I am so excited! My peony bloomed today, first time

I was taking pictures of the roses and checking out the foxglove that is beginning to bloom when I realized the three of the buds had opened on the white peony! It didn't bloom last year, so I am doing the happy dance!

The roses are pretty too, the flush is really beginning to show and the fragrance is so nice! This is the only time of year i can count on the fragrance wafting out when I get anywhere near the roses.

Compassion is so pretty, and smells so good , and has wicked thorns.

And William Shakespear 2000 is cutting up...he's covered with buds and many blooms and he's reaching for duchess de brabant who appears to be dropping her petals in horror:)

DH loves the bright red of WS 2000, thinks all roses should be red. Not a gardener.

Oh, my, gorgeous pictures! My DH is the same, thinks they should all be red, so this year I bought Oklahoma, Firefighter and Francis Debreuil to keep him happy with my addiction....

It is still in full bloom after all this time! I never saw blooms last so long. I am not sure how old it is, but at least more than 6 years old. I am horrible with dates at the moment. I have heard of some blooming theirs as just cuttings:-) Catevala..WOW. Now that is one happy plant. It's beautiful. Xuan! What a cutie is right! Was Santa good to him? What a cute kid! Hi Nancy, I've posted about using Strep. 'Mighty Mouse' in crosses many times, so one more time won't hurt. It is often thought of as being sterile because the pods, when they mature look to be empty. But, there are often a few fertile seeds in the pod, and it only takes one to germinate and grow on to get something special. When a strep pod matures we expect to see lots of dust like seeds. So, when this one matures, the few seeds are barely noticable. I have only used 'Mighty Mouse' one time and that was over 20 years ago, but I got two plants from that one cross. The pollen parent was a species, gardenii. Anyway, your pod looks good. Grow it to term and when it starts to crack, carefully open it over some white paper to catch the tiny seeds. Hopefully you have good eyesight or a good magnifying glass to see the seeds. Plant them right away in a sterile mix and hopefully your first attempt will be successful. If not, don't dispair and keep trying. It is not difficult to make strep crosses and there is a lot of value in making mini crosses--most of potential here hasn't yet been seen. I learned about this plant as a hybrid parent from the creator of the cross who also was the first to make crosses with it. He said it would make 7 seeds, on average. His first seedlings from crosses with MM proved to be much more fertile, and subsequent generations led to the first mini streps, which really were more like compact streps as they could still get fairly large. He didn't name any of his crosses as he felt that each new generation made better hybrids than the previous. This was too bad as there are none of these early crosses still being grown. But, they were used by others to make the compact types that we see today. Of the hybrids that came from MM, but from a number of generations later, the best known is Jonathan Ford's 'Joker', a red hybrid. Dale Marten's 'Texas Hot Chili, a cross with kentaniensis, has MM in its background. The hybridizer of MM gave up on gesneriad hybridizing within a few years of making this cross, so much of the potential was never realized. Since it was made, dozens of heretofore never cultivated species were brought into cultivation, some of which grow fairly small. We have a much more diverse gene pool to work with today, so there is lots of potential. MM is a cross of a seedling of the 'Cape Beauties' strain x johannis (white flower form). Jon

Ok, time for updates! I'm not having too great of luck with this! I was amazed and excited when the above batch calloused so easily on the first try. I potted them up in clear cups with regular potting soil and put them in a greenhouse tray with a tall clear dome over it. Left the tray on my back porch. One by one they turned black and died. I'm pretty sure I know why tho. They were fairly long cuttings and I didn't stick them down all the way in the cups, and a couple of them were too tall for even the taller dome I used. So, the dome was not sitting flush over the tray. There was about 2" of air space, so I think the cold air got in and dried the stems out. I didn't mist them either. I did the second batch of florist rose cuttings and after the 2 week wait, they had not calloused, but were mostly still green. I cut off the black ends and potted these up into a special indoor potting medium we sell at Ace that's used by pot growers. Mostly peat moss, perlite and lime I believe, with the mycorhizzae also. I only kept the cuttings that had swollen budeyes. I put them in the greenhouse tray and added a layer of clay pebbles soaked in water. Made sure the clear dome was flush over the tray. I got a 2-light fluorescent light fixture and put 40w full spectrum lights in, and put a heating pad under the tray. I set the light timer to come on around 4:00pm and go off about 1:00am. Then I put a chunk of my shade cloth over the whole table and light set-up to cut down on the brightness of the light at night (it lights up most of my backyard) and to also maybe add a little warmth. So far, after a week or more, the cuttings are staying green and budeyes are still swollen. No need to mist, as the wet clay pebbles and the heating pad create a nice moist atmosphere under the dome. I also buried the stems all the way into the cups. I did have one stem last week that got a bit of mold on the tip above the top budeye, and I snipped it off. So far, so good. Now today I upwrapped another batch a day early, and was very disappointed. There were several stems that turned black, and almost every one had turned black at the base. The rest of the stems were green with swollen budeyes, so I decided to go ahead and pot them up like I did the previous batch. Now with this batch, I'm kinda thinkin' I might not've gotten all the excess water out of the newpaper, and it was a bit lesser quality newspaper also. Not that that might make a difference, but who knows? I'm also thinking maybe when I diluted the Dip'n'grow, I might not've dilute it as much as I should have. I mean there's just so many different factors and variables to consider. I'm just hoping that these cuttings will root anyway in the potting medium and the greenhouse trays. I still have about 4 more batches of florist roses all rolled up, waiting for the 2 week period. We'll see what happens with those. I'm gonna keep trying, that's for sure. Eventually something will work!

