Xanthocyparis nootkatensis

What is the deal with this species? I own several c. leylandii ( nootkatensis x macrocarpa) and they thrive here, over 3' a year. I know that it must be the hybrid strenght what makes them heat tolerant, but why if both species come from the coastal area of the northern pacific. Does Xanthocyparis nootkatensis will withstand hot weather, what about its cultivar 'pendula'.

I think that they can take hot and humid, but not sure how they'd handle hot and dry. Saw em all along the East Coast, N.C., Maryland, etc. Maybe put a misting hose on them in the dry days of the s.w.?

Nootka native to some sites in hot and dry interior east of main range in Cascade mountains in both Oregon and Washington. Tall, impressive cultivated specimens also seen at farmhouses in interior, in midst of wheatfields and in other settings. Toughness of Leyland would be imparted primarily by this parent, and not by Monterery cypress which huddles in a tiny native range right on central California coast (where climate is neither hot nor cold).

any chance at a picture??? anyone who had more than a few conifers .. has broken a leader.. or knocked off the terminal bud ... dont bother beating yourself up too much ... it accomplishes nothing .... take the next small pendulous branch .. and tie it to the dying leader... to give it the idea to grow up ward ... loosely tied... it will be fine ... they are trees ... significant ability to overcome even the worst damage ... plant it ... nice big ring of mulch .. let it dry between waterings .. insert finger to 2nd knuckle to find out how your soil is handling water ... water only in drought next year ... free range thereafter ... next time.. just lay the whole thing down .... wont hurt it at all ... for a few days anyway ... good luck ken

Yesterday I found a new wonder at Mr. Liptai. A special Cedrus libani forest. Cedrus libani Nemrut Dagi Published 2010 Mesterhazy in Conifer Treasury of Hungary 1.1 Breeder/Found 1991 Liptai Istvan HUN at Lake Van TUR Introduced by the publisher Description Liptai Istvï¿½n collected seeds above the Lake Van in eastern Turkey on the slope of the Mount Nemrud in an area of one square kilometer (250 acres). The forest there lives in incredible circumstances with z4-5 frosts, big snow in winter, dry summers in a vaste rocky area mostly without any soil. The collected population was planted at an age of 3-4 years old in Tokaj, HUN with cca. 150 cedars, as a little forest far of his area. The Liptai Collection is on a wild south-eastern slope along the river Bodrog, where the cedars near to the river has grown a trunk of 40 centimeter (16 inch) in 16 years, 50 meters higher usually 25-30 cm (10-12 inch), and bringing quite good seeds yet. About 10 % ot the forest brings never powdering male cones, just female cones, a little more brings only male cones. Most of them seems to be usual with both kind of cones, as usual as we learned before. Cedrus libani ï¿½Nemrut Dagiï¿½ seems to be an imported genetic wonder, and this unique little forest will be the fathers and mothers of the z4 cedars in the frosty boreal regions of the world. Could have a nice future in reforesting semideserts or even boreal taigas. Grows to unexpected measures in milder climate, needs unusual very much place. (20 meters in diameter!) Majestic soliters to great parks, but no more than 2 or 3. Ideal understock for other cedars planted in less than z6. A gift of Gods, his name comes from the ancient King Nemrud, the famous scythian ruler. Royal names to royal cedars. "Resin, what condtions are these and what maximum and minimum temperatures are there?" There's climate data for Vladivostock here (scroll down to 'Geography'). Knock a few degrees off and increase precipitation a bit, for the higher altitudes (800-1200 m) that Microbiota grows at. Worth adding though that Microbiota will get reliable deep snow cover in winter, so it may be less capable of withstanding cold dry conditions than one might expect (and particularly so if grafted high up as a standard). ok, so if leyland tolerates high and dry temps,u thint nootka will like it too, or is something related to the hybrid vigour.....I really want to get one, specially a pendula but I want to make sure it will like it here. thank you bboy and erniew

'Sunset Western Garden Book' cites Nootka Cypress as zones 4-6, 15-17 - which in itself is it's own 'zonal rating system' for the western US.

As bboy has said previously regarding their zonal system - He said to the persuasion that (he) wouldn't put all the trust in the world on these editors.

Of course at the very least you could find out what Sunset Zone is and to go from there. Heck maybe even contacting Sunset themselves could be an option for you.

Sunset WESTERN GARDEN BOOK is definitely best source for climate zone suitabilities here. Really nothing else nearly as useful for this, USDA is just minimum temperature distribution patterns drawn up in a rather cartoonish way (out west, anyway) and AHS is just how hot it gets.

It seems no conifer likes Sunset zone 10, of course, with a few exceptions. However I always try to push my luck, meaning I will plant one this fall.......lol. I got a spot that it may like it.
