You can usually find S/H at a Hydroponics place- I reckon Berkeley ought to be chock-a-block with those. The CHC (coconut husk chunks) I get by the bale from a local small operation grower. He also tends to have giant bags of several sizes of bark, piles of cork pieces, and various sponge rock and charcoal- I bring my own bucket and he just eyeballs me a price. It takes me a couple of years to go through a bale of CHC, but it is dry and sitting on a shelf under my potting bench- I rinse a big tupperware full every so often and put it within hands reach. Your local orchid society or a show if there is one soon, should be awash with suggestions on where to get the stuff. And probably somebody willing to go halvsies with you.

Rebecca, it's generally considered a bad idea. You can't get the nice flat rosette when two plants are competing for light and space. Now, you *could* put a mini trailer in that pot, and it would quite happy and fill the pot. That being said, some do put multiple plants in one pot, so really it's up to you. If you don't like it, you could always transplant. Korina

Thanks for posting pics and the comments. critter-ritter, do those mice ever look happy - nice. Gesila, you've shown some nice sized first year plants. Yes the roots will mingle just like they do in the garden. I have my pots on the deck which is bright shade and filtered over most of it, to a bit of it that is full sun for a couple of hours in the afternoon. The pots get a bit of water every day - I could probably go a couple of days between water - but hose is handy. andi and Gesila, I've only overwintering hosta over one winter, so I'll defer to those experts to correct what I add. In general, you want to keep them cold (no thaw and refreeze cycles) so most find shade on the north side of a structure. You also want to prevent the crown from sitting in water, again many tip pots on their sides so melting snow doesn't accumulate. Also a potting mix that drains well is important. I stored my pots in my unheated three season porch - and all survived. Do a GW search for "overwintering hosta in pots" should give you some good input. Cathy I am going to assume, comming from Heirloom that they will be in band size pots. Do you have a 1gal pots? Otherwise repotting into 12" should be fine to start with but no bigger and I would keep them in your shed especially this late in the winter. I would not bring them inside a heated house because then you will have to slowly introduce them to the outside temps. Keep them in the shed and bringing them out on sunny days. I keep young roses in a coldframe all winter without any problems and we had weeks of temp below freezing this winter along with snow. Liz