That's great news. I am happy for you especially since your son is military. No matter how any of us feel about the war, we appreciate our military people. We spent many holidays alone. Because of the parents and step parents issue, I decided what ever day my children could be with us was "the" holiday. The Christmas my oldest granddaughter was four, they were stationed in Abeline. We lived in San Antonio and my son's father lived in Kingsvile and my DIL's mother lived in Robstown. The kids had their Christmas at home and then drove to SA. The next day we had our Christmas. The day after they drove to Robstown and had Christmans at my DIL's mother's house. They went to my ex's on Christmas morning and had Christmas. Soooooo,my granddaughter got up the day after Christmas expecting it all to happen again. She was a tad disappointed.

ogrose, I think it is funny that he is so serious about it. The hedge of Knockouts (minus the one the voles got) is hot pink. He was complaining (whining) that I should have gotten red Knockouts instead. I told him the red would not go with the iris bed in front, but he was not convinced, in fact was miffed that I said that.

The roses are just opening in these pics. That red flag in the picture clashes with the iris, and red roses would too, I suspect. And the other side of the bed is iris in dark purple shades.

I agree with sandi, the pink looks great with the Iris. Love the dark purple, I made my first foray into the more modern iris, got a dark purple from Blue J last fall, among others, and love it!

You're doing a beautiful job.

How pretty everything is. I have never seen a peony.
Guess DH is out numbered. I am not fond of red flowers. About the only red I will have is the amaryllis.

I do love that Lilac rose. Awwww...that was so thoughtful of you to think of me!

Your garden is full of color and vitality. Mine is just sitting there...on hold. Everything in your garden looks healthy and so pretty! I bet with all those beautiful roses and irises blooming, your garden smells delicious. I only wish irises could have a longer blooming period. I can sit out in the garden and sniff and sniff and sniff their yummy scent for hours.
I love red roses, too, and I must say. WS 2000 is AWESOME! (swooning..)

I actually like red and purple together, especially with yellow gold. Very regal colors.
I like deep red with bold, bright yellows, white, purples, blues, turquoise, oranges and some shades of pink, HOT Tropical colours, with Caribbean blues, but never with demure Pastels.
It just depends upon the shades and the hues of red.. I do NOT like pinky-washed-out-reds. If it is going to be red, I want my roses to bloody well be a true red, a Christmas red, a juicy apple red, or a cherry red, or a deep crimson red...or it's Off with their heads! Off with their Heads!

Annie, I remembered your saying you really wanted Lilac Dawn at one time. Maybe it will behave and grow nicely and you can get a cutting from it.

Thanks Mantis, I think it has a lovely form. Yes, the peony is Festiva Maxima, and the other three buds will open if this repeat mini winter is ever over. I had one bloom on Flame earlier this year. Sarah Bernhardt bloomed last year, but nor this year, and i think I need to move it this fall due to insufficient sun.

Well now I know the name of my white peonies!
I got a start of it years ago from my mother. She didn't know what its name was either. But now I do! Thanks Mantis and Kay. Your conversation helped me too. Awesome.

My peonies are budded and getting ready to bloom. I have a few others with no names. All are passalongs and bloom, except the red one that I bought. I've had it about five years and it has never bloomed. Bummer.

Going right now to make name markers for my Festiva Maxima before I forget..

How lovely seeing roses and peonies blooming! I am excited cuz I just bout a yellow tree peony at a community plant sale and it also looks like a few other peonies was given(unknown color to me) will be blooming soon! Plus I have another peony that I bought at a different fundraiser plant sale that blooms it's little red heart out!! It is so vigorous that I have split it up 2x now and it never stops blooming, will bloom every year!! Yet I have a stubborn one that has done nothing in over 5 yrs!? I am transplanting the tree peony today into a bigger pot and it will live on my deck this year. It was on my "Must Have List" this year!

Loved getting to peek into your garden and seeing all your gorgeous flowers, I have several peonies pinks and whites and one stubborn red 'Sam Donaldson' it has never bloomed, one more year and it's going to be history.
I especially love your 'Compassion' if I had more room I'd be looking for that one.

Thanks, Annette. I have some peonies to move this fall since they have wound up being in too much shade. It is one of the plants my mother had great success growing, and so here is a sentimental aspect to growing peonies.

Compassion is a beautiful rose. It is a climber and pretty big, lovely scent, and pretty big thorns. I love it.
