Rose 'Climbing Peace' at its best.

I have had this rose for a few years. It was actually a mistake. I had ordered another rose, and was sent this one. I decided to keep it. I think it really liked the horse manure I applied because it is really putting on a fabulous display.

Best clematis to grow with MAC climbing rose

Pruning group 1 are all species clematis and purple is not really a color option with these. You can get some nice bluey/lavenders with the alpinas or macropetalas however. I would recommend a pruning group 3 vine. These prefer to be hard pruned annually, which I find easiest to deal with when growing through or on other plants. 'Jackmanii', 'Gypsy Queen' or 'Etoile Violette' are all great purple flowered varieties. Try and avoid watering on any foliage. It promotes all manner of diseases, especially with roses. You may have manually adjust your sprinkler head to accomplish this.

Mine was a bareroot from a big box store, I forget which one. Its companion, supposed to be Cl. Queen Elizabeth, ended up as the rootstock, Dr. Huey, oh, phooey, but I kept it and it's lovely in the spring, all that red. Climbing Peace has thrived. I put a steel post opposite the arbor post and trained nearly half the canes over to the new post, late in the winter. I googled for the Rose Emporium -- they sold out of Cl. Peace. Nell

Hi there everyone, As per my previous posts and my profile I am a relative newcomer to the United States. I emigrated here from England in 2002, arriving 2/14 (just call me a romantic). We live on a 167 acre farm East of Independence MO. The immediate yard is approximately 90,000 sq ft. We recently bought 22 or 23 climbing roses of various names and colours to wend their way through a privacy fence around the inner yard (read flower garden). I also have 20 Clematis to pick up from a local nursery to accentuate the roses during periods of there being no blooms. Or if I am fortunate enough, to have one compliment the other. How close to the Roses should the Clematis be planted? I have planted the Roses approximately eight feet apart. We recently installed a deck and I read with some interest in a previous post about a rose climbing around a deck. I must admit I like the idea, but I did wonder about the thorns being so close to where people will be, do you find this a problem or do folks just tend to be wary of the roses and admire them from a distance. Oh and last but not least I recently watched a TV program where a lady stuck a banana in the bottom of the hole where she planted a Rose, any comments critiscisms or suggestions greatfully accepted and encouraged. Tammy~ Peace is one of my ALL TIME favorite roses!!!I've never seen a climbing Peace in person, but have heard of it. You lucky girl!!! LOVE IT!!

My Peace (bush) that I had at my old house got better and better each year--an amazing rose with so much history too. It was a real showstopper!! I planted another Peace (bush) here at the new house last summer, and it has already produced some lovely blooms. I think it will follow as the other bush did and improve over the years until it becomes a showstopper--with those typical whopper blooms--at least I hope so!

Thanks for sharing your beautiful roses and garden with us!

BTW can you tell us what the pink cl. rose next to cl. Peace is?

Becky, I think I read a little about the history last night. I am going to go back and re-read. The rose beside Peace is Madame Isaac Pereire. It has always been by favorite due to the wonderful fragrance that just seems to surround you as soon as you walk out onto the porch.
I obtained Peace quite by accident. I had ordered a rose , which I cant remember which one now offhand, from some company such as Michigan bulb or maybe Springhill. But after it bloomed I realized it was the wrong one. It wasnt an impressive bloom, but I just didnt bother complaining. Now I am glad I didnt.
Check out this other old red rose on the other side of my porch. I dont even know who it is, but it is beautiful this year as well. They all look so full of bloom this yr.Where the Peace was on the left of the steps, this bed is on the right of my steps. This bed is getting overgrown and messy, and needs some work. We are planning on starting to pull all these shrubs in front since they are getting so large and hubby is getting tired of trimming them. I would love to put in a nice cottage garden bed, but hubby likes the look of lots of mulch or rock around the plants. So for the most part I let him have the front, and I do what i want with the back gardens.
