Container or in-ground?

I have read that fig trees produce more fruit when they're in a container. Is this true?

In my climate there is no need to bring the figs indoors in the winter so they don't actually *need* to be in a container.

You are blessed to live in a climate where you can leave your fig trees outside. It is true that one can be very successful growing figs in containers, but it takes a lot more work and is more expensive.

Plant your tree in the ground and enjoy. If you want to put one in a large container to compare, then by all means do so. But I think you will find that in ground is better in most respects.

Rob23b has given you some good advice, and either way, growing figs is very easy once you get into a routine.

One caveat for you to consider if you are going to plant your fig-tree in the ground...watch out for "root-knot nematodes" which can be a problem down south.

If you decide to grow fig trees in containers, you will use a clean, organism free, growing medium, and eliminate this potential problem. Containerized trees require more attention to watering, fertilizing, etc...but, it's no big deal. I have been growing my fig trees in containers since 2007, and I think it's a great method. I use 18-20 gallon plastic tubs that I buy at Home Depot, drill holes for drainage, and put containers with the planted trees on a dolly, so the whole shebang can be rolled around easily. My trees give me dozens of ripe figs each year. Cut to the chase and get yourself a fruiting-size tree and harvest ripe figs this season.

Unless you're out to challenge yourself by seeing how well you're able to deal with significant adversity, I'd skip the "garden" soil, which is often black sand with a small organic component added. How water behaves in container media is markedly different than how it behaves in the earth, and understanding how to deal with how water behaves is probably the most important part of becoming proficient as a container gardener. An ample amount of air is as important in soils as an ample amount of water. Too much water and the plant won't have enough oxygen to carry on efficient root function. If particles are too small, as in the garden soil, they will pack together with no room for air, and hold too much water. Finding the balance is where you fund success. New to bulbs- containers and in ground- any help is appreciated

Hi Sckubicka :) I'm not one of the bulb experts, mostly lurking forums. I'm pretty sure it is ideal to plant fall bulbs early fall. That gives new bulbs enough time to grow roots and be better prepared for the following year. I've read as long as the ground is workable you can wait until winter...but I think that is for the hardier bulbs. I'm completely clueless about the container growing. What kinds did you get? This is my first year with bulbs as well. Can't wait till spring :)

You're having a hard time getting a definitive answer because there isn't one. The need for a larger container is progressive and depends on your skills at and dedication to pruning roots and the above-ground portion of the plant. A #3-size plant, left to its own devices, would quickly outgrow a 5 gallon container, after only a year or two, but a #3-size plant properly cared for and properly pruned might be productive in a 5 gallon container for many years. The soil you use also plays into the equation. You can't just plop a #3 plant in 10 gallons of heavy soil and expect it to grow robustly. You could, however, plop a #3 plant in 10 gallons of a well-aerated soil and it will thrive, if you meet its other cultural requirements. You would also need to describe the present size of the plant material. If they are liners, a half gallon container might be appropriate for this growing season, but if they are in 5 gallon nursery pots, you might be able to leave them in that container if they were recently bumped up in size or if they have tight roots you'll need to bump them up yourself. Like it or not, the easiest ground cover to take care of is lawn grass. Not sure I'd agree with that statement :-) There are LOTS of different groundcovers or ground-hugging plants that offer low maintenance as well as weed suppression and that are far less trouble than turf grasses. And you certainly do not want grass growing up into the base of any clems - it is overly competitive with regards to soil moisture and nutrients, not to mention a PITA when growing into planting beds. I'd look into plants like aubretia, creeping phlox, cerastium, hardy geraniums. etc. Anything low and spreading will help to suppress weeds and conserve soil moisture. And there is always mulch to fill in areas where no plants are.
