I have planted one this year (a very small one), and so far not much to report. It is alive - which is good, bot not really growing yet. I wonder if this is normal - was purchased in a flower bulb department as a root with some greenery. I planted it about a month ago.

Woodyoak, my tree peonies were doing great! Then we had a long night and day of rain followed by 85 degree heat. Now they look like wet, limp tissue paper. I have about 4 that haven't bloomed yet so I'm still looking forward to those! I adore tree peonies and hope to purchase some of the intersectionals next year. Yours is beautiful! Do you happen to know the name, or was it just labeled "red" when you bought it?

Natalie - I'm embarrassed to admit I don't know re fragrance! I'll go sniff it this morning... :-)

Thyme - I really like that soft pink one! I think mine had a name but I've lost the tag. I bought it though because the color was 'right'. It is one that clearly is grafted onto herbaceous peony roots - because a delicate single pink peony came up around it. The tree peony didn't do much for a couple of years after planting but the single peony was compensation. In fact, I had come to the conclusion that I wouldn't mind at all if the tree peony died and the single herbaceous peony took over... After the tree peony hit its stride the herbaceous one seems to have faded away.

Natalie - the morning sniff test results - yes, scented but not as strong/nice as herbaceous peonies IMO...

I love peonies too! thank you for posting the picture. I did buy a Sarah Bernhard and it is looking okay so far. We'll see. But I love to see pictures.

Everyone's pictures are gorgeous! Even thought they bloom for such a short period of time - they are so worth it.
The peony I bought said "Red tree peony" on the label. I go outside every day to see if it is growing and alive :). So far it is just alive, and I am grateful for that.

Natalie, congratulations on your tree peony! When you get a bloom on it you might be bitten by the bug and need to buy more!!

Woodyoak, very interesting about the herbaceous coming up from the rootstock. I have the same thing happening to one of mine. I've been debating for a couple years (the TP is not that vigorous) if I should dig it up and figure out how to get rid of the herbaceous piece coming up. I was just out there after work and I see the herbaceous shoot is going to bloom! Now I'm curious to see what color it will be. Maybe based on what you said I'll wait a couple more years to see if the TP finally takes over. Thanks for sharing that info.

thyme - let us know what the herbaceous bud turns into. I'll have to go look at mine again - I don't remember seeing it the last couple of years, but it was one of the things that spurred an interest in single peonies. I have three that will be blossoming for the first time this year so I'm anxiously awaiting the opening of the buds.

Three single peonies are going to bloom this year? Which ones did you get? I really like the singles because they don't require any staking. I'd like to add more singles. Love to see pics when they bloom!!

thyme - The singles are 'Miss Mary'- a deep red, 'Auntie Shirley'- a pale pink, and a white one that I don't have the name of. I just added a 'Crinkled White' but I'm not sure if it will survive - not the best time of year to plant it and the root looked weak. It's not easy to find single ones. I'm going to make an effort to find more this fall. I'm hoping RBG (Royal Botanical Gardens) will have some at their fall sale because they have a good collection of them.

Sunnydays, what zone are you in? Your tree peonies are growing so tall! WOW! I rememeber seeing your picture on the perennials forum. Absolutely beautiful.

OK, so today I'm a little upset about tree peonies. I'm not the type of gardener to let a lot get me annoyed but I finally got a bloom on the tree peony that also has the herbaceous peony with it. It was definitley mislabeled because it's Kinkaku and I already have one of them. I don't remember which one it was supposed to be, but I know for sure at the very least the colors and a few of the names of the tree peonies I currently have. I would have never purchased another Kinkaku, especially when they're pricey plants i want a variety. Well, I guess I'll move it somewhere else. Maybe when I do that I can also get rid of the herbaceous part of it. This is the 3rd or 4th mis-labeled one I've gotten and 2 were duplicates of a color I already had. Oh well, there are worse things that can happen in gardening so I won't fret too much over this. It's just annoying with expensive plants that they would be mis-labeled. Thanks for letting me get that off my chest!!
