Visit to Broken Arrow Nursery

I went to Broken Arrow Nursery in CT today just to look around and see some cool large specimens and potential future purchases. I left my credit cards at home as I feared I would fill my wagon and end up with a big house all to myself if you know what I mean... They had some impressive specimens. I am sure somebody has put a pic of this amazing weeping larch tree but I had to post some pic - simply amazing. I spoke to the gentleman who grafted the tree in 1960!!!! He has trained the tree over the last 50 plus years! Work of art! They have been offered obscene amounts of money for the tree according to one of the younger workers.

Of course that is true. However if quality plants continue to originate from a seller, then it is beneficial for everyone to know about it. And if a sellers plants are consistently superior, then they obviously are not following the "standard" with whatever they might be doing. A well known online merchants that so many people rave about, actually have no better than average plants at best, in my experience. They just seem better at making excuses and getting people to believe them than most. That and ridiculous shipping that covers cost of the occasional replacement for those not so easily persuaded. They once contacted me to say a rare item - the obviously most rare one in my order - was not available, and offered to cancel the whole order. A lot of places will just ship the order with the one item you really wanted missing! I have also met them at a local plant sale, including Adam I think. I enjoyed talking to him. They seem like a class act.

I went there last year and was very impressed ... All the shrubs/trees I purchased last spring from Broken Arrow are doing wonderfully : Salix integra 'Hakuro nishiki' Viburnum x burkwoodii 'Mohawk' Cornus alba 'Elegantissima' Cercis chinensis 'Don Egolf' Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Baby Blue' The staff was very helpful, the selection large, and the prices were reasonable, I felt. It was also an enjoyable place to browse. I hope to go back again.

We went to Broken Arrow about 3 weeks ago. I bought a 'Minuet' Mt. Laurel and a Corunu Alba 'Bailhalo' Ivory Halo. Well, they weren't cheap, that's for sure, but I really wanted them for a long time. Yes, the staff there is very helpful, but I'm a new customer and can't compare it to previous years. Then this week I went to VanWilgen's in N. Branford and their prices were higher than last season. I'm guessing that the cost of fuel, transportation of products, etc. has caused a jump in everyone's pricing all around. I think I'll have to balance the plant I want/its quality vs. the cost. For example, would I find those two plants in HD or Lowe's... probably not. So I figure that I splurge on one end and am conservative on the other. I'll probably plant fewer annuals than in past years, unless I find bargains. I love hearing about other people's finds! Molie

It was a good move not bringing the credit card - would have easily spent a few thousand there! Amazing selection for the tri state area. There are a few nurseries in new Jersey that I have been to that have more varieties but there are definitely some really hard to find varieties at Broken Arrow.

Wow, awesome pics... smart move, leaving the cc's at home! I will probably bring just enough cash to get the trees I want when I head down this fall too...it's like having a gambling problem going to a casino. I swear, I showed up here 4 years ago, just looking for a "fast growing evergreen privacy screen" and ended up becoming a conifer addict.

Which nurseries in NJ did you visit that had more variety?

Nice pics.Thanks for posting.Yes it is an addiction lol but you have much more to show for it at the end of the day.Alcohol,gambling....money to the wind.Conifers.....coming home to your own private park,exercise,relaxing in beauty.I think everyone on this forum picked the right addiction...bit I could be biased lol

Definitely a healthy addiction in my opinion. The nurseries that I went to in Jersey were huge! Brock Farms Nursery in Freehold. They have over 700 acres at there various locations. I t was like a never ending nursery when I visited a few weeks ago. Crawford Brothers nursery in Freehold also had a huge selection but not as many hard to find varieties.

I made the trip down to Broken Arrow today. I picked up Cryptomeria japonica 'Knaptonensis' & Acer palmatum 'Red Dragon'. I also saw some conifers that I have not seen before in person, some of which were very impressive. I did however leave a little annoyed because one of the workers told me I was welcome to check out their new graft section. I found a Sciadopitys verticillata 'Gold Star' which I was absolutely stunned by... This cultivar was one of the nicest gold conifers I have ever seen...I was soo excited to buy it, only to be told at the registered that it was not for sale!! Damm.. I didn't get any pictures either, because I thought I was about to own it.

Acer palmatum 'Bihou' - WoW! The color on the Japanese Maple was stunning. As an added bonus, the bark turns bright yellow in fall/winter

Pinus flexilis 'Cesarini Blue' - Bluest (only true blue) Pine I have ever seen in person. Most have a hint of blue, this one is BLUE...

Cephalotaxus harringtonia 'Korean Gold'- Nice gold. Cephalotaxus is generally is an under used conifer. It is very unique and interesting and can handle very heavy shade and deer hate it.

Metasequoia glyptostroboides 'North Light' - This conifer, with it's soft foliage simply stops people in their tracks...not only that, but it's a Redwood that will fit nicely into most smaller gardens!

Cornus kousa - 'Snow Boy' - Not a conifer, but nice for those shady spots you can't grow most conifers. White color and bark pattern were very interesting.

Yes, their mail order starts in September. They don't offer everything, its limited. So check out conifer kingdom if you don't see it there.

Dawn Redwood is supposed to be good through zone 8. Looks like SC is z8 or less so it should do ok.
