Thanks for sharing your lovely pictures. Don't you just LOVE So Many Stars? I am anxiously waiting for it to bloom, it has stalks now. Two that gave done great for me this year are Curly Pink Ribbons and Octopus Hugs. I took many garden pictures today and am getting ready to post them. I get tired so easy and was taking a break from posting pics, now you have inspired me. But first I have to download them to Photobucket so I guess in the morning. forget where I bought mine. I bought lots of spiders and uf's last year. A good bit of mine came from Joiners and some from peidmont perenials. He has lots of spiders too!!...Your pics are wonderful. I will look for tomorrows posting. Ellie

maximus, yep...I've been a busy little dabber. I'm trying to beat the summer heat that is on the way. Once it gets here, I have trouble setting pods.

Dot, I have Curly Pink Ribbons on my wish list - thanks for posting that pretty pic. I have lots of seedlings that look similar to Octopus Hugs...some are 10 inchers. Now all I have to do is decide which to keep.

Kathy, Peacock Maiden is one of my favs also. It's been blooming steadily for the past week or so, for me. Love that IG child....I've got quite a few seedlings from IG that I started last year. Sure hope I get something as nice as Alakazam.
I don't remember if I got PM to set pods or not, but I don't think so. I'll have to go check now to see. :)

I am both jealous and excited at the same time.
Jealous that I have absolutely no DLs blooming yet, but excited at seeing my spiders and UFOs blooming (never had them until this year).
Starman's Quest and Peacock Maiden are two of yours that I just planted last fall.

Julie, I think you will really like SQ and PM. SQ is fun to watch...in my garden it starts out greyish lavender in the early am (like the pic above), then it changes to a pinkish purple around noon (that's when I think it is the prettiest) and by evening it's a dark purple. I'm sure you'll have blooms soon...hang in there.

If you don't mind me asking, what are you using to mulch under your day lilies? It looks like woodchips in surrounding area but something different directly below and around them?

...Just curious b/c I might be getting ambitious and putting in a new bed this weekend for more day lilies. Right not I just have a line of Stell D'Oro's lining a walk way.

Hi Chuck, What you are seeing in the pics is plain old dirt.

I'll explain. We added wood chips to our flower beds last fall. It was free from a local tree service. It was mostly pine and oak - fresh, untreated and clean. We spread it about 3 inches thick. It was very pretty for awhile. But since then our trees have added oak leaves and pine straw. I don't rake it up...I let it lie where it falls in the flower beds. It really helps to keep down the weeds. However, my daylilies are planted even with the soil line. I don't want 3 inches of mulch next to the plants - it would bury the crown too deep. So about once a month or so, I brush all the mulch back away from my daylilies in a circle. I believe it helps to prevent rot and it allows me to see what's going on around the base of the DL's. I want to see if there is any insect damage...how many yellow leaves, etc. Also, I don't want any fresh wood chips and leaves to decompose so close to my daylilies. Compost can get quite hot...especially green compost. Raking it back in a circle creates a shallow bowl around the plants so that when we get a hard rain the water will pool around the daylily - but water drains very quickly in my sandy soil. The water never sits more than a few minutes and only if it rains really hard. The mulch and other debris gradually works it way back down close to the daylily crown...and I rake it back with my hands when I get a chance...usually when I'm pulling a weed or cutting some dead foliage.

Hope this helps. I'm not an expert, but this method has worked well for me. Good luck with your new daylily beds! Let us know what you decide to plant.

I've set pods on Peacock Maiden in the past with Long John Silver and Emerald Eye, but mine is in part shade where I think the pods set a bit easier.

Shive, Thanks for the info about PM. I checked Tinkers and saw that it was pod fertile, but I haven't had a bit of luck. Now that I know you have, I'll keep trying. Loved your pics, especially LM. The spidery ones have really grown on me this year!

I LOVE the So Many Stars too! I can't find it for sale online. Ebay has two auctions but they are for single fans and I don't like buying single fans. Does anyone have any suggestions where I might buy it online?

lilyfantn, Glad you liked the pics. I always try to take 2 pics of each daylily - one flower close-up and one of the entire plant. That way I can see how much it grows each year.

I've got a Peacock Maiden to set pollen on a few other plants, but I've tried like crazy to get it to set pods and I've had no luck, none. It's one of the prettiest spiders(UFO) or whatever that I've ever seen. I've also got Long Stockings blooming for the first time and Christmas Ribbon had it's first bloom for me today. Both of these are pretty.

Mona, same here...PM pollen is fertile for me, but so far, still no pods. Love your pic of Christmas Ribbon! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for all the info above. I'll save it for when I put in some more DL's. I did put in a new bed but it's in a very shady area so I put in some ferns and no day-lillies.

Lots of nice pictures, I esp. appreciate seeing the ones from close to me. Now I'm trying to decide between Octopus Hugs and Long Stocking but it might have to be both.

Going to add one more to this thread...been waiting until I got a decent pic. I like this flower, but the scapes are not very strong. If the bloom gets wet it will bend nearly to the ground with the weight. But it's new this year. Maybe the scapes will get stronger next year?
