'The Fig' by Ira J. Condit (1947)

I bought a copy of "The Fig" about a year ago for $100. and from time to time I search on vaious sites for the book curious about availability and price.

I has been a long time since I have run across another copy but I found on last week and bought it for $125.

It arrived as advertised a very nice clean first edition signed by Mr. Condit himself in 1957. The book even has the orginal order blank with the book title checked and $5. indicated as the orginal price.

I guess I'm being a pig for buying a second copy of the hard to find book but I could not resist a signed copy.

My wife was a bit flustered with the purchase and then I asked which will be worth more in 10 years... the book or $125.? Then I got the usual eyes rolling responce.

figsin: Congratulations! I think you found a creampuff. I doubt that the $125 would ever make a real difference in your life, but I think the book already has.....Lou

Glenn, I think that the confusion is that Ficus Carica (e.g., BT, Celeste,) Ficus Afghanistanica are two different ficus species, or that what I used to think, now I am not sure! UCD does list the 'Afghan A' as of the carica kind with a narrative as a possible F.carica subspecies. Narrative: Probably Ficus carica ssp. Afghanistan. Twiggy growth and slow maturity. For more information, refer to Condit (see citation). Citations Reference: Ira J. Condit. 1947. The Fig. pg. 20-21. Part of Condit: The following names were once accorded specific rank but are now regarded as subspecies or as synonyms of Ficus carica. F. afghanistanica, F. nialvastrifolia, and F. vitifolia were all described by OTTO WARBUEG (1904), the first from Afghanistan, the others from Persia. Thanks for the link. In the "olden days" (mid-1980s) before all of this great info was available on the Internet, my search for anything about how to grow and identify figs led me to a fig enthusiast in Newnan, Georgia by the name of Paul Starnes. He had a copy of Condit's book and also had about 50 varieties in his back yard. We formed the "Friends of the Fig Society" and I started putting out "The Fig Leaflet" on my Zenith 100 computer. The total memory was on one floppy disk, so it often crashed with all my work in it. We soon had several hundred members in 40 states and several foreign countries. We had some good meetings with plant swaps, etc. Newbies today are very lucky to have the Fig Forum to guide them.

Hi everbody I have this book it is a hardcover book the ones on Amazon are soft cover.I dont think these are the real deal.

The softcover books available on Amazon are different from the "The Fig" by Ira Condit. They are "A Bibliography of the Fig" by Condit and his assistant Enderud from Hilgardia , an softcover agricultural periodical. It could be useful in tracking down old references to figs and might be of interest to a collector. However, "The Fig" would probably be of more interest to the average fig enthusiast. I would suggest reading the online edition first. If you find it interesting and your collecting urge extends to books as well as fig varieties, then consider buying the book.

have both, (plus a hard copy of 'The Fig'); can somebody
please refresh the source for the ONLINE 'Hilgardia' edition...

Would someone give me some advice on pruning a fig tree. I think it is a brown turkey tree. Very tall and scattered but it has a great tasting fig and plenty of them but you cannot get to the top to harvest them. It belongs to a neighbor who is not able to care for it. What kind of and how much fertilizer and water. I can provide a picture if necessary. I live in Glennville, Ga. and it is getting time for sap to start running. Thanks for your time. All help is appreciated. Need info ASAP.

Most likely needs neither water (except in dought conditions) or fertilizer (unless annual growth is under 1 foot).

If you prune too severely the crop will be delayed until too late in the season for maturing. One option is to cut back severely on one side this year, then the other side next year. In the following years, cut back all previous year's growth leaving only one to two nodes of growth on each branch from the previous year.
