Mr Lincoln

It's a hybrid tea, but it's doing great this year. HUGE blooms. The plant is one year old and is filling in nicely. I'd like advice to make it fuller. Should I prune after this flush? If so, how?

The plant is about 4' tall. I know more canes will cause smaller blooms, but I'd like to increase the overall number.

I hope you get an answer about pruning it.
I do know that pruning roses in early spring does encourage more blooms, but not sure about doing that after it has started blooming. Prolly so - more new branches, more blooms, since roses bloom on new growth.

Your Mister Lincoln is gorgeous. Mine isn't blooming yet. Love the strawberries around it. I see you grow garlic in with your roses. Me too. Roses love garlic. They love Parsley too. I grow Italian Flat-leaf Parsley around my roses in the big rose garden.

Your pole beans look great. I built and set up my pole-tepees yesterday and will plant the seeds soon.

Beautiful rose pictures. I love their fragrance.

It looks lovely. I doubt you will get it to look fuller, it is a Hydrid tea and that is how they grow. Plus the growth habit of Mr Lincoln in particular is tall and skinny.

I've grown Mister Lincoln on and off for many years, and more often than not it takes on magenta/bluish shades. Those of you that posted magenta pink pics of Mister Lincoln...In my opinion, you definitely have the right variety, sometimes that's just how it looks. It's the marketing for 50+ years that's always described Mister Lincoln as the quintessential red, in truth it's not always that red. Back in the late 60s when it was introduced, I think it was rightly considered very red. But the standard is higher now, with the introduction of roses like Olympiad and Veterans Honor, which are a far purer, true red. Mister Lincoln also opens too fast and doesn't last as long as those newer reds. It is still probably the best of the old 'reds' , a strong grower with very good fragrance. I think Firefighter is the best compromise between old and new reds...it is quite red, still very fragrant, and very generous in bloom.

Spectrograph, the basals will come with time. You can help by feeding the soil (as Ann said) and adding alfalfa (you can find alfalfa meal or pellets in feed stores). Also, I have found that having direct sunlight on the base of roses spurs basal growth. When a cane is finished blooming don't just cut it back to the next leaf set. The new cane will be at least 2-3 feet, so cut back the base to how tall you want it including the new growth. Mr. Lincoln is a tall lanky rose, so you may want to plant something in front of it, maybe even a smaller rose. And it does need to be sprayed.

It hasn't produced any new basal canes this year (which it normally gives me huge canes). I've only been watering 1 to 2 times a week, the ground is still slightly wet from rain that we got a while back. It's been about 3 weeks since I've given any fertilizer. As for weather it's been sunny an slightly cool (maybe 65-75 deg/slightly inland san diego).

Thanks pink rose! Mine is also fairly narrow compared to its height. I may cut it back this spring to encourage branching. I like tall roses in my yard because the chickens can't get to the flowers as much. Mostly they like lavender flowers but sometimes take a bite out of other colors lol. I am happy to hear it is blackspot resistant. That is my main problem other than graft failure due to being too wet. Do your fortuniana grafted roses hold up better? Some of the roses I have on Doc Huey, get graft issues due to the rain, constant humidity etc. despite me keeping the mulch off the trunk, planting the graft higher off the soil, and hose water off the graft. I only have a few roses on fort and they don't have issues yet. ~Sjn

Your in NC and anywhere on the east coast any HT is gonna blackspot without spraying. What concerns me are the strawberries growing around it. I would not want to spray any of the rose desease preventatives that I can think of on anything edible.

Rita, I don't spray. If I get blackspot, I pull those leaves off and discard them. If it has to be pruned to the ground, so be it. I just don't bother spraying. So far, everything still looks great. I know in a couple months that will change with heat and humidity increasing. But for now, they're gorgeous.

Ok, everyone has their own way of doing things and that includes growing roses. I was just concerned about edibles. Actually the strawberries look great around the rose :-))
