Last year was the third year since we all got this fig (if I remember correctly). It finally took off, grew like a weed, and had about 3 dozen very nice figs. We'll see how production is this year, but the fruit is definitely worthwhile.

I don't have this fig, would love to get one. I tried Danny's delight figs last summer and they were great.
I know of a grower in New England who is selling this fig, and promoting it as hardy and productive up north.
They're only selling Hardy Chicago and Danny's delight.

Probably Tripple Brook Farm.....I opted for Hardy Chicago the first time, but will be getting Danny's next time around.

Maybe the 4th year will be a charm. I got 3 rooted DD trees on my own, a number of months before people on the forum, but same year.

Relatively mild Winter here in my area, and 3 DDs seem unscathed by cold so far. So if they're ever going to produce, they should have a good start this year.

Also got a tree for my neighbor, same year as mine, who tells me she got 3 "nice" figs. I'm not impressed by 3 figs in 3 years.

I got two yellow Brebas in second year that were fair but not impressive. DDs had a few figs on last (3rd) year, but dropped them early.

Diego: I'm more concerned about how they'll do inground in zone 7; they were touted to have been found growing inground in zone 5, Michigan, or some such cold area, and I want to see if they live up to their reported cold-hardiness. Any fig will grow in your climate. :-)

I'll gladly trade (rooted or unrooted) cuttings with others if DDs ever produce. I don't trade figs that don't produce--it's bad karma--(don't want anybody putting a mojo on me).

Logee's catalog said this fig gets 2-3 ft tall, is hardy in zone 5, so I ordered one with plans to put it in my veggetable garden in one of the permanent beds. I have no place to put a 12 foot tree!

Please anyone know where to buy this really cold hardy variety in Europe? I don't want to pay for phytosanitary certificates etc.

flax: Why would you want a fig tree that hasn't proven itself to produce figs? I've yet to hear anything positive about DD, regarding production, except for Diego, and he's in zone 10. A hundred DDs were procured by people on this forum, and their silence is deafening (as to production).

It was a very mild Winter in my area this year, and ALL figs were unscathed by cold. Winter started here on January 6.

laceyvail: I wouldn't pay too much attention to promo material; I've never seen a fig in my life that stopped growing at 2-3 feet, unless something was wrong with it (or it was bonsaied in a 2" pot).

One of the 3 DDs I have grew to 11 feet the first year, from a foot-tall rooted plant in a 4" pot.

My DDs are the most rampant growers I've ever seen.

mojo, Yes, the DD is a rampant grower, and like yourself I am waiting to hear something good about it other than zone 10.
How near the DC area do you live? Our Winters seldom start before Jan, and this Winter was anything but mild - we had one of the longest, sustained, below freezing periods since the big airplane crash near the 14th St bridge. And the Potomac froze over south of Alexandria, which is a rarity.
By the way, when are you going to share some info and scion material on those wonderfully producing, extra hardy fig trees you keep mentioning?.....Elder

marylandmojo: Fig trees / bush are very rare in area where I live (Czech Republic) so it is not necessary that DD will produce figs. I want to grow it for their nice leaves and rampant grow. My only condition is that it will not freeze in our winters without winter protection. My plan is to plant out it in public gardens and in some places in our city.

Tomas, if you're not interested in fig trees fruiting for you in your area, there are many other varieties that will grow well for you. You don't need to worry about wintering it in your area, and even if it dies to the ground, will sprout back and will grow as a shrub.
You can choose from any variety, such as Brown Turkey Celeste, Hardy chicago and many more known to be strong growers.

Yes I know, but I'am searching for variety which will not freeze without winter protection and which will not grow every spring from zero point. I know that there are some varieties like this in Alpine, Kazachstan or Kavkaz locations and DD looks like good example.

This might help break that deafening silence. I had a DD that was around 6 feet tall at the end of last summer, It must have had 30 or more very good figs on it. We ate them. I have no reason to think it only produces leaves and not fruit.

Perhaps the nursery of origin had other fig trees and co-mingled their wood cuttings? I have heard enough bad stories about DD and am inclined to think there are two seperate genetics posing as DD...

I said 'had a DD' because last fall a huge gopher got to the root system and ate it up. Fortunately I took cuttings off all the hardened wood and currently have a foot tall new tree of it to transplant this summer.

Plumfan, A mixup like that is very easy to do, and very hard to straighten out. It does seem that there are two descriptions floating around - a brown DD and a green DD. What did your (good) DD look like?

I don't know what I have said about DD fruit in the past, but right now I am going to reserve my comment on fruit color because I cannot remember exactly. I can tell you that it was not dark brown like Verns Brown Turkey, but I cannot remember just now if it was pure green either. It does seem like the interior was amber tho. I will def have to pay attention in the future. Seems they were smaller in size than my King, which are pretty good sized.
