Did My Endless Summer Kick the Bucket?

Hi,

I live in zone 5 - Syracuse, New York. I have (I hope) a two-year-old Endless Summer hydrangea. Other perennials in my garden seem to be coming up really well - lots of green, including my Limelight hydrangeas and Annabelle's but the Endless Summer just looks like a bunch of dried-up sticks. Anyone else have one and, if so, how does yours look?

Hi Patreesh,
I am in zone 6 and have had a neglected Endless Summer rooted cutting sitting in a pot for 2 years and the leaves have already appeared on it. I finally gave it to my daughter-in-law last week. You can break off a branch and if you have green in the stem then there is still hope. There should have been some growth from the bottom also. I have a question for you. Do you have your limelight hydrangea in the sun or shade. I planted one last year and it is in the shade. I have very small leaves appearing this week. What are your thoughts.

Thanks for the information. I'll do as you suggest tomorrow and snap a branch or two while I'm weeding (ugh). I have three limelight hydrangeas. They are all in full sun and all do beautifully. From what I've read about them they do well in full sun to part shade. Love that plant. Wish I had that kind of luck with delphiniums!

I hear you all. Don't know what these crazy plants like. I have 4. 2 new ones doing well in full sun but had buds when I bought them. One gets shade from 2pm on. Nothing blooming yet. Not even a sign of it. Died to the ground over winter. The last one gets sun from noon to sunset with a break from 2-3 pm. It looks as though it may have one bud coming. It has been in place for 3 years now. I bought it the very first year they were out. Dies to the ground every winter and has never got bigger than 12 inches in all directions. I am so disappointed and stupid enough to have invested in 2 new ones this year. What are the other continuous bloomers out there? I am new to hydrangeas It may be time to consider replacing the 3 year old.

Hi, I agree with Dave. It sounds like damping off. You may have very well done exactly the same as previous years, but weather conditions can effect what happens. if it is cold and wet out and plants are newly transplanted so there is not much roots to the size of the container, the water is not going to dissipate quick enough and things can go wrong. "not enough hours" I understand. It is tiring. My back is killing me today for working on the yard. Trying to weed and pull a trumpet vine whose roots refuse to die and have reached all the way to the Planet Jupiter. 25 years trying to kill it!!! Oh, my back, ouch! I need a warm pool with an automatic wine dispenser!!! Hee, hee, hee.

Ok WAIT! I just pulled up about 6 roses because they "looked" dead. Rookie mistake. We have the same weather so I had the same issue with the changing weather. I followed the advice I was given on here and put them in pots and have been babying them ever since. Of the 6 only one is dead. Now I have 5 pots and no more space in the ground. If you didn't know roses are an addition for most of us. I used the empty holes in the ground as an excuse to buy new ones :( Anyway, one of the ones I took out was Blossomtime, a climber. She's thriving in that pot and now I have to find a new spot and a trellis for her. Check and see if your rose blooms on old or new wood. And if it's a late bloomer. All things I neglected. You can wait or put it in a pot and get another one in the meantime. There are several post about which climbers are hardiest.

Patreesh I have 6 Endless Summers and only 2 are showing signs of life right now. I would give it another week or two. 4 of them are 5 years old and only two of these are showing signs of life. The other 2 are only going on 3 years...The 2 showing life are in direct sun, the other two are in part shade. I wouldn't write em off yet. They are pretty hardy. My bluelace hydrangea is not showing any signs of life yet either nor are the 3 old white ones that are about 30 years old. (don't know the names of them)

Scratch a stem with your finger nail. If you see green under the bark it's still kickin.

Last year I thought my was dead but I did not get around to taking it out then it started growth from the base late in the spring. This past winter I put a cone over it and it looks better. Amy
