Where do you like to order your daylilies?

I'm getting ready to make some new flower beds and I would love to add some daylilies to it. I have some old standbys-tiger lily, stella d' oro, pardon me, and two others (can't think of their names at the moment!!) . I don't think I've got enough to trade yet-some of you have wonderful selections!! Any thoughts/suggestions appreciated!!

I have used many different sellers over the years and there are a few I would definitely go back and buy from again. Not because of gift/bonus plants but because the quality of their plants are outstanding. Listed in no particular ranking since these are the standouts so far.

Then there are the Lily Auction sellers who I would buy from again. I have to say there are a couple on the LA I would not buy from again given the quality of their plants but that is "lesson learned".

Melanie Mason is excellent to buy from. She sends great daylilies. In addition to being an excellent hybridizer she also sells daylilies from many northern hybridizers. These are often at excellent prices. Most of the REALLY good stuff is in the $20+ price range.

Mike Grossmann is another hybridizer that also sells daylilies from other hybridizers. He is a great source of southern daylilies at very low prices. He does this by selling single fans but if you are patient enough to wait for increase you can get many newer intros for under $30. one that I picked up this spring, as a gift for my mother-inlaw, was Spacecoast Shell Cracker (Kinnebrew 2007) for $15. I also picked up Spacecoast Sothern Belle (Kinnebrew 2007)for myself at a price of $15.

I bring them to work and give them to my co-workers. I do that with a lot of the extra divisions and seedling plants in the spring. This year I brought in 10 or so divisions of Siloam Doodlebug and 8 divisions of Snowy Eyes and a few of some others. I also bring in other plants, like Lady's mantle, iris, perennial geraniums and stuff. I hate composting perfectly good plants and I'm too lazy to sell them. Most of my co-workers are not die-hard gardeners like us and don't care about things like names and genetics - they're just happy to get a nice plant with neat flowers for free! I've been doing this for a few years and it's always fun to have people come back to me and rave over a plant I gave them a year or 2 ago.

Sending additional divisions is fine, as long as one has enough of a given hosta to do so and it is economically feasible. However, some hostas, especially newer varieties, are in high demand, but even after 2 years in the garden may remain large, single divisions. Thunderbolt and Dream Queen are perfect examples, with 2 years growth in the garden, they will be thick, stocky single divisions with very good root systems. Obviously it's not possible to send 2 or 3 divisions for the price of one. Montana Aureomarginata is another example, as it's one of my favorite hostas, but very slow to gain size and add divisions. I routinely have divisions of this one that are 2-3 years old, almost 2 feet tall, but still single divisions with good roots. Oddly enough, Blue Mouse Ears is another variety that is quite slow to throw additional divisions. Most minis are prolific once they are established, but I have a bunch of these that will be 3 years old this spring, and last year I checked and found that these large, stocky single divisions all have roots that are profuse, thick, and up to 12 inches long. Some have 2 eyes, but not a one has put out a second division with it's own root system. Again, this is a situation where one would have to dig up and ship 2 or 3 entire plants in order to send extra divisions. On more common, prolific hostas, most reputable sellers will send multiple divisions, and root systems should be good. However, some of the better known nurseries routinely send a single division, and when you look at the Hosta Finder, the price listed is always for a single division. If you do mail order, always be sure you specifically ask what size plant will be shipped to avoid disappointments. Like most people, I prefer to buy my hostas in person, so I can see exactly what I'm getting. And I'm the sort of customer who does not hesitate to gently tip a hosta out of it's pot to check the root system before I buy a plant. You will too often find that large, lush "bargain" hostas sold by places that don't specialize in hostas will have very poor root systems in spite of having multiple divisions with profuse foliage. This generally indicates that the plants have been treated with a chemical such as DAP that forces heavy foliage growth, but at the expense of root growth. And it's the roots you are really buying, not the foliage. Finally, if you prefer not to receive any free plants with an order, by all means let the seller know. I think most sellers would be delighted not to waste a plant on a customer who doesn't want it.

Don't get me wrong - we adore Peet's, but their specialty has always been dark-roasted coffees. We get the French or Italian in a just-up-from-powdered-Turkish grind, brewed through Chemex filters. I long ago broke the Chemex glass pot and realized it's the filters and the cone shape that make the difference. A cheap plastic cone works just as well, but the Chemex bonded filters are a must. Compare side-by-side with a paper filter and you can tell the difference immediately. We filter into a vaccuum pot if we're not going to drink it right away; it holds it very well for about 4-5 hours. On the Left Coast we are passionate about coffee and Starbucks fans are regarded with smirks. As you enjoy medium roasts with a lower acidity than dark roasted coffees - and many people do, I do myself on occasion - I'm wondering if you have tried the national brands of Chock Full o'Nuts (which ranked quite high in a Fine Cooking taste test a few years ago) and....Dunkin' Donuts. DD is making big ripples in the San Francisco Bay Area with a report by a Millennial blogsite that was just published yesterday. They included DD for a joke in a taste test against three of the highest-regarded new artisanal coffee roasters (so new they are post-Blue Bottle, who has gone from coffee cart to Establishment specialty in less than 3 yrs). DD came in second - no small feat! I've had all three artisanal coffees, and they're very good indeed. The short column from Eater SF is linked below. Trash - where do you keep yours and do you like it?

We also have much more recycles than trash. So I need a larger bin for recycle, and a small one for trash. I like the idea of keeping the trash smaller because it will get emptied more often too. I want to keep the pull out narrow so not to give up much cabinet space. So the trick is to find 2 trash can that are narrow, and together take up about 24" depth. The double bins I saw on Rev-a-shelf were all at least 12 - 15" wide, and much less than 24" deep. Also they are much shorter than under counter height, so not an efficient use of space. The photo from Judydel looks closest to what I want. What other brands should I look at? We also started composting recently. Right now I just use an old bread bag to collect stuff during the day, and then dump it in the compost bin after dinner clean-up. My BFF was composting years before it was fashionable. She didn't even have a disposal. She keep a small pretty ceramic pot w/lid on her counter next to the sink. She lined it with a bread bag, and collected her veggie scraps there. Every other day she would dump the contents into the compost pile. So I plan on getting a "compost pot" for my counter too.

I am going to assume that you live in the Indianapolis area. It might be good if you could visit some in your area. Sometimes the daylilies on the websites can look quite a bit different than in person, and it also gives you an idea of what the foliage and branching habits look like if you're into that sort of thing.

I have never ordered or been to any other place except the one here in southern Indiana called Lakeside Daylilies, so I don't have any experience with any other place.

Choosing a source where the plants are grown, that is located in your hardiness zone, ensures that the plants should grow well in your area.

Search the AHS Source list and AHS Display Gardens and see if there is a garden located near you. Local sources are the best! For plants and advice!

Soules Garden, in south suburban Indianapolis, would be a great garden to visit since you are in Indiana. That's where I bought my first daylilies that weren't minitatures. Many of my family member live in the Indy area.

You will need to do research to see if the ones you choose are hardy in your area. I do this by going to Northern sites and seeing if they are selling what I like and also this site is great. We have several Northern people who post pictures. Judy
