What was Your Most Embarassing Moment in the Garden?

I usually do a post like this over at the Antique Rose Forum,

but i like it here too and would love to hear your experiences...

Mine all seem to occur in my front garden....and include

ripping off my shirt during a bee attack!

The other one, I was taking a perennial out of a pot, pushed

it out from the bottom with my thumb, pulled out the plant

with my left hand and of course my thumb was still thru the

bottom of the now empty pot-but at first glance-all i could

think was 'oh my god there is a thumb in here'! and screamed

like an idiot, a couple was walking by but i pretended not

to see them...

Squirted myself in the face with the hose a few times. I did it deliberately to cool off. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Years ago, I had just spread a bunch of purchased compost all over the flower beds when I saw a couple of slender leaves emerging, pretty things, & I gently dug around until I found that they were growing from teensy little bulbs. I was a sort of new gardener, & I was (& still am) very excited by the sort of serendipity or happenstance or feral nature of garden surprises, so I watched the new little bulbs to see what kind of flower they made. I watered 'em, I mulched 'em, I guarded them like they were solid gold. One day, before I got any flowers but after they had popped up all over the place, a neighbor looked at my little experiment & asked, "what are you going to do about all that nut grass?" I stammered out what had happened, including the mulch/water/compost, & he thought for a minute & said, "Well, it *is* a very healthy-looking stand of nut grass."

two crinums given to me as seeds several years ago. They are on alternating schedules and one always seems to have a stunning purple bloom on it. And weirdly (I did not expect this at all) white impatiens. I put a bunch in for the wedding last year figuring they wouldn't last long. But I found an apparently perfect spot for them. I've heard that with just the right conditions, they can be perennials down here. I think I may have found those conditions (bright, bright shade until late, late in the afternoon, when they get less than an hour of full sun. And I don't water them, ever.) Many that were in different parts of the yard have given up and died, or got leggy and got pulled. But these happy little mounds still look great nearly a year later.

Well, it was definitely an ah-ha but not in 2010. More like 2007. I've lived here again since 2005 and for a couple years I toted birdhouses and decorative stuff back to the garage for the winter. That was a real pain because I have a lot of yard things and I want to keep them in good shape. In the early winter of 2007 I thought I would just put a large plastic bin in each area (patio, hosta bed, west Sun & Stars yard, etc.) and put my decorative things and birdhouses in that. And I tarp or cover with contractor bags all my outdoor chairs and benches. No more dragging them around. I even store my hoses under the tarps on the benches. Most of the bins are brown or green and they aren't even noticed. When spring arrives, I just put stuff back out and store the bins in the garage. I have even used that storage for the screened porch things, out of sight. So I have five main garden areas and five bins. Saves a bunch of running around. BTW, the bins have never leaked nor have I had a lid blow off. Sunny

We live in a mountain community and our street/development has less than 15 homes on it. We each have at least 2 acres of land around us, so . . . while I can see a few of my neighbors homes, I see them at a distance. One morning a few Winters ago, I was looking out my front windows when I saw a strange man walking down my next door neighbor's loooong driveway towards their house. This, I could see, was not my neighbor, his wife, or their cleaning lady. I didn't want to ignore it, as we all watch each other's homes out here, so I call my neighbor at work. I told him what I saw and he asked if I could see his cleaning lady's car in their parking area. His wife was traveling out of town on business, so he knew it wasn't her. Nope, no cars anywhere. So, he asks me to call the police, as he's actually answering my call during his class (he's a professor at the university). He then told me in a whisper to tell the police that a specific side door was unlocked. I called 911 and a couple of minutes later I see a police car rushing up their driveway. Because of the angle of our two homes, I couldn't see anything else. Later that evening, my neighbor called to tell me what happened. The police officer entered the house very quietly with his gun drawn . . . only to confront my neighbor's cleaning lady carrying a basket piled high with clean, folded laundry. The poor woman was frightened out of her wits, threw the basket of clothes in the air, and almost passed out at seeing a police officer there pointing a gun at her and yelling, "Halt! Put your hands in the air!" The guy walking down the driveway was her adult son. They were afraid the driveway was too slick for her car to get up, and so her son drove her and then walked her up the driveway so she wouldn't slip. He had parked his car down on the main road, and they'd walked from it there. But, when I saw him he was coming back to the house a second time, bringing his mom something she'd forgotten in the car. So he was alone when I saw him. My neighbor didn't blame me. His cleaning lady didn't blame me, but I felt absolutely horrible and so embarrassed at what we innocently put that poor woman through!

