Can you believe it, its already AUGUST!

Rudbeckia hirta 'Prairie Sun' - this one is new one for me this year, I love it and will be planning on sowing these every year!

Datura meteloides

Achillea filipendulina 'Cloth of Gold', Eryngium planum Sea Holly and Echinacea purpurea Purple Coneflower - this one is for you Pudge ;)

Thanks Sharon. That's a beautiful combination. The variety growing around here isn't near that tall - 2' at the very most. It must not be Cloth of Gold. In any case, I'll gather seeds in the fall as well as ask for divisions in the spring.

No i can't believe it's August! Great pics, as usual, Sharon! :)

Here are some of mine.

A morning glory has wound its way up the lattice and into a geranium on the steps. Kind of weird looking!

Here are the cosmos and morning glories - not to mention the usual stray dill plant.

Clematis tangutica 'Radar Love' (i think) - winter sown last year.

A few lilies, and echinacea Sunrise. I finally weeded this bed today - nasty!

Hi everyone, Thanks for commenting on the pics--I really appreciate it and I'm glad you enjoyed it. Aren't those zinnias great? They're virtually foolproof for summer color as long as they get occasional water (but like I said, I do head out of town a lot even in summer and they have to survive w/o automatic irrigatin). Let's see...since these pics do not show my Tree of Shame (which now has twenty one baskets it in), I can reply with what's hanging in the tree in pic #2. Thanks for asking...there are three pots of cascading vinca ('Mediterranean Apricot Broadeye' which I started from seeds from Park Seed Co...it cascades wonderfully), there's a pot with one of the "mule's ears" kalanchoes (Kalanchoe gastonis-bonnieri), a lantana (I stand firm as a fan of them, lol), a blue flowering puya (Puya berteroniana that I also grew from seed (what can I say? I'm cheap!)), and if you look closely, at the left, you can see some spaghetti-like stems dangling in the air...that pot is actually hung so high (16 feet) that you can't see it, but it's full of Rapunzel plant, Sarcostemma viminale which almost touches the ground now (I had to hang it by standing on a very tall ladder and I have to arc water up to its pot with the hose once a week), and finally, the dark bronze-purple plant does indeed look like purple hearts from this distance, but it's my new favorite ornamental sweet potato 'Sweet Caroline Bronze' which stays compact and makes great bronzey-burgundy leaves which emerge a golden chartreuse, AND it loves full sun. Thanks everyone, ssk22, I have a friend on the palm forum from your area with just as much if not more than me outside. He just has to go thruogh great measures to protect everything during winter. Beachplants, I love that agave ovatifolia has to be my favorite. I will probably cry when one of mine goes into bloom because those are one of the few agaves that don't sucker. Tom the yucca in question is an aloifolia. It grew as a second head to the mother plant, but broke off at 12' tall. The owner was a friend and so I cut it and brought it home. every year I just dig it up and turn it to get a different curve. My soil is hard red clay so I tilled it pretty good added enough gravel, compost, and top soil to raise the bed about 4". About the musa if its in a pot and not too big I would keep it in a heated room with lights so that it would still have a full crown come spring. If you have to place it in the garage by spring it will be just a pole. I didn't plant my musa its first year and keep it in a dark location. The pseudostem rotted, so I had to cut it to the corm.

I hope nobody minds if I cheat a bit and include pics from the past couple of weeks. I have been too busy to post and have been fighting with computer problems. A dead monitor replaced by a new fancy schmancy flat wide screen that didn't work on my tired old computer has meant downtime, repairs and endless upgrades... Everyone's pictures are fantastic (I have been checking them out at work but don't tell the boss...) Here are some of mine. My biggest thrill was the 'Dotcom' lily I have waited 2 years for. I ordered in fall '04 and it wasn't available so reordered last fall and here she is: I think this unknown red lily wiht huge blooms was from a mixed bag: My first ever tiger lily: I love this shaggy mop top rudbeckia (Rudbeckia hirta 'Burpeei Double Gold') wintersown last year: Cosmos 'Double Click': My new favorite Dianthus 'Theif of Hearts': Always a great show from Gloriosa Daisy: Daylily 'Frans Hals' (thanks Doris!) and Mexican Hats (Ratibida columnaris): White coneflowers: Susan

Marcia that last one is Amaranthus Velvet Curtains...I think thats the one. I have a bunch that are huge...that one is almost 3 ft tall! Laurie those are Calceolaria. The red one is Sunset Red and the yellow ones were just labeled rugosa. I love them. The big yellow one bloomed its head off like that all summer! The flowers are not very big, about the size of a quarter. But they start out tiny, about the size of a pencil eraser then they just get bigger. The small yellow one I started from seed last year. It is being pushed out by a gallardia that I started from seed. Its the pic right below them...its just blooming now, I hope it makes it thru the winter. The Sunset Red and the huge yellow one I started from seed this year. I definitely need to find a new place for all of them because they are pretty low growing plants and they are all hidden under stuff!

My company just left this morning so once my camera finishes recharging I'll scoot out there and see what's new.

Yes, beautiful flowers everyone!

We had another frost this morning, not quite as heavy as yesterday morning. I agree with Ang, lets send Mr. F packing until at least Nov or Dec...even late Oct. I don't know if I will see many dahlia flowers this year...most are just starting to bloom.
Oh well, there is always next years garden to think about.
