One tip i should like to share about growing figs in containers. I use a coarse growing medium that drains quickly so for drainage i only drill 3 small 1/4" holes, not in the bottom, but 1/8" up from the bottom on the side, so the pot does not sit on the drainage holes. I then tear a small piece of sponge, 1"x1", and use a small stick or dowel to push the sponge into the hole so half the sponge is inside and half sticking outside the hole. This way when i water, i can pour water into the pots and the sponges keep the water from gushing out the holes before the growing medium has a chance to absorb the water. This especially helps during the really hot months. If your getting lots of rain and you notice standing water in the pot, just pull out a sponge or two. If the sponges become clogged with silt, put new clean bits in : )

I also cant seem to grow spanish moss indoors. I had some indoors (very small amt, probably the same amt, that it outside) and that all died. Most of my spanish moss is in my unheated garage which gets very cold, but very rarely below freezing. So far it has done really well in there and has even made some flowers (which arent impressive at all, but still a sign of it doing good). Hppefully winter will pass soon so all my plants can start to actually grow again outside. The only plants of mine that seem to be growing are my mandevilla, pygmy palm, bougainvillea (which was in decline for a while), and one of my hibiscus. The pygmy palm has it in for me because those large spines poke all the time. i also think those pindos might get too big for the spot after a few years. The only thing that might keep it small enough to walk there is full sun. The pindos Ive seen in full sun are actually somewhat compact. It will still take up a lot of the room there, but not too overbearingly. If you have it in really full sun I think it might be all good. Good luck!

Jenny, crazy weather. We got an inch of hail with awful thunder....Then it will go down to December like temperatures again. This is nuts. My trees are in for good until we get August weather in December at this rate. I am about to get another cold shot after this next lightning storm I see coming in ten minutes. I'm glad you got warm for a day. I am happy for you))) Nice set up too)) Lucky, I think this crazy cold weather had taken many by surprise. I expected this in December, and at least another month to get ready in November. At this rate I can not have enough time to cover my ponds with bags of leaves because they have yet to fall. Geez, what a great bunch of good looking plants. That Banana tree would of croaked at 35 even lower than 50 is not good for it. Spray them once a month for prevent a mite infestation and you should be good to go)) Especially the banana tree. Good job. There is going to be a rain delay due to this storm for the World Series that I could not make it too(( Kvetch, it's nice to know that we are not suffering alone..Geez.lol You should here the thunder outside right now. I have never seen a storm like this in October, never. The temperature is going to drop like a bomb. That means I can keep walking around in my bathing suit and sandals after the next ten minutes..ha Crazy buddy Mike

The buckets have 3/4 inch holes drilled on the sides near the bottom. I bury the buckets in about 9 inches of mulch and the roots come out of the holes into the mulch and into the ground. This lessens the amount of watering that I have to do because they get their water from the ground. In the fall, I use a spade to cut the roots and bring the trees into winter storage.
