My early bronze age computer doesn't do videos. What does it show?

damn. what's with the awful techno music? Shame none of those gentlemen were crushed beneath one of the giants they were killing. "hard-working" american or not.

yeah the music was funny. I got the impression that whoever put the clip together thought it was awesome to be hacking down the trees.

there are several of those on youtube. In one some naturalist makes an argument that cutting down the oldgrowth redwoods is good for the forest because it creates more diversity and sucker clumps qucikly grow into large trees that support species that lived in the old growth habitat.

Does that sound right? I guess I could tolerate cutting down some trees, Im more concerned about their overall loss of habitat.

Not in some cases. The best known is probably Marbled Murrelet, which needs trees centuries old for nesting in. Only when the trees get very large do they acquire the epiphytic moss and fern mats where the Murrelets lay their eggs.

I mean, does any argument that comes out of the mouth of somebody who's got an agenda to log the hell out of the forest and make money doing so really matter? What good is any argument when ratoinale and logic are NOT part of the motivation behind it, but rather GREED is? Just like our idiot president's "healthy forests" initiative, most of these arguments that you hear from logging companies are TOTAL jokes.

I'm not against logging, but I am against having smoke blown up my @$$. I'm against being condescended to by some business sleaze with an agenda. There's no reason that's good enough to log OLD GROWTH. NOT ONE. Leave what little is left behind. Otherwise, break out the monkeywrench and head towards the bulldozers.

I think some people are afraid of trees for some reason.

Not trying to start a huge argument, but just to play devils advocate. there is one reason...and thats people want the wood for consumer purposes. You and I probably agree that's not a great reason to kill a 1000 year old tree, but nonetheless thats why they do it, people buy it.

Like I said I could tolerate some cutting of large trees as long as others were protected. That seems like the best of both worlds for habitat quality. Keep some old growth to support species that depend on it, but keep forests dynamic so that you can have more diversity.

The problem is that there just arent enough lands set aside for natural areas becuase there are so many people who need houses to live in and shopping malls to buy junk at.

At the end of the day we need more forests (of whatever age) and less sprawling subdivions of ugly homogeneous boxes.

trees can and will in time adapt to climatic change, logging, whatever. We just need to give them a fighting chancve by not crowding them out of existence.....will get off of my soapbox now.
