Another one you can take to the bank.

This tree is a good choice as a specimen, or for smaller gardens where a tall conifer is wanted without giving over too much horizontal space.

A little work to acclimate, depending on your micro-climate, but well worth the extra effort.

Any serious collector will have a spot for this one in their garden.

Big or small....it doesn't matter. Post a photo.

I like the idea of cultivar galleries, there's a lot of special ones out there. 'Skylands' certainly qualifies.

I was happy to read about your trials with this conifer when I was researching it. Shade cloth for the first 2 years seems to be a must for full sun placement. Or as the tag says "protection may be warranted in scorching summer climates".

Mine the day it showed up in the mail this spring. Smaller than either of yours lol. I notice you both have killer dark backgrounds which make your skylands pop even more.

Actually it looks a good amount bigger now. Perhaps tomorrow I will get another picture.

With the shade in full sun requirements why do you think skylands is so popular? I agree it did seem a must have. Even if I saw 100 yellow growth conifers in Ohio this spring there is something about this one I cant describe.

Interesting you should ask that, Will.. Because it quickly went from barely-white to the white/silver typical of this cultivar and then burned in the sunlight and warm temps to some extent.. Many other parts of the plant suffered slight burn. This branch was the best-looking. That being said, I believe the white color does come on after the growth matures. If this has anything to do with the fact that the nights are becoming cooler, I wouldn't know... -Sam

so take it easy on me. ==>>> never!!!!! ... lol planted two falls ago .. what did it do last summer??? IMHO ... its simply too green ... it should never be that green ... at worst.. it would look chlorotic.. or.. yellowish green ... in lack of perfect sunlight ... as to the shearing.. what can i say ... i like natural form .... if it dont fit.. then i dont plant it ... on the other side... its yours.. knock yourself out.. but learn how to do it properly.. when i think shearing ..... i think privet/boxwood.. and electric shears ... this could be PRUNED ... insure you learn the difference ... and since i dont do it.. i cant help ... of course there is that one basal cut.. so you can plant an actual skylands a foot over or two ... [that means cut it at ground level and be done with it] ... if you want skylands .... ken

My Picea Orientalis 'Aureospicata' (Similar to 'Early Gold') only grows a few inches a year. Maybe it will grow much faster when it fully establishes. 'Early Gold' should be able to take full sun. It's a pretty tough tree, I don't water my 'Aureospicata' too often and it doesn't show any stress. Spring Photos:

Well, this one's a teaser. First there is the thread that shows up in the forum, but when you excitedly click to see, you find out the post has been edited to remove the content with no link to follow. Bummer, I agree :( But thanks to forum members I learned about the conifer gallery and found the beautiful photo there. My baby Skylands is slowly pushing out new growth for several weeks now. They have started to elongate, but needles have not unfurled yet.

Mine is part of a border in right front of my house. Behind is Picea abies 'Pendula' and Picea orientalis 'Aureospicata'. Light was too bright at current heat. Bernd
