This planter has more or less had the same theme for years. Colours change, but the plants Osteo, petunias and verbena always stay the same. I find that they tolerate the heat well.

This is the first year that I have grown Lantana. I has fast become a favorite this spring for me. The colours constantly change.

Shelley, take your lantana inside for the winter. I had one for three years before the frost finally got it.

Gotta love seeing all these pics- but it adds to my want list! Oh well, I'm headed out of town for a couple weeks, so I won't be buying anything now! I also won't be posting any pics-- I packed the camera!

Marcia, do you prune your Lantana down before you bring it in? What else would you do to it before you bring it in?

Oops... Should of offered my lantana to someone.. It hit bin 13 yesterday... For some reason I'm developing allergies this year... And it was a killer..
Starting to think I might have to get rid of some of my highly scented plants.. Think their starting bother me too...

Shelley, when i first brought it in, it was in a hanging basket and still blooming. This was probably in late October and i just set it on the floor of the porch and forgot about it. I was doing some cleaning up in there after Christmas and found that the lantana was still alive. I watered it and hung it in a south facing window, and it lived happily there until it was time to go outside again. The blooms weren't so prolific, though. I haven't gotten another one since that one bit the dust - time to get one or two more, i think!

Jan, no, no, it was only the Mock Orange that took so long to bloom, this has been the first year since living out here that I have seen any blooms on this shrub, usually with no snow coverage every year there was either lots of winterkill on the branches or we had a late frost killing off all the buds. This winter/spring was perfect weather.

Ahhhh, but the Angelica archangelica attracts the beneficial wasps too, haven't seen or felt any stinging kind yet ;) I never did get your A. gigas seeds to germinate, I sure the heck wasn't going to pay $15 for a plant at Holes. I'm not going to give up thou, I'll give it one more try to germinate gigas, this time I'm just going to direct sow in the Fall ;)

Hi Laurie,
I believe that I have had the plant for about five years and it is only the second time that it has bloomed.
I did pile leaves around the plant last fall and I suspect that is why I didnÂt lose the bud to cold.
When I bought this plant it had a label around a stem saying orange. I decided not to take it back anyway.

Sharon, I researched the genista lydia and by what the hardiness zone info says it shouldn't grow for me in zone 3. LOL I saw anywhere from 4 to 7B for zones. I can say that it does beautifully here and I'm a cold cold zone 3 so it might just be worth a shot for you. I know from experience it performs best in full sun, I have some at home in more shade than sun and while it grows and blooms it's nothing as great as the work plants. So will be moving mine this fall to a sunny location.

Gil, thanks for posting your Wood Lilies, is the botanical name for them Lilium philadelphicum? I think you just identified what I have growing in the front bed, I think?, I'll have to take a photo tomorrow to match it up with yours. The lady that lived here before must of planted them.

Anyways, I went out to the pumphouse (11.30pm) to get some bread out of the freezer and to my delight my Datura meteloides is blooming!

Oh darn, I forgot to take a whiff while I was taking the photos, I'll be right back! LOL

Sharon - wow nice datura! Yes the lilies are L. philadelphicum, the floral emblem of SK. They are regionally variable and very common - I noticed in last week's photo thread at least three people posted them as unknowns. My friend calls them Seven Sisters, I think that's cute because you never have just one ;0)

Oh yeah and no it's not laceflower, I am not showing you the leaves because it would be too easy... maybe if nobody else guesses ;0)

My guess for the filler flower is cilantro coriandrum sativum.
I planted that last year and ended up using it in my arrangements. The flowers are delicate and quite long lasting. I hadn't planted it with that intent, though.

Yes, it's Cilantro, good eye! The lower leaves look completely different. I planted some last year and it self-seeded (abundantly) in my rose garden.

It is interesting to know that Cilantro seeds are Coriander, as you can tell by its Latin name.

Here's one of the arrangements using the cilantro. This is from last year's flower show. We aren't having a flower show this year as we just don't have enough members to stage one. Too bad though, as I had just found out how much fun it was to enter arrangements.

Savona, how tall does your Yellow Flag Iris get for you? I WS'ed seeds this winter and had really good germination. I tried googling it for growing info and found out that it can be invasive and clog wetlands. It also said they can grow to over 6 feet tall! I'm assuming that they wouldn't be that big or aggressive in our climate, but it made me a little reluctant to plant them out, lol.

I had really good luck WSing a couple of different types of Iris seeds. Does anybody have any idea how long it will take them to bloom from seed?

Cindy, I have had a clump of yellow flag iris for hmmmm maybe 5 years. I divided it for the first time last summer. Its not that invasive in the garden.....but don't go planting it in the wild wet lands. Last year my plant was a good 4 feet tall, so far this year its maybe 3 feet tall. Its like most perennials in the garden...every few years it needs to be divided. I suspect the more water it gets the taller it will get and the more it will spread.
My plants have just started blooming here.

I think the tallest my yellow flags has gotten is about 4 feet tall..this year mine are shorter again for what ever reason..in a garden setting mine have never gotten out of control in fact they have to be divide every few years as they grow out from the center and pretty soon you have a ring of foliage with an empty center to the clump.
I was happily waiting and waiting for this day lily to bloom..I was sure I planted either a Bela Lugosi or Strawberry Candy in this spot last year.as the scape matured I noticed it was looking pretty yellowish/orangey..I dont remember buying this one and I think someone put a ringer into one of the bags I bought last year..lol...but pretty nevertheless

Savona, your daylily could have been a tissue cultured one. So you very well could have planted what you thought was Bela Lugosi or Strawberry Candy, but your daylily won't look like them if it was a TC. It is still a lovely apricot colour though. Much nicer than my mud brown daylily that was supposed to be Purple Waters :(

Thank you for the compliments on the arrangement. Yeah Sharon, you're right about all the flowers and foliage. I really had to scrounge in my yard to come up with enough to put together a few entries, but it was fun.
A warning to you, Northspruce, entering flower shows is a bit addictive,LOL. But I'm encouraging you to enter. When is your show?

The show is in August, mid month sometime without looking it up. My roses usually have the best flushes in June and September, but hopefully I will have something to enter. I heard they let newbies win to get them hooked... LOL!

Laurie - You rlast picture is great. I love those leaves and would love to make a mold to make stepping stones using them. I see you are a zone three, that makes me very happy. Cool, cool plant. Everyone's flowers are gorgeous. So many that are different than I've seen. Can we trade seeds etc across the border? LOL

Laurie, I hope you got your Petasites japonicus in a big bed by itself. I had to RoundUp mine last year, it was taking over everything. Nice bold plant, but be warned it's very invasive ;)

Echoes, yes it is a cool looking plant, at least I like it anyway! This is year 4 for it and these are the biggest the leaves have ever gotten. The largest leaf on the top left hand corner is 33" across. Now that would make one HUGE stepping stone!lol I've made concrete leaf castings before, but used the native burdock leaves instead of cutting the leaves off this guy.

Red Prince Wiegela - rather sparse on the leaves but a ton of blooms. Seems to like its new home in a sunny spot.

Container with a bit of 'this & that' - canary vine is new for me this year. Rather like the way it is filling in the container, but will have to cut it back a bit before it strangles everything else.
