The 'Jacqueline Hillier' is a great tree to work with...You can sculpt this thing a 100 different ways. I have enclosed a photo of mine. In fact I have two. No Dutch Elm disease with this one.

About that lawnmower with the ratty Briggs & Stratton engine. It needs to run with the shroud on it...otherwise, it will burn up.

Great photos T, your unknown blue spruce looks very much like (Prostrate) 'Blue Mist', and yes your Picea glauca 'Echiniformis' is a mariana.

I have just a few questions, but they're about some of the non-conifers in your photos.

In photo #1, what is the large Yucca(back, center left)? Also, which cactus are those just to the right of the Yucca? One looks like a Cholla of some kind, while the one in front of it looks like an Opuntia of some kind.

In photo #4, which Agave is that and what is the small tree on the right and behind the 'Gimborn's Ideal'?

In photo #8, what is the large mound shaped plant between the Heuchera and the Achillea?

That's a great gardening climate. Even with your clay, you can do it all. Two of you are great gardeners. Tres Magnifique! I say too!

p.s. Nice photo Dave. It looked like a fern and it is fernish. You have some good-pruned material whether you did it or not. T- Your Arbor is super! I love naturual looking stuff like wood in homes too. Log cabins, all that stuff. My home is all knotty-pine flat board. It's tongue and grooved 'car siding' I was told it is called. Magnificent. Dave, yes we are surrounded by a huge natural rockery on wich we could hardly improve.Our actual garden is only about half an acre plus another acre or so where our greenhouses are.We hope to buy some more land...
I hauled all the rock myself from higher up in the mountains.About a ton per trip.

The lawnmower starting device flew to bits last summer so I decided to keep it running 'as is' until it gives up the ghost. B&S spare parts are hard to come by and replacement engines cost about as much as a complete new mower!!!

Hi Sluice. The crop with the pink flowers is sage .I don't know the exact name, but it's bi-annual and is used in the perfume industry. I'll try and get a close-up shot together tomorrow.

Kman The large Yucca is probably Y. rostrata ,but it is unusually large for that species.It also produces numerous suckers ,wich is also uncommon.It could also be Y. elata or perhaps a hybrid. It came up as a stray seedling in a Yucca schottii sowing about twenty years ago. The cholla is probably Cylindropuntia spinosior or imbricata.Many forms exist wich makes identification difficult.We got this one back in Britain some thirty years ago and it has always been outdoors!!! In front of it is Opuntia scheeri wich is also bone-hardy.The agave is A. parryi v. cousei.
The (still) small tree with the silvery leaves is Elaeagnus angustifolia v. caspica (syn. 'Quicksilver' or Russian Olive).I'm trying to shape it into a small tree, but in reality it is more like a shrub.The mound-shaped plant is Erysimum 'Bowles Mauve' or B.M Wallflower. I just clipped away the hundreds of spent flowering stalks to encourage it to perform again.I will also take cuttings soon as it lasts only two to three years.

Hi Dax. The arbor is made from chestnut timber wich has good natural rot-resistant qualities.I am training a weeping Himalayan cedar over it to provide some shade for that bench and the rockery.This may not have been a good choice as it seems to be extremely vigorous.

Thank you for answering all my ID questions. I'd say your Yucca is Y. rostrata. I don't see the fine leaf filaments Y. elata is known for. Yes, the Cholla Cactus are difficult to tell apart. A couple are native here in Kansas, but Opuntia sps. are more common. Although they don't often get to be the size of your Opuntia scheeri. I never would of guessed that was a Wallflower (Erysimum sps.)! Your clump is quite large and easily twice as big as any I've seen in my area. I've even seen the same exact one growing here and it's usually about 1/3 the size of yours. I guess you're close enough to the Mediterranean that you have hot dry summers and mild wet winters?

Is that white blooming shrub a Lavatera? I wish I could grow them here.... always something you can't have ya know. Same with Wallflowers. One of my very, very, very favorites. I used to live in Portland, Oregon and those were some of my favorites.

And your 'Gimborn's Ideal' is a GEM!

Hi Dax. The white-flowering shrub next to that garden bench is a rose bush . A cv called 'Kathleen'.Back in march I used a chainsaw to cut away half of the understock wich has the bad habit of throwing up suckers about 10 ft long.That seems to have had a calming effect upon it!
