I have a scape!! Oooh! A real scape!

I'm so excited about this. I thought I may go the whole year w/o bloom this year because everything was either moved in the fall and suffered winter damage OR is brand new to my garden this spring.

Well, one of the brand new plants has thrown a scape up today! It's Margo Reed's "Brown Witch". It is one of my most recent additions and has only been in the ground here since May 13. I have others that were planted the last week of April and they are just showing signs of recovery but no scapes.

I'm just dancing with joy...not only did the tornadoes miss us (barely) but I have a bloom coming!!!

berrytea4me. it could be that the others you got in April, bloom at a later time so the scape wasn't set before you recieved them. I have had blooms on a couple of my new ones but some have not scaped. Congratulations!!! Ellie

That is a gorgeous daylily. I am going to look it up. HOpe it's an evergreen that likes Florida. :)

Wow, that's a huge difference. It seems like my species typically only lose around 20% in weight if the scape is left on. The varies from species to species. I guess it probably depends on how big the seed heads are. As far as saving bulbils, and replanting them to increase stock, it is many times more effective as long as you make sure the seeds are mature, you dry them out, and plant them at the appropiate time. Some varieties can produce as many as 100 bulbils per plant while the bulb itself can be re-planted however with smaller cloves. I find that it only takes 2 years of growth to get to full sized bulbs as long as they get very favorable treatment until then. With the species that I am already producing a ton of, I usually allow 5-10% of them to produce scapes so that I have a few hundred of them to plant in my bulbil beds.

oh Kay,I am injoying watching that scape grow,its growing rather slow to me. JULIA, now you know I will have to get a picture of it when it blooms,and post it.:) I had a hard time this evening, The pollen was so heavy all over everything, till I decided to try and get the hose and sprinkle them and wash it off.Every thing you look at around here is covered with yellow dust.These are all inside the fence in the front yard,so I can spray them good. I don't do that out in the side yard or back yard.I water out there, but try not to wet the leaves on everything,. but it sprinkled a little during the night last night, so after washing pollen off everything in the front yard, I watered other stuff OUTSIDE the fence,and wore myself out pulling that hose around,and I was hurting so bad in my back,and I get muscle spasms in my back bad too. anyway when I finished that,I thought about that sprinkling we got last night, so I came in and mixed up my stinky stuff and went back out, spraying everything out there to keep the deer from eating it up tonight.If I don't do that,I will not see a single bloom out there.All the time I was doing all that,I kept thinking I sure wish I would have known about how dangerous Statin drugs can be,or I would never have took them.The Dr never told me how bad side effects can be.Just hope all this pain is not going to be permanent. Oh well, I am going to try and injoy all the daylilies when they bloom.They looking really healthy and green today. Jean

Oh Thank you all for all of these very nice comments.Every one of you must have wished for rain for me, because late last night and this morning, the rain did fall,Part of my yard was a lake,almost.It rained real close to 3 inches before quitting this afternoon.I just know the daylilies was very happy to have a good drink of water.I didnt check any to see if they got happy enough to push some more scapes up, but, if its not raining tomorrow,I will be checking all of them.My daughter came this afternoon for us to go out to the grocery store,and I told her about the scapes starting in my daylilies,and she looked at me so sad looking and says"I dont have any" I asked if she looked and she said yes,she did,and had nothing.I have a bed thats outside my front yard fence,and everything was so wet,I couldnt go spray everything to keep the deer from eating up everything,so I am hoping they dont hit my flower bed tonight,Not suppose to rain tomorrow, but more tonight, supposely. Oh - Sparling Burgundy! I like the look of the plant, as well as the flowers! Love to have one of those. And BME - it's beautiful... I have one in a pot and it bloomed nicely this year, but not as nicely as yours peren.all. Yours looks a little larger, maybe more mature, and maybe being in the ground makes a difference. I saw a picture online of Manhattan, though I've never seen one in person, and it seemed to have a really pretty flower formation and color.

Berrytea4me,ain't it exciting to see a new scape.I go out every day with in 15 m inutes after I get up and check to see if I have any new scapes or a bloom.Ain't spring wonderful, at least when the storms m iss us..

TD is gorgeous color. Is that what they call rose or is it considered a lavender or polychrome? Still trying to learn all this.

Yes, some of those I planted in April are later bloomers, however, they were also medium size fans and the week I planted them our temps dropped down to the 20s plus it was so windy that anything I tried to cover them with just blew off. I think they all got set back by the cold. This week they got lots of 80s weather and rain so it seems to be helping them. I see a little new growth even under all the leaves that yellowed. they all look like they shrunk in size though.

On the otherside of the planting season, I just received 2 shipments yesterday that are both badly yellowed. I suspect they sat in a hot truck.

Jean, yes, I love spring. I do the same thing. Grab my cup of coffee and head out to see what's new in the garden. It just makes my day go so much better to have that little "me" time.

I found a whole bunch of iris scapes today too. I did not expect any this year as again, everything was moved last fall and suffered winter damage.

Ellie, did you get a new camera? That picture is so clear and vibrant. Love that one , is it really that pink? Looks like a true pink.

My only scapes so far are from daylilies planted this spring from more southern locations too. I guess it's too early here for the "home grown" ones to show up yet.
