In the garden next to some chartreuse ladys mantel, in a pot with applebloosm petunias or a light dusky pink mini rose, in front of dark fushshia or dark red snap dragons, next to the lime green tradicancia which gets great purple flowers, in a pot with any osteospermum yellow or purple... lol hmm mine died I might have to get some more now lol

I'm fascinated by Black Mondo Grass, but they want such outrageous prices for it here ($12-$20 for a 4 inch pot, depending on the nursery) that I've always had to pass. Maybe one day...Now where did I put that lottery ticket?

Totally Confused

I brought some into the store this past spring. A 2.5 quart container was $8.98. I found that if you leave them sitting on the tables surrounded by green things, they got lost. So I placed them between two variegated grasses of about the same size and they popped. People snapped them up. I don't grow them in the garden here. I think it's hard to make them show up unless you use light colored mulch or pair them with bright foliage plants.

I have mine in a pot with sedum ogon, a very bright lime green sedum with very tiny round leaves. It really pops. I also combined it in another pot with the bright lime green japanese forest grass. Both are awesome.

Mine is in a mix of different colored carex and some ladies mantle along the front edge of a small pool.

I would love to have them next to my coral bells, prunelas, hostas, thrifts... However if they aren't perennials I can't use them. I need a garden that regenerate itself without much management.

Last year I bought two large pots of the Black Mondo grass at an end of season sale for $4 each. I knew they were annuals here, but thought I would just enjoy them for a short time. Just before a hard frost, I sunk the pots in the ground and mulched them. They never even died back. They stayed black and fresh looking through snow and sub-zero temps - and I am in zone 4a (northern WI). I am going to try and plant them in a sheltered area and mulch heavily and see if they make it through another winter. Maybe I will mulch and cover them with rose cones.
