Picea mariana seedling source

Anybody know of one?

I am thinking about custom grafts to get some spruce cultivars in a low spot in my yard that can get standing water. I haven't had too much luck looking on line and should just suck it up and call Gee's and ask about custom grafts, but wanted to see if any of you knew of sources first.

Hey Will,

Windy Ridge Nursery sells 1 - any amount of grafts for about 4 bucks a piece and does custom grafting (disregard that they say they are wholesale).

Have a good one.

No luck at Gees and the Windy Ridge site doesn't show any mariana available. Tanks Dax.

I live in TN near Nashville too, and I have three Picea mariana cultivars - Nana, Doumetii, and Blue Teardrop. The Doumetii is brand new, but the other two have been in the ground a while and are doing very well so far with no special attention. I'm also doing really well with these: Omorika - no problems at all. Orientalis - I have a lot of cultivars and they all do fabulously well. Abies - Grows perfectly here. There are giant ones (the species) all over town, and all the cultivars I have tried do great. Jezoensis - I have a new one, so we'll see. Pungens - A lot of people say they won't grow here, but like MIDTN, I haven't had any problem so far with them. I have 10 or 12 different cultivars, from full size to dwarf. I have never had a spider mite attack, which I guess is a problem some places. Some of mine have been in the ground for several years now and look good. This year I'm also trying Picea engelmanii. Love the look of it. I would say don't be afraid to experiment. That's what most of gardening is, IMHO.

A neat tree gomanson. Interestingly your department of forestry does not seem to have them for sale. http://www.forestfarm.com/products.php?params=plantNameGenus:Pseudotsuga I dig forest farm. Order from them every six months it seems lol. Do you need three or four trees or a few dozen? I would think if you are just looking for a bunch of regular non-cultivar specific trees there may be a cheaper source. Some cultivars of Fagus (beech) or Picea (Spruce) require more shade due to dainty pink or yellow foliage. Agreed, for the thickest foliage you need full sun. I have found trees to tolerate more shade tolerance especially when young. Makes them grow more narrow than one planted plum in the middle of your yard. At some point shade will be something the trees "tolerate" and then something that stresses them. By 7-8 Shade tolerance do you mean the tree is in the sun only two or three hours a day? What does your planting area look like?

If you want an extremely common tree bareroot, your best bet may be your local County Soil Conservation Office or a State Nursery from a state near you. They are cheap and likely grown in your zone. Avoids problems with trees that spend a long time in trucks or are shipped from a zone south of you where they may break dormancy before your ground is thawed.

Head up north, and ask a forest ranger for permission to collect seedlings on National Forest land.

Western Maine Nursery has P. mariana seedlings but the 'catch' is you are required to buy minimun purchase which is probably a 100X what you need!

Itasca Greenhouse lists them. They look to be sold out currently but available in late Aug 07.

I have ordered a number of trees from them before and they are plug grown. The majority have done well for me.

Customer service is good and shipping has been cheapest of anyone I have ordered from. Less than $10 for 50+ seedlings
No minimum order.

Thanks Keith, looks like a good source.

Resin, then I would have to be able to identify Picea mariana, and worse yet seedlings. I'd come home with a bunch of Norway spruce and 1000 mosquito bites. My dad is going to Quetico park in a week, maybe he can throw 20 in the boat for me. He'll far even worse in the ID part though.

'JUST' buy the seedlings from Itasca. Windy Ridge does any type of grafting going on the assumption that they will 'try to locate scionwood for any customer'.-)

I've spoken with them on the phone. Least you could do in any worse case scenario is to get the understocks for anybody you know that grafts.

Send them to me for example.

I want some. I think that the range of black spruce up to the arctic circle makes this a very intersting tree since it's something that most of the continent never gets to see in person. I will order in the fall and see if I can get P. mariana to survive here in Atlantarctica, GA.

Point of interest . . it is growing perfectly well (and regenerating) here on the edge of zone 9. But that is of course with cool oceanic summers, which makes a huge difference.

For Willis - here's what you want to look for. Can't help with the mosquito bites, but the worst of them should be over by the time the cones are ripe.

Does anyone have a source for POTTED black spruce? I refuse to buy bare root evergreens.
