Scapes on Long Island!!

Several of my daylilies have scapes and are going strong here on Long Island which is quite early...early as one can imagine. These are not even Stella's. Should be an interesting year, and maybe a lot of annuals will be needed to full in and retain color after the very early flush of bloom this year! Never had roses bloom in late April and early May before either. It's funny seeing them bloom with the lilacs and before the peonies and even before all my hostas (the large size ones) are fully up. Isn't this why we garden? It's always a different Kalioscope every year, new surprises...a whole different show! It's like playing golf...you never know what you're going to get!!! Andrea

Yes indeed, Andrea. I have never had daylilies and Iris blooming at the same time before, but do this year. Everything but the iris has been early, and they ere on time. Odd year. But scapes are exciting, aren't they?

Andrea, are you near the city or more out on the island? I am here in Nassau County right near the sound on the north shore and I haven't seen any scapes. Now I will have to go out and look extra hard at my early bloomers just to make extra sure. My roses are budded up but aside from a few stray blooms here and there that are early (which always happens each year) they are not ready to bloom yet. Although I am sure they will bloom early this year. I have the last of my daffodils and tulips still blooming while my Tall Bearded Iris just started. Too early for them also.

My lilacs are still blooming but I really am astounded that you have scapes starting!

Yes that's a scape! I pick mine when they are about 18" long, but 12" is fine also. I never heard of the rule to harvest the bulbs three weeks after the scapes appear - that would be a bit early for me. Best to harvest when about half of the leaves are yellow/brown but you still have 3-4 leaves that are mostly green. TomNJ

Wow, that's a huge difference. It seems like my species typically only lose around 20% in weight if the scape is left on. The varies from species to species. I guess it probably depends on how big the seed heads are. As far as saving bulbils, and replanting them to increase stock, it is many times more effective as long as you make sure the seeds are mature, you dry them out, and plant them at the appropiate time. Some varieties can produce as many as 100 bulbils per plant while the bulb itself can be re-planted however with smaller cloves. I find that it only takes 2 years of growth to get to full sized bulbs as long as they get very favorable treatment until then. With the species that I am already producing a ton of, I usually allow 5-10% of them to produce scapes so that I have a few hundred of them to plant in my bulbil beds.

Rita...Of course I knew you would just have to go out and check on your daylilies, esp. Saratoga Springtime...I had a little giggle when I was writing it because I could see in my mind's eye you running out of the house. I hope you didn't get wet! Giggle...Giggle. Kay...I've been loving your pictures and all your enthusiasm this early spring. Alas, I'm pretty computer illiterate when it comes to pictures right at this moment and unfortunately my little old computer isn't called "last legs" for nothing ...which is why I'm usually just enjoying everybodies wonderful posts when I do get a chance and not speaking up toooo tooooo much. But, I knew I would get "caught" for pictures someday...was just biding my time! Well, I have good intentions, and when my schedule is a little less hectic here with work and Mr. Computer is having a nice day...I may just surprise all of you someday....but no promises...yet! Ngraham...sorry about the hostas, I know when it comes to gardening, it certainly is a day by day experience, and nothing is for certain. Good ole Mother Nature! She keeps us hopping! Andrea

Ken taught me how to do this, so I'll teach you. (I tend to overdo detail, so forgive the extra verbiage.) I assume you know how to get the pictures on your computer, so I'm just going to tell you how to get them on gardenweb (and in emails when you can't send an attachment). 1. Set up a photobucket.com account - it's free. Just go there, sign up and remember your password. 2. Sign into your photobucket account. Click on "upload images and videos". Your list of files will come up. 3. Navigate to the files you want to share. Click on it. (If you want to upload more than one, hold down the shift key while clicking on them.) The file will then be uploaded to photobucket. 4. Your photo(s) will come up. you can add names and descriptions here. Click "save". 5. Your photos will come up on a page titled "in this album". 6. Click on the photo. It will come up in a new window. On the left-hand side of the page is a box with a bunch of stuff in it. Click on "HTML Code". A little yellow box comes up saying "copied". 7. Now, go to your gardenweb post and wherever you want the photo, just hit CTRL and V keys at the same time and a bunch of gibberish will come up. (If not, you did not get the HTML code copied and pasted to your post Â so, copy and paste again.) 8. On gardenweb, hit the "preview message" button and you'll see your photo. While writing this tutorial, I walked through the process I use. There are many more ways to do it, I'm sure. There are lots more photo sites other than photobucket. I'm just telling you how I do it. bkay

Yes Rita, definitely scapes! I live on the south shore, suffolk county. One daylily is a very early blooming red I received from a daylily society sales years ago and I'll have to check on the other daylily that's just beginning scapes to see which one that is. The early red is unidentified, I actually saw its scape last week, tomorrow I'll check around some more. Sometimes your lilies start to bloom earlier than mine so I'm curious to see if you have some scapes lurking out there somewhere. My knockout's are starting to bloom, about a month or month and a half earlier than usual, especially the one's I didn't get a chance to prune yet...which may be the key. Lilacs (all types all at once this year) and quite a few clematis in bloom, some for awhile(Montanas) and some just starting (The President, etc), bacholar buttons, azelas, tree peony,and of course, forget me nots all over the place (but that's normal) Have all different types of bearded Iris, the dark purples are starting to phase out, but some of the others are poppin fresh, such as my yellow and soon to be pink (sorry, would have to check it's label for name). I have a pink and white blooming beautifully (again have to check the label) now. My Kousa dogwood is all budded up to my amazement for that usually blooms for July 4th weekend, not this year.

You made me go look really carefully and I found scapes on VT FLAT GOLD an extra early bloomer that is a plain flower but early bloomer. But not THIS early, ha-ha. I prunned my knockouts heavily in March so they are not ready to bloom. Usually I don't prune them much. But things are very strange this year. I have daffodils blooming in front of lilacs blooming. Dutch Iris and TB iris all started blooming already. Weird, weird, weird.
