too late for cosmos? from seed?

I had a garden plan, and it was great... in my head. Then the slugs and snails came, and now with no zinnias or rudbeckia or amaranthus or sunflowers or.... etc.... I'm thinking I could just throw out a bunch of cosmos seeds to fill the now considerable gaps in my plan, since the cosmos seedlings are among the few survivors still standing untouched by the slime beasts. But is it too late? If I sow them now will they still flower? Please reassure me that I don't have to settle for big blank mulch beds.
