Please allow me an introduction, My name is Elizabeth. I live in South Central Idaho; my elevation here is 3,670 ft. Annual Precipitation is 10.4in. Our mean snowfall is 31.3 in. the high temp in July of this year was 90.0 and our low temperature for January was 18.6. Snowfall distribution is affected both by availability of moisture and by elevation. Annual snowfall totals in North Idaho have reached nearly 500 inches in the past. The greatest long-term (1942-56) seasonal average was 182 inches at Mullen Pass(which is over 5100 Feet), while the greatest snow depth (also 182 inches) was recorded at that station on February 20, 1954. The major mountain ranges of the state accumulate a deep snow cover during the winter months, and the release of water from the melting snow-pack in late spring furnishes irrigation water for more than two million acres, mainly within the Snake River Basin. I desperately need the taste of fresh figs on my tounge. My question to you knowledgeable people is...Are there figs trees I can grow here?

Giuseppe, I planted a Three foot Bayernfeige Violette in the ground last spring. The tree had a few breba on it that I cut off. When the main crop started to appear I started to cut off these figs. The tree grow so vigorously that I quit cutting off the figs. I did get to taste a few of the figs before frost. The figs had a slight sweet taste. To my thinking it was not a great tasting fig. I am hoping it will improve with age. Vern

The Bronx, NYC is maybe a little warmer (7-b). "Atreano" grows without protection, in a container, and makes very large, sweet, golden-yellow figs. It's a prolific producer, and is also a vigorous grower. Easy to train into a ...tree...bush...or, whatever. Make sure you get it from a clean source that's not infected with Fig Mosaic Virus, or you might have problems from the cold temps. and weak plants. That goes for any fig variety that you will plant. Rob; I'm in Oklahoma and I'd not hazard a guess on weather in Michigan. If I planted a tree now I'd sure be prepared to cover it and protect it against any freezes for a few weeks yet. Here in OK the grass is turning green. Green-up, when the trees all leaf out, is less than two weeks away. Yes, the tips of the branches on my Violetta were cut off--it would not have gone in the box otherwise. One little branch low down about two inches long was left. I don't think that matters; I cut the top off the Chicago Hardy whip I got from Plantranch and today I saw other buds swelling on the trunk. The tip I cut off is rooting. Ox
