Kenny, I've read (now) your question about rooting of cuttings of figs. Of course if there are important meanings in cultivate American-cuttings-come-from-Europe-and-in-Europe-to-be-returned (or for other sentimental) this is perfect. Take into account however that in Italy there are almost hundred different varieties of figs. Of course there are some problem about parthenocarpic or needing-pollen, but one cultivator of figs (in Berlin), has no problem about this type of smallness. For Eukofios, unfortunately in south of Germany there is no possibility about figs, in fact this territory is the north side of the Alpes ridge, cold and subject to north wind. The south ridge (in Italy) a lot more warm is also too cold, except along the main lakes, quite big and deep, around the lakes there are small climatic "islands" where in particular protected site also lemon and orange may grow, and also figs. Normally (very slowly) figs become to be in more presents in more quantity going to the south, but every in naturally protected sites. Only on the sea cost (overall in west side coast) figs become very frequent and also wild. bye, s

my experience is different so I'll write it here. I root woody tropicals in a passive(just a bucket of water) system. I ahve a bubbler and an aquarium heater. I was having no luck getting them to put out roots until I bought the heater and set it to 85F. This flies in the face of everything you hear about water temperature. I have a systemic fungicide to ward off pythium. I would like to learn to lower the pH safely to keep fungus away. So far I have had excellent luck rooting cuttings that had been stressed by fungus attack. This is much more challenging than rooting fresh cuttings. Those are easy. Those of us who grow this certain tropical are having luck with very high heat. It speeds the metabolism. When I first started, everyone said keep the water out of the sun. Well, I did but the water never got very warm and I had mixed results. Now with very warm water, I am having excellent results. Of course, it is not the same as growing lettuce so I can't speak for that. They are also under T8 fluoros. Scott

Taki, generally speaking, water from the roots to shoots move only in one direction through xylem. Imagine a cutting with roots in the middle. Photosynthate from leaves can move in either direction through phloem. You may see shoots try to develop on either side but only the side that faces the right direction for the cutting will actually have a chance of survival. The other side would not. So it is unlikely it will autocorrect itself. Apparently, some and very few plants can correct themselves. Usually vining plants can do it apparently.
