my entire garden in the beginning of june is purple

hi all.

My husband pointed out that all my current blooming plants are shades of blue and purple. I went shopping the other day and found myself again drawn to a blue veronica.. then i'm scolding myself in the isle, no more blue or purple, must find other colors. lol.

anyone else always drawn to the same color?

right now blooming I have:

clematis

salvia

baptisia

catmint

johnsone blue geranium(which i'm getting rid of, sick of it's leggy sprawling manner)

I do have other colors later in the season, but from now on, i'm banned from shades of blue and purple. :) jody

I'm trying to reign in my tendency to favor shades of red. All of the plants I love have red or reddish-pink flowers. I'm trying to mix in some blues and yellows. I love blue flowers, but for some reason it's the reds that I automatically fall for when I'm ordering plants.

I noticed my tendency towards purple early on, and I hope I've successfully mixed in other colors to break it all up. Purple is a wonderful color, though! I also have a thing for pink, love it mixed with purple, blue and yellow. What's really weird is that my normally pink and blue blooming hydrangeas are blooming purplish this year!

Purpleinopp, eventually the inflorescence elongates and resembles other hostas. It is blooming now in pale violet color, and it is not fragrant at all. I have one hosta blooming very well in white. It is Royal Standard, but I do not recall if it is fragrant. I have a rectification about Iris sibirica Over in Gloryland. Some stems have actually 4 blooms, so it stays here with me. Rouge, Eryngium alpinum is beautiful but it is not particularly long-lived with me(perhaps my climate?). Average lifespan for a clump is about 4 years. But you can let some seedlings grow(it seeds well if allowed). Eryngium Forncett Ultra has been growing for 15 years here and I have 5 giant clumps of it. When moved it will return from the roots. It is beautiful but very prickly(unlike E.alpinum, which is soft to touch) Gottagarden, I have made the Weigela tree out of a cutting taken from my B-I-L's garden. I let the main stem grow to 1 meter and then made a crown. I will make another one when the crown is higher than 1 meter. I'm not sure if it is easy to transform existing BIG bushes into trees, but why not try? Here it is as it looks in November: Here are some more June shots: Peony, bought as Shirley Temple. This one changes colour yearly, usually white with occasional red spot(like Festiva Maxima , her mother). This year opens light pink. My favourite peony, because it did never flop for me Iris White Owl, by far the best white iris for the North, wiped out the whole competition hands down. I googled it and got 1! relevant hit, whithout picture or description. How is it possible? Geranium pratense Summer Skies, the best of the new doubles(the white one with purple eye was a terrible flopper), stands well until the blooming is over. It is light violet with a touch of pink, not exactly a synonym for summer sky here. Geranium pratense Caeruleum Plenum, only a curiosity, as the plant has absolutely no vigor. My old Delphinium (seedling). Pay attention that the florets are shorter than on English ones, which makes them so much better to resist wind damage.

Thank you, Sheila. We used to be able to post pictures to the ARF right from our Flickr accounts. But, of course, if you delete your photo storage account, any communication that might still exist between the two sites is lost! I still visit the "Antique Rose Forum" from time to time, esp. during the cold winter months when I need a pick me up. I don't post much any more. I do love my gardens and my roses and have had many triumphs as well as disasters over the past five years since I did these postings in 2013. Disaster 1: I now have numerous roses that are 15 feet tall/long. 20 feet tall. And even taller and even longer. And I now realize that, although the idea of giant roses seemed romantic when they were 3 feet tall, they have created a variety of problems in my garden and I am in the process of getting rid of all my monsters except a couple of my most favorite. Disaster 2: I have hundreds of roses. From almost every class. And I have lost track of what I have and what I have lost. Disaster 3: Invasive plants: Japanese anemones. Mexican primrose. Salvia. 4 o'clocks. Sweet violet. Blue globe flower. Black-eyed Susan. And even morning glory. I find poison ivy/oak sprouting in my pots, I invite you to imagine my garden plots. Disaster 4: Thrips. And, though, I love every single one of my roses, even those I am culling, I have found after growing so many, that above all, I love my David Austin roses most. Here's some info that I posted a couple months ago in response to another quetion about false rosemary. I love my false rosemary and it is one of the toughest plants I've ever grown. It thrives in both drought and rainy conditions as long as it has well drained soil, blooms beautifully, has wonderfully fragrant foliage, and really attracts bees. Once it was fully mature it also became thick enough to smoother any potential weeds and since it's evergreen I never have to weed under it. I really need to trim mine back but I love how it looks so much that I haven't been able to do so yet. To propagate it just pin some of the longer braches to the ground and partially cover them with dirt. The branches will root themselves fairly quickly. My main plant is surrounded with smaller plants where it's branches have layed on the ground and rooted themselves. I bought my original plant at a native plant sale up in Gainsville several years ago and it was in a 3" pot. This is a florida native that is also known as a scrub mint in the Conradina genus. This particular variety gets between 2 and 3 feet tall and as wide as you will let it. I've had this plant for about three years now and have never had any problems with it as long as you don't count the fact that when it is in bloom it is constantly covered in bees. Even though I walk past this plant and brush against it while it's in bloom none of the bees have paid me a bit of attention. I believe that there are 4 different varieties of Conradina native to florida, two of which are endemic and endangered and a third is endemic and threatened. My plant is probably the fourth variety, Conradina canescens, but I'm not positive. As the first picture shows the plant is slowly trying to swallow up both my plumbago and my bleeding hear vine. The trash can in the background gives you an idea of the plants size. This is a plant that loves full sun but will tolerate some light shade (mines under a moderately large multi-trunked crape myrtle) and needs plenty of room to grow! Yes, my swamp sunflowers are Helianthus angustifolia. They do spread but so far I haven't had an issue with them, when they started migrating beyond the area I wanted them in I just just off the babies with a shovel and pulled them out. The native monarda is Monarda punctata and does have the lavender and white flower bracts. One native plant I forgot to mention that makes a great background plant is the Sparkleberry (Vaccinium arboreum). It's north america's largest member of the blueberry family although the fruit doesn't taste all that good. Here is a link that might be useful: Sparkleberry

