A few pics from June 1-2

Hi cottage gardeners,

I was out all day today and yesterday yanking out paludosum daisies and moving irises, and I took some photos of the parts of the yard that don't look like large dogs dug them up. If you have some time to waste, take a look. The post is on the CA forum, and here's the link.

Gorgeous and inspiring!

What variety of agave are you growing? I like how you've integrated it into the garden.

The obelisk is a great accent piece. Everything looks lovely.

Thanks :))) Karen, Some color combos for yellow: ...with shades of purples and blues, shades of red/orange white, and greens. Mixing the reds and oranges with yellow is going to be more "hot" while sticking with more blues and purples will give a more "cool" or tranquil effect and white ties everything together. A few years ago I wanted to add a punch of red here and there because I had SO much yellow with purple and blue and now this year with all the volunteer red poppies and maltese cross (and even their volunteers) I'm VERY thankful to have all the white LOL! Don't forget anything with big or dark green foliage works too for different texture against fine foliage like yarrow. That is something I'm always lacking here because everything I have is usually fine textured and in the silver or blue/green catagory...like lavender, hyssopus, golden marguerite, yarrow, ect. Usually these are the most tolerant of drought and heat so I tend to go for these the most ((sigh))

Vera, your gardens are always a welcome sight. The only planted pot I didn't empty out last Fall had Nicotiana sanderae in it with Zinnia. I've got lots of little selfsown Nicotiana seedlings sitting in that pot to be transferred around. They're the lime green flowers. After looking at the alata I think they'd be more impressive blooms. No fragrance on sanderae and shield bugs constantly sit right in center of flowers. At least critters don't eat those plants so they're worth some space. I know it's backbreaking work to get out all those rocks but I'd have to buy them for garden borders here...and I do want a rock garden somewhere, sometime. The only thing in the dirt here at my father's is gravel. When the shovel hits something solid with a "clink" it's either more gravel or Chinese Wisteria runners the diameter of the shovel handle. Vera, I'm still waiting on my first set of true leaves on my snapdragon 'Black Prince' sprouts. I sowed them pretty late though. I also sowed 'Rembrandt' that I bought from Valueseeds, and they have been in the ground for over a month, and are about as big as your third year snaps. I'll have to make a note about the 'Green Goliath' broccoli. Last year, I ripped out my broccoli in mid-July when it still hadn't even started to form a head. This year, I'm trying two kinds, Di Ciccio and Calabrese. They're still pretty small, so not sure if I'll get any this year either. This is the coolest, wettest June we've had since I moved here, which my lettuce is loving! They're the size of small shrubs, LOL. Thanks for sharing your pictures! Bonnie

I'm glad you got to see it bloom this year. It really is hard to wait! Mine just got done with a few reblooms. I know it isn't listed as a rebloomer,but when there is a month of nothing,then more scapes,I say rebloom.

I like the agave. Unfortunately, they have to be overwintered inside here; and the tips are deadly. Also like the background larkspur.

Your garden is lovely and looking at the pictures are a wonderful use of time.

mantis, I believe that High Country Gardens has several agave that are hardy to zone 5, if you are interested.

Thank you, fellow gardeners. Lois, the white flowers are Giant Imperial Larkspur from seed. Cameron, I don't know what kind of agave it is- it was tiny when I set it there in its pot. It has become a hazard and will have to be torn out this year. It's just too big for the spot. I don't look forward to the chore, that's for sure. Does anyone know how to make tequila?

Lovely photos! I like your obelisk too and believe I recognize it from a photo I saw somewhere else on the web. Do you have "Lady Friend" irises planted near it (but not in bloom in this photo)? If so, one of your photos is what inspired me to get "Lady Friend." Thanks!
