Violette deBordeaux leaves bleached

Ciao everyone. I was giving a fig away today, I knew I wouldn't be home so I set the VdB outside on the back porch so the person can easily pick it up through my back fence, well to my surprise he never picked it up and it was outside in the full sun today. We had about 50 degrees as we have been for a few days now and sunny. I brought the fig inside and noticed the leaves turned white in spots all over the leaves!!!!!! well I was horrified. I didn't think about the sun moving around to the side of the house that quickly and damaging it. My neighbor eventually came over to pick it up, I said to wait until I posted this to see what we can do if anything about this. I am sure the intense sun came on it hard, but they were under growlights all winter. Just too much for it i guess. Help guys, any suggestions. Will this fig croak?

MOST probably, it is a NON-hardened-figlet-issue... Other
than the un-attractive (drying?) leafs, it should recover,
advise to keep under some gradual moist dome in shade and
away from (drying) wind/sunshine).

Had the same problem with my Negronne & 2 other plants when I took them out. Its back indoors till May & I am certain theres no damage.

Thanks Dan! I have 120 cuttings in Perlite and Peat, most grapes, some olives, poms, and figs. Some of each are leafing, and I have no clue if there are roots. My only clue is brown edges on a few grape leaves, which means stress due probably to lack of roots. I have cut those leaves in half to eliminate stress, and sprinkled 1/4 tsp of Polyon 22-2/11 heat activated slow release granules (left over from the vineyard), over each planting band, and watered it in. They also all got 1 TBSP of vitamin B water. It's been 15-20 days since they were planted, so I think the progress so far is good. I'll watch for signs of that virus. I think my fig outside has it, but it's growing like a weed! That one is a no name variety that I got from Gurney's last year. I guess I'll have to Google the symptoms! Slow growth is fine with me because I don't have room for monster figs!! Suzi

That is what it looks like. I'm also seeing it on my brown turkey that has been in for a season and did fine last year. I did mulch it with the same compost that went into the mix for the raised bed figs. Should i use clear-x or something to wash out the compost in the ground? The only thing too rich in the mix could be the compost.

I live in Toronto, Ontario (Canada) which I believe is supposed to be Zone 5. I've no experience with VDB, but I've got a Desert King that I planted in ground last year. It's just a 3' stick of right now, but it has about 7-8 brebas coming up already. So it can work in ground if you protect it properly. The fruits that I got from it last year, when it was in a pot were very sweet and juicy. For winter proctection, I planted it at an angle and pinned the branches to the ground in the winter. I then covered it with about 6-8" of dry leaves and a piece of plastic on top. I weighed down the plastic covering with a few bricks at the corners to prevent the wind from blowing it away. The secret here is to keep it as close to the ground as possible to have the ground regulate the temperature. If you want to keep it upright over the winter, you'll need a much thicker insolation. I have a VBD fig and they are very different from petite negra. VBD bears long fruits with smooth skin -shown in the picture. Petite negra had a rounder fruit. The leaves on the VDB are also thicker than the ones on petite negra.

Most likely the scorched leaves will fall off but you did no damage to the tree itself. Even if every leaf falls off, the little tree will put out some new ones. Happy Easter!

don't worry one bit about the tree
new leaves will sprout with the coming
of may. when you place it outside
introduce it to the sun gradually.
