Yellow tips on pine needles

Does anyone know what causes pine needles to get yellow tips? It's occurring on new needles. I've fertilized them with crumbled up tree spikes, so surely they are not deficient in nutrients. I can post a pic if that would help. Thanks for any reply

Beyond that, any weed killer used anywhere nearby? Including weed-and-feed stuff for the lawn?

conifers NEVER 'need' fertilizer.. unless a soil test indicates something is lacking in the soil... no need to waste money on it again ...

and shall we presume it is not a variety that is SUPPOSED TO DO THIS .... i have at least a dozen like that ...

are you new to the house/conifer???

any information regarding the severity of winter ...

was it a recent transplant ...

give us the pic.. and any further info beyond a yellow tip.. that might be important ..

Sunburn is possible on yellow foliage forms. The green ones may have something like a fungus problem, look for specks or other indicators. Internet has plenty on things like pine needle cast. Your region will have specific ones known to occur. Here I am seeing lots of browning of ponderosa pine in recent years, apparently something is going around.

I don't see any disease issues here. That leaves me with three concerns regarding it's down hill trend. Too much sun which I have already commented on and what I would do. First and foremost screening will give it a chance to stabilize before moving. If you move it in its weaken condition it will surely fail. Root girdling. If indeed that is the case the plant is already slowly shutting down. Nothing you can do will reverse this process. I see indications this could be the problem. You can observe to some degree if and when you transplant it. Usually those constricting roots are to big to remove when discovered. Removing then will put the plant into shock. Been there and done that. Too much water. I don't think this is the case with this plant. I do mention this because the characteristics your plant displays could be a result of this. Again for what's its worth. cat man Original wood removed never regenerates to fill in bare spots caused by disease or removal of limbs. New growth is and extension of old growth at the end of last years growth. In time new growth could cover damaged ares left bare. It depends on damage and the cultivar you are growing. The best case scenario for cover up would be with your pendulous or weeping conifers. Dave

Hi Fotis, Don't, however, start watering any Pinus strobus on a regular basis. They do not like copious water and do like being on the dry side. You plant is a graft and would have been grafted also too, to a Pinus strobus (seedling). What you do have is a grafted-cultivar, and not a seedling. Hope that clears some things up, fer ya. And yes, of course, what you see is only natural, needle-shed. One more tip: clean out the dead needles with your hands. Dwarf conifers (particularly pines) build up needles in the inner of the plant and if not maintained, these extra needles can choke/kill a plant. The same applies to needle-build-up under a plant. 3" of pine needles is great and is free mulch. 6" (you wouldn't even know it's there if I hadn't told you...) will choke a conifer, too. It is typical for pines to loose needles. Ocassional deep watering will also help when there is not rain. About 2-3 inches of mulch and ocassinal watering into the fall and the pine should be fine through the winter into the spring. WHat you are seeing is probably just the regular sheding of some of the needles.

Yes, I have carefully sprayed Round-up around the bottom of the trees where I have them mulched with pine straw, so you may be on to something there. Thanks for the heads-up.

I had to chuckle at your post. It seemed a little "snarky". :) forgive me if I'm wrong. Anyway, there must be plenty of people "wasting" money on evergreen fertilizer, since nurseries regularly sell it. Besides, I was informed (on this site) of a condition called "little leaf" that one of my loblolly pines had (Pinus taeda), and the solution was fertilization. Sure enough, it worked.
No, this variety is not supposed to get yellow needle tips. They are called Sonderegger pines and are crosses between Longleaf (palustris) and Loblolly. Here is what mine look like right now..

I realize my camera didn't focus very well on the next two pics, but hopefully it's enough info to help

Some additional info: We had a colder than average winter, with a few nights in the single digits. The pines have been in the ground for 2 years now. Overall, I've been slightly disappointed with the pines. I expected much more vigorous growth, and much longer needles than these pines have.
