I haven't seeded any monostands of sheep fescue, so I'm not sure what it looks like. It's pretty easy to tell the difference between wheatgrass and KBG (even KBG that is newly sprouting from the roots/rhizomes). The natives will be much lighter in color than the KBG. A word of warning on the spots that have been going brown during drought. Streambank wheatgrass deals well with drought, but it does so by going in and out of dormancy easily. So if the streambank wheatgrass is the dominant grass, you'll still get some browning. The sheep fescue and western wheatgrass deal with drought by developing extensive root systems, so they don't go dormant as quickly. I've got sections of heckstrip that get almost no water at all from the sprinklers, which means almost no water from mid May through August or September, since we're pretty rain free then. The sprinklers probably hit those spots before the mailbox went in, but the mailbox (community, so I can't just get rid of it) creates a dead spot. The streambank wheatgrass grows there, but goes dormant. Western wheatgrass stays green, but I haven't been planting enough of it so far (from now on, I'm skipping the streambank and going with western). Near the end of the summer, I planted some blue grama, hand watering until it sprouted. It's been doing pretty well. I've read that it's normally a bunch grass, but that it can spread slowly at higher altitudes (I think that's comparative, so we'd count). I was walking the dog earlier today and walked by a section of mostly dirt by a highway. It obviously gets no water other than the rain and snow. There was a lot of dry grass, and some green that looked like it might be western wheatgrass. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed the distinctive "eyebrow" seed heads of blue grama. I doubled back to make sure, and there were several tufts of blue grama, green without any water other than the rain we got the first week of June and the first week of September. I'm tempted to sow more grama throughout the lawn, but I want to wait to see how early it goes dormant, since it's a warm season grass. If it has a long enough season, I may start including more of it in my lawn.

As for answering your simple question - yes bullfrogs are native to your area, but you specifically stated that you BOUGHT the animal from a pet store. This fact ALONE supports my original statement - it is ILLEGAL to release pets into the wild. If you bought it, its a pet and its ILLEGAL to release it into your pond. I have a good number of friends and contacts in MI and your actions would fall under that category. Maybe I should give them a call for you? Bullfrogs have a huge range throughout the United States and Canada, and you have no idea where that animal you bought in the pet store came from - do you REALLY think a bullfrog from Florida will do well in Michigan (or vice versa)? Also, by it being in the pet store, you have no idea what other animals it was exposed to or what pathogens it might be carrying that it could pass on to native populations of bullfrogs (dendrobatidus chytridmiosis) or rana virus. Do you homework, have an open mind to listening to what others say even if it doesn't fit into your plans, and think about your actions before you take them. ~Mike Excellent! :)

Large bullfrogs are a tadpole for 2 years. If things ate them ther would be no frogs on earth. The way they have protection is their Tails. If I put 3 five gal buckets of bulfrog tadpoles in a take on my fish truck an a fish gets in there the fish will be dead in a few mins. This is because of the poison in the tadpoles tails getting into the water. So no fish will eat tadpoles. Now I have seen here Hybrid bluegills eat toad tadpoles. This is because a toad is a tadpole just a few weeks and does not have the 2 years tail protection like the big frogs need. I ahv raised fish 40 years now and hate having 50,000 frog tadpoles in apond with fish then drain it and have to SORT by hand 1-2-3-4-50,000 tadpoles from the fish. Bar graders do not work if the fish are the same size, you have be careful not to mix then in a small tank and kill fish. QFT - buyorsell is right on. Unless you know for certain what amphibian is hatching in your pond, I would let it hatch. And, I can assure you that the learning process is a ton of fun! I have learned that toads lay eggs in long strings (or ribbons) and frogs lay eggs in one big huge mass. Cuban Tree frogs lay a qagillion-majillion little bitty eggs in one big huge mass. I have also learned to better recognize the sounds of the different frogs/toads. I have a 'spawn mat' in the pond, which is really just two artificial bamboo thing-a-bobs from the pet store. After a spawn, if I'm pretty darn certain I've got Cuban Tree frogs, I pull the spawn mat out and let it sit on the asphalt for a few days. This year, we have two young frogs that certainly spawned in our pond last year. It is so very cool to watch them this year. I am still not certain what my giant tadpoles where, but I do not have any cane toads around here, thank heavens. I quit trying to grow hornwort and cabomba in the pond; now I just grow lots of lilies. Personally, I would not use hydrogen peroxide in a water garden. Try the 'spawn mat' approach. I've found the amphibians far prefer my artificial spawn mats than the water lilies. You could also try putting in some gambusia. They are local fish, you can probably find them from your county mosquito control person, or any local pond. They are usually called mosquito fish. However, be known that they multiply like crazy. And based on the visual evidence at our county office, they don't eat healthy lily pad leaves. I am learning to approach water lilies the way I plant dill & fennel.
