As a matter of fact i know is perfectly possible to have healthy Mission figs,but it will be nice to show it here on fig forum.
You see this is a very desirable fig,but because of FM,it makes the cuttings very hard to root.
I ordered it 2 times and all six cuttings died on me.
I do have one little cutting now that i traded with a fig forum friend here on fig forum,and it got 2 healthy leafes so far w/o,fig mosaic.I am not saying that is mosaic free but so far so good.Hope this will help

I got the Mission Fig from McDonalds Nursery in Hampton Va. probably about 2 years ago. They did not have anymore about 6 weeks ago.
It was a healty plant about 4 feet tall with plenty large leaves. I did not get any ripe figs after the Voles attacked it.
I guess it could be something other than Mission, but McDonalds has a good reputation as far as I know.
My doubts are that it will get enough sun to ripen figs where I have it planted, but its my most protected spot. Time will tell.

Any more thoughts on this?

Desirable Spanish Figs. This comes from Ray Givan's web site:

CarabasetaÂClear green skin with light red pulp. Main crop. Very sweet and highly flavored. Dried, they have an especially good quality.
RojaÂReddish brown skin with amber pulp. Two crops. Both brebas and main crop are large and of very good quality. Main crop resists rain damage.

In Spain are many good varieties of figs but in many cases the same variety has a lot of different names depending on the region where is grown, which does difficult to identify correctly a particular variety.

In my opinion, the most appreciated variety is "Coll de Dama" or "Cuello de Dama" it is an excellent fig in fresh or dried. Mainly, all the dried figs produced in Spain are of this variety. As far as I know, although it isn't a common fig tree, it isn't specially difficult to find in USA.

Xon is right when he says that the south of Spain has the warmest climate of Spain, the summers are scorching and, very important for figs, the autumns are long, warm and sunny (really, all year is sunny!). A good variety of this region can be a very disappointed fig in your climate. For example, "Coll de Dama" is a very late ripening variety.