Hi Everyone ! Still breathing in Philadelphia, but busy as ever. Who knew owning a home was such work .............. Kidding ! I'm sure some of you shook your head, but in all seriousness, I'm slowly piecing together a proper update. Hopefully soon, but I hate breaking promises, so I won't make one. My garden is a sea of yellow, yellow isn't even a color I'm very fond of. My Michaelmas Daisy bed which is full of my favorite colors, blue, lavender, pink, rose, purple, white, and wine's has plunked right in the middle a solitary clump of Solidaster lutea. I'm beginning to suspect I might have a split personality. LOL

I do have a couple more columbine blooming
One is yellow and lavendar the other is a deep red/white. OH then in the little garden there are some pink columbine, that are a perfect match to the bleeding hearts they are next too. OH I almost forgot about the orange lilies up next to the house.

But the Purples are by far the largest bloomers right now.

Those lilies need to me moved.......maybe I should put them next to the Irises the purple/orange combination might be pretty!

I have always loved shades of purple. My new beds in front are blue, purple and pink. I have lavender, pink knockout shrubs, lupines, russian sage, jacob's ladder, pink coneflowers, and I'm growing others from seed - like shasta daisies, foxglove, and annual forget-me-nots. The window boxes have pink petunias, dusty millers, and white allysum. Another container has pink verbena, blue lobellia and this white flower that I don't know the name of...lol.

So I say if you're drawn to it, go for it! :)

Another purple/mauve/rose/pink lover, here. I am definitely drawn to those colors. In fact, I've never seen a pink rose that I haven't fallen in love with! Right now on my desk is a bouquet of pink roses and purple/mauve/white Sweet Peas. :-)

A couple years ago someone suggested adding touches of yellow and what a difference it has made. Like a jolt of sunshine. The warm colors really play off of the cool tones, and both are enhanced.

Last year it was white and purple. This year I'm drawn to yellow and still white. I'm also a sucker for blue but a true blue is hard to find.

I too use a ton of purple....and love it...so if it is an addiction..then I am addicted with you! :) This year tho I have more pink mixed with it than ever and rather like the change.

Oh yes, I'm drawn to certain colors so much that I actually had color-themed beds! It helped restrict me a bit in what new plants I could grow, but I always found room to squeeze them in somewhere.

When I began my garden, it was all freebie/great deal/donated plants and I realized it was all yellow - I can't stand yellow!
So I made an effort to get more pink and purple, I now I realized it is all blooming purple LOL I still like it better than the all yellow though, and actually have come to appreciate a few spots of yellow among the pink and purple

I can relate! I have lots of purple, but I love it so the more the merrier to me. : )

I love blue, too, and I am on a quest to find as many blue flowering plants as I can. I recently found one called Australian bluebell, which is an annual for me so I'll probably grow it in containers that I can bring inside for winter protection. Love the little blue "bells" - it reminds me of the lovely pics some of you have shared of your Virginia bluebells.

And I so agree on the yellow (which I LOVE!) adding spark to the garden. Whites and yellows are what I call wake up colors. If you think your beds are a bit ho hum just add a few plants in these colors and see what happens. Can you say HELLO! : )

There's a gorgeous photo in the book 'The Exotic Garden' by Richard Iversen, of purple flowered plants with Dusty Miller. It looks as if there's artemesia, too. The scene is at Longwood Gardens.