I nearly severed my thumb with a scycle whilst working in a boyfriend's garden. I was not paying proper attention to what I was doing. Ever since I always think about that, whenever I use sharp tools.

I have this very old (holey) t-shirt that's my very favorite because it's so soft and comfortable. I don't usually wear it outside anymore because of the position of the holes. One day, I was on my back deck watering some plants (I didn't change out of the t-shirt because I was only going to be in the back for a minute) and here comes a man handing out flyers for a local church. I was very embarassed.

I was wearing one of those one-piece, terry, strapless lounge shorts after my evening shower. Went out to move the sprinkler and during the process, I "popped" out. Needless to say I did NOT look to see if anyone was looking!

not my own personal story, but one I read in a wonderful book called "Cultivating Delight" by Diane Ackerman.

since I don't know where my book is, this is paraphrased:

The author & her husband live in a semi-secluded spot, so one morning, her husband went out to get the mail or some such, wearing nothing but his boxer shorts.

One of the neighbor ladies was out walking that particular morning, & she nodded & stopped to say hello (what else're you gonna do?).

& his shorts fell down.

The neighbor lady looked at the trees & said, "nice quaking aspens".

& he agreed as how they were.

I had to quick unload a truckful of compost before going out to dinner. I finished, ran inside for a quick change of shirt and shorts and comb my hair before running off. Just as I was leaving dinner someone said, "looks like you're spending a lot of time in the garden". My mirror from the waist up did not reveal that my kneeling knee was almost black from kneeling in the compost. Here I am walking around talking to people with a big black dirt spot ground into my knee. I couldn't see it because it was just under my knee which I wasn't obvious (to me) when I sat down either. I felt like a messy child.

Well, one year (not too long ago I might add), I was trying to grow foxgloves from seed. And so these leaves started to emerge and I really thought they were foxgloves. And I nurtured the plant and marveled at how large it was getting. Finally, I was getting more and more skeptical about what it was. So I took a picture of it, and posted it here - and found out it was pokeweed. lol (this is the only story I'm willing to admit to!) :) Estelle

I nearly knocked myself out with my shovel handle.

I was taking out some bushes the builders put in (yuck). I had dug all around the bush and it looked to be free. I left the big shovel under the bottom roots and started pulling the bush was not free. So when I pulled it yanked the shovel and handle cracked me in the head so hard my hubby heard it across the yard. He said what was that? I said I just almost knocked myself out cause I am dizzy. I felt so stupid!

There is a big dog who's owner lets run free. I was on my knees digging up weeds and did not hear the dog come up behind me . It jumped me and knocked me down. I thought I was being attacked by a person and started to yell and screem and crawl away. When I got up, I was really embarassed cuz the dog is real nice and it was standing looking at me like 'whats your problem'.....

Similar to lavenderfem...I had planted some sunflower seeds and watered the spot diligently. Nothing came up for a while, but finally one did. I continued to baby my plant as it grew larger and larger. Finally it got flower buds...under the leaves. It bloomed with some very small yellow flowers uner each leaf division. I poked around online until I learned the plant I was nuturing was invasive velvetleaf. Haha!

One I can recall:

Early Summer 1999
As I was making my way through my herb garden up on the hill, I caught the toe of one of my sandals on a log that bordered one of the herb beds. (my body continued to move forward...my foot didn't!) I tripped!
I fell like a giant redwood, face down, my forehead hitting another log on the other side of the path, breaking my glasses upon impact. My nose stuck into the dirt and bark in the path like the beak of a freaking dippy bird! (I was so embarrassed!) I let out a war whoop from the pain, blood rushing down my face. I was spitting blood and spitting bark and dirt. I had a big gash on my nose with pieces of bark and dirt embedded in it. I thought it was broken as well. I couldn't see for the dirt and the blood. I busted my upper lip and loosened a tooth and it was bleeding too. I had a big bruise and lump on my forehead, and an abrasion. Both of my knees were banged up, bruised and cut. My elbows and the palms of my hands had bad scrapes and I couldn't get up.

My DH was up on the roof doing some repair work at the time. When I cried out, he leaped off the roof and hit the ground running. He was at my side in a heartbeat. How he kept from breaking something in that heroic leap, I can't say. He scooped me up and carried me down the hill and into the house and doctored me. When I related the story, he began to laugh in his big booming Scottish laugh. :)
I was sooooooo embarrassed!

I still have a scar on my nose to remind me of the time I tripped and planted my nose in the herb garden.
