transferring cuttings to clear plastic cup

I don't know if anyone else has this problem, but I'm finding it very difficult to find clear plastic cups larger than 10oz. I've looked in quite a few stores and been very dissapointed. Where do you all get your cups from and what is the ideal size?

Walmart has 16oz clear ones. I also have 32oz clear cups that are deli containers that I get from a local restaurant supply. Thanks.

Iris, "I have decided to use the clear cups because they are such a suitable size for wax begonias. I will set them in a cake pan to obscure the sides." That sounds like a good plan. Don't forget to put drainage holes in the cups. How you do that might be kind of a challenge. I once used a soldering iron to melt holes in plastic, but that was messy and smelly. I guess I would try an electric drill or Dremel tool first. The clear pots could be an advantage, because it will let you see the roots as soon as they reach the sides of the pots and you can visually determine if your cutting plants are starting to get root-bound. Some plants, like Orchids, actually like clear pots. Aircone pots are clear and have a special design to get more aeration for the growing medium. ZM

I found the main concern for me when I tried these was moisture. Those berry and cherry-tomato containers have a lot of openings in the bottom, and I found them drying out more quickly than other containers. I ended up covering some of the holes with tape, and that worked. I suppose if you do that right when you are sowing (instead of waiting till the containers are outside in mid-winter and you have to go kneel on cold hard asphalt and rip tape and apply it with frozen hands) it may work for you. Some of the smaller berry containers may be a bit shallow, as northerner says, but I think the larger ones (strawberries, for instance) may work, again if you deal with the openings. They certainly are convenient - holes in the bottom, attached lid - *almost* a perfect WSing container! Almost, because the other thing is that there is not a lot of headroom for the seedlings in most of these containers. If you are like me and neglect everything, you may want to choose a container with more headroom, because you may end up removing two-foot-tall plants from your containers! Dee

How long can I leave a rooted cutting in a drinking cup?

Heather, I propagate outdoors. I have about fourteen rooted cuttings still in the sixteen ounce foam cups I rooted them in back in January-February. I have to keep them watered religiously as they receive about four hours of direct sun daily. I have no idea how long you can keep them in cups indoors as I can't root things inside here. Yours may be ready to take from the bags, but you can't just pull them out and expect them not to wilt. They are soft from being inside a "close environment". They must be gradually hardened off, slowly, so they can become accustomed to the hotter, drier air and brighter light, just as you have to get used to the hotter, brighter sun after being inside all winter. You go out for an eight hour gardening session after not being out in the hot sun for a few months over winter and you're going to fry quickly. The absolute best time to accomplish this is during a period of rain. Rainy weather is overcast, cool and damp. Putting newly rooted, soft plants outside in a rain where they are bathed in rain water permits them to acclimate easier, faster. Otherwise, you should gradually open the bags to permit more of the high humidity inside them to escape, giving that soft tissue a chance to slowly toughen up. You can't rush it, expect it to take a couple of weeks of slowly, gradually exposing them to hotter, drier, more direct sun conditions, a very little at a time. But, if you are going in to a week of rains and they aren't hard, severe rain, you can put them out in the rain and let it help you accomplish your goal. Kim

XYLENE IS POISON. It also is sometimes found in natural gas at low concentration. To give you an idea of how poisonous: Dirt near a gas well is hauled away as hazardous waste if it contains 25 parts per million of xylene. If you can smell it, you are at risk. The stuff is tough on the liver at high doses, and carcinogenic at low doses. Stay safe. Buy the transfer paper or use an iron.

I too had a hard time finding them. I got some 16 oz. which worked quite well in PathMark supermarket if you have one near you. Sometimes they are out of that size and you have to ask the Manager to order some as they do carry them. I also found some larger thicker clear plastic in a Dollar store. These were harder to put holes in. Drilling cracked them. A small sodering iron worked well on both. The man at the deli counter in Stop & Shop didn't know where they got theirs. He gave me 2, the same as I got in the Dollar store.
You just have to shop around. Tain't easy!

I went to the local supermarket's deli counter where they sold me some of those tall 32oz clear plastic containers that they sell food in. The girl behind counter just weighed up the empty cups, and put a sticker on the stack of cups. I don't know what she charged me a pound, but it worked out to about 10 cents a cup.

Good job Dan, that is exactly what I use. I use my micro-tipped Fiskars to poke three holes in the bottom of a stack of three.

I love using clear containers because I can visually monitor the rooting.

I had been looking for such plastic pots/glasses all over the city. Finally one day last week I bumped into ( I thought ) the biggest ever clear plastic party glasses at a dollar store. These were marked Madison Collection 16 oz reutilisable plastic cup, 12 for a dollar. However, I felt disappointed when I read Jon's description of 45oz glass. I thought pushing from a 10oz to 16oz finding was difficult enough so how can I find 45oz. However, Jon corrected me in his post that it should have been 20oz instead of 45oz. So I hope to bump into the 20oz size sometimes and until then I will use the 16 oz ones. Also, I noticed in the grocery store "Sierra Mix" dry fruits/nuts in a plastic pot that looked perfect size for the job but with a price tag of four dollars with the dry sierra mix. So I thought I should have at least one perfect pot because so far I have one cuting anyway so I bought the Sierra Mix. It turned out to be 32oz (35oz?) size made by FABRI-CAL Corp mentioned by JON. I asked the attendant about the availability of pots only but he said luckily the pots are imported filled with the Sierra Mix.

I cut 2 quart soda bottles in half to get clear containers for cuttings. It is free if you drink soda and it is bigger than the clear cups that I find in dollar stores.

I ended up with Walmart 16 oz claer plastic cups. They aren't quite what I was hoping for, but they'll do. I'm sure at some point during this year I'll come upon large clear clups and remember to buy them in preperation for the coming season.

I just potted up about 60 cuttings using 16 and 20 ounce clear water and soda bottles. I just cut out the top portion about halfway up the neck. When I was done I set the now cut off neck part of the bottle back onto the potted cutting. I think this should keep the humidity high. I only left about 2" and one or two buds exposed. Hope this will work! Kern
